Fantasy Baseball: Week 8 Waiver Wire

Pirates Josh Bell

It’s time to hit the Week 8 Waiver Wire in hopes of improving your fantasy baseball team. With Damian Dabrowski, the typical author of this column headed to Nashville for a bachelor party (RIP his liver) I have stepped in to help. First base has a ton of potential including Josh Bell and Justin Bour, especially with Freddie Freeman out for at least eight weeks. Travis Shaw, Yonder Alonso, and Kendrys Morales are more highly owned but make great options as well. For the purpose of this column I looked at players owned in 40% or less of Yahoo leagues.

Josh Bell | 1B/OF | Pittsburgh Pirates
31% Owned on Yahoo!

The Pittsburgh Pirates Josh Bell has been tearing the cover off of the ball over the past couple weeks forcing the team to find playing time for him. He is hitting .273 with 9 runs, 10 RBI, and 5 homers over the last two weeks. He has nine homers on the season with 867 OPS per Rotoworld’s Drew Silva. Add Bell if you need OF or 1B help in the coming weeks, especially Freeman owners.

Tim Beckham | 1B/2B/SS | Tampa Bay Rays
35% Owned on Yahoo!

Tim Beckham is hitting .296 over the last two weeks hitting 3 homers, with 12 RBI and 6 runs. Beckham is an extremely useful player that can fill shortstop or middle infield on most sites. Yahoo adds second base and outfield making him more valuable.

Justin Bour | 1B | Miami Marlins
13% Owned on Yahoo!

Over the last two weeks Justin Bour is hitting .342 over the four homers, nine RBI and six runs scored. Three of his homers have came over the last six games. Bour is a streaky hitter that is clearly in a hot streak. Add him now and soak up the production. If he starts to fall off you can drop him for another name. Bour is another option for Freddie Freeman owners.

Leury Garcia | OF | Chicago White Sox
7% Owned on Yahoo!

Digging a little deeper, Leury Garcia is a widely available option that can provide a little pop and a little speed. He has two home runs and one steal over the last 14 days. Garcia also has 10 runs scored and 7 RBI over that time frame.

Royals Nate Karns

Nate Karns | P | Kansas City Chiefs
35% Owned on Yahoo!

Nathan Karns aka the strikeout machine has been great as of late. He has 29 Ks over his last three starts. Karns does have limitations, rarely going beyond the fifth or sixth inning. He is a great complement to good ratio middle relievers or starters who with limited strikeout upside.

Zack Wheeler | P | New York Mets
27% Owned on Yahoo!

The Mets Zack Wheeler seems to be hitting his stride this season. He has allowed one earned in four of his last five outings. Wheeler has 27 strikeout over his last five outings. The walks are a little concerning with two, four walk outings but a 2/1 ratio is something I can live with. He faces the Angels and Padres in his next two outings and should pitch well in both games.

Jimmy Nelson | P | Milwaukee Brewers
10% Owned on Yahoo!

Jimmy Nelson has been impressive since May and looks to be regaining old form. He has allowed only two earned this month with an 18 Ks and only 5 BBs. While I would be adding him this week, I would avoid using him at Chicago especially in any starts or innings cap leagues. There will be plenty of good chances to use him in the coming weeks and adding him now is a good way to get ahead of the curve.
