PGA DFS Memorial Tournament Preview

After the long holiday weekend hangover, PGA DFS continues to provide my weekly addiction of convincing myself that I have the perfect lineup combination to win the top prize on my way to world domination. That’s right! It’s that time of year where we attempt to guess who will be rolling in a higher percentage of 15-20 foot birdie putts.

Is it mostly a ridiculous exercise in futility? Pretty much. But, that certainly won’t be stopping me. And, whether my suggestions work out or flame out, it will always be an honor going into every PGA DFS battle with you each week. That, and I have nothing better to do.

First and foremost, in PGA DFS it’s all about getting your guys to the weekend. The factors I consider are event history, course layout versus player strengths, recent form, and prime bounce back candidates who are playing well, but happened to miss the cut the prior week. One factor does not necessarily outweigh another. And, like any good speculative decision-making process, instinct always plays a role.

Event Information

Course: Muirfield Village Golf Club, Par 72, 7,543 yards, Dublin, OH

The tour heads to the Midwest for one of golf’s most prestigious nonmajor events. Of course, area native and living legend Jack Nicklaus’s affiliation is the reason that it’s held in such high esteem. He is the club founder and designer of this course that has played host for this event every year since 1976. Kind of like Bay Hill in Orlando being Arnie’s course, Muirfield Village (MV) Golf Club belongs to Jack. Because of that, it annually attracts fields with a majority of the top players in the world.

The course layout features some of the widest fairways on tour. But, don’t let that trick you into thinking it can’t test the game’s best players. The generous fairways are littered with water hazards and bunkers all over the rough areas. Add to that all the green side bunkers and glass like putting surfaces provided by the bentgrass greens, Muirfield will absolutely penalize sloppy ball striking. Especially if the rough areas are grown out like last year when just nine total players finished with a score under par.

That said, I think the course will play closer to it’s average year conditions. Expect a cut line around even par and a winning score of 12-15 shots under par.

Key Metrics and Odds

Week-to-week, I put an emphasis on ball striking (BS), and strokes gained: approach (SGA) the green. They are the best golf statistics that reflect a player’s ability to consistently put themselves in position to have favorable scoring chances, regardless of course setup. I would even argue that high rankings in other stats like putting, birdies, and Par-4 scoring average are directly correlated and a byproduct of strong ball striking and/or a precise approach performance. I’ve added strokes gained: putting (SGP) and applied a weighted average (WA) calculation with the following percentages:

• BS–50%
• SGA–40%
• SGP–10%

The WA metric is meant to serve as a high level illustration on how each player’s all-around form has been up to this point in the season, based on my opinion of how each stat contributes to golf performance results. To help sift through the field regarding just these stats, I put the table below together every week using all data from the official PGA Tour website. It is listed in order of each players’ WA metric ranking. Sort as you wish.

• You may recall that last season Muirfield played host to events in back-to-back weeks as part of the COVID adjusted schedule. Jason Dufner added to his solid track record by making the weekend in both. That makes him 7/10 overall in cuts made, with two top-10s including his 2017 win.
• Another tour veteran, Kevin Streelman, also made both 2020 cuts. He’ll be going for eight straight MV weekends made this week. Overall, he has four top-10 finishes here.
• Ya know who else spent two consecutive weekends in Ohio last year? Gary Woodland did. That makes him 9/11 in MV cuts made, with five top-25s, and three top-10 finishes.
• Mr. Anthony Finau has just one missed weekend in six career MV appearances. His five finishes includes four inside the top-15.
• Coming up from the Korn Ferry Tour this week is the 2015 winner, David Lingmerth. The Swede missed his first cut last season in eight career Memorial appearances.

Contest Approach

The course setup here requires sharp approach games for success. Therefore, I would lean most on approach stats when making any PGA DFS decisions this week. Wait. So if a strong approach game is needed here, you should rely on approach stats? Now, that is the type of sizzling analysis you can’t find anywhere else in the industry! You’re welcome!!! Anyway….

In the form alert department, Kyle Stanley should be someone to consider this week from the cheap seats. He’s coming off his best performance of 2021 with a T-8 at last week’s Charles Schwab Challenge. Also, he led the entire field in strokes-gained approach, and tee-to-green. Before missing his last two cuts at the Memorial, three of his previous four appearances at MV were T-6 of higher.

Also turning the corner on his game, Gary Woodland ranked in the top-10 in strokes-gained off-the-tee, and greens in regulation percentage last week. When he has it going, he’s one of the best ball strikers on tour. Combine that with his MV history–I like him as a mid-range target this week.

From the bounce back category, Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Reed, and Sungjae Im all missed the cut last week. Of the three, Scheffler is the only one that has missed consecutive cuts this season. Im’s average finishing position after a missed weekend is 16th place this season. Reed’s three finishes after a missed cut this year have been win, T-22, and a tie for sixth place. I like them all this week in PGA DFS and on the open betting market. Reed will contend just to annoy everyone anyway.

Each week, I identify four players that I want to build around in my DK lineups. These selections are players that I believe have top-25 floors with top 10 upside, and a reasonable case to win. They will be used in all my lineups. This week’s selections:
