PGA DFS Arnold Palmer Invitational Preview

Now that football is over, PGA DFS is here to provide my weekly addiction of convincing myself that I have the perfect lineup combination to win the top prize on my way to world domination. That’s right! It’s that time of year where we switch from trying to predict who scores touchdowns, to guessing who will be rolling in a higher percentage of 15-20 foot birdie putts.

Is it mostly a ridiculous exercise in futility? Pretty much. But, that certainly won’t be stopping me. And, whether my suggestions work out or flame out, it will always be an honor going into every PGA DFS battle with you each week. That, and I have nothing better to do.

First and foremost, in PGA DFS it’s all about getting your guys to the weekend. The factors I consider are event history, course layout versus player strengths, recent form, and prime bounce back candidates who are playing well, but happened to miss the cut the prior week. One factor does not necessarily outweigh another. And, like any good speculative decision-making process, instinct always play a role.

Event Information

Course: Bay Hill Club and Lodge, par 72, 7,381 yards, Orlando Gardens FL

As temperatures rise with spring approaching, the PGA Tour schedule heats up accordingly. With the schedule shuffle two seasons ago, PGA officials made the great shift of moving up THE PLAYERS Championship to March. Now each year, we essentially get to see five major championships every four weeks. And, the already prestigious Arnold Palmer Invitational (API) now serves as the annual precursor to one of golf’s “kind of” major championships.

The API though is no slouch itself. Simply because of the name attached to it, this event is always packed with the world’s top players. Having been played at Bay Hill every year since 1979, this tournament is entrenched in golf tradition and significance amongst fans, media, and players alike.

In terms of the course, Bay Hill was renovated after 2009’s event. The changes resulted in a par 70 becoming a par 72. It now features four par 5s where scoring is imperative in order to stay for the weekend and contend. This especially holds true for the par 5 on hole 16 because the massive par 3 and par 4 that follow usually play as the toughest holes on the course.

The mighty wind that wreaked havoc in Orlando last year illustrated the impact conditions can have on scoring here. It got so bad over the weekend that the vast majority of the field shot over par. That said, under moderate-normal playing conditions, expect a cut line around even par, and a winning score of 12-15 under par.

Key Metrics and Odds

Week-to-week, I put an emphasis on ball striking (BS), and strokes gained: approach (SGA) the green. They are the best golf statistics that reflect a player’s ability to consistently put themselves in position to have favorable scoring chances, regardless of course setup. I would even argue that high rankings in other stats like putting, birdies, and Par-4 scoring average are directly correlated and a byproduct of strong ball striking and/or a precise approach performance. I’ve added strokes gained: putting (SGP) and applied a weighted average (WA) calculation with the following percentages:

• BS–50%
• SGA–40%
• SGP–10%

The WA metric is meant to serve as a high level illustration on how each player’s all-around form has been up to this point in the season, based on my opinion of how each stat contributes to golf performance results. To help sift through the field regarding just these stats, I put the table below together every week using all data from the official PGA Tour website. It is listed in order of each players’ WA metric ranking. Sort as you wish.

• Up until last season’s MC, Charles Howell III was a prefect 10/10 in cuts made, including five finishes inside the top-25.
• Ian Poulter finished T-32 here last season, extending his perfect run of cuts made to 10 straight in Orlando.
• Marc Leishman, Jason Day, and Francesco Molinari are all former API winners, and own outstanding track records in this event. Besides Day’s WD last year, there is only two MCs (both Leishman) total between the trio.

• Henrik Stenson is looking to bounce back from last season’s missed weekend at Bay Hill. Overall, he is 9/11 in cuts made including seven top-25s, and five top-10s here.
• Grizzled tour veteran, Zach Johnson, is looking to make his 11th straight weekend at the API, and 10 straight overall this season.
• A couple of other veterans attempting to add to their stellar API track records are Keegan Bradley and Ryan Moore. Bradley is going for nine cuts made in a row here, and Moore is looking to make his seventh straight weekend, and go 10/11 overall in cuts made in Orlando.

Contest Approach

After last week, we’re back to the traditional 36 hole cut sweat. Last season, I consistently made the case to avoid five figure players in PGA DFS traditional events with loaded fields like this by using a grubhub analogy. While I generally still agree with that rule, there are always exceptions.

One exception would be if I’m convinced the winner will come from that five figure group. We all know how important rostering the winner is in PGA DFS because of positional scoring. And, this week that winner is Rory McIlroy.

In five appearances here, he’s never missed a cut and went T-4, win, T-6 in his last three appearances. Also, he’s due. It may not be this week necessarily, but the best players in the world are typically good for a handful of wins every season, on average. Rory has been close in 2021, but has yet to hoist a trophy. Even if this isn’t the week, his phenomenal track record here and fantasy floor are high enough for me to break my general rule.

Deep Shots

Anytime you spend in the Rory range, it’s likely you’ll have to consider some deep shots to balance your budget. John Huh is someone who has caught my eye this season. He’s playing on a medical exemption which means he has a limited number of events he can play in to secure his PGA Tour card into next season. So far, the extra motivation is working for the New York city native as he’s gone 6/7 in weekends made with four top-25s this season.

Because of their rock solid ball striking stats, Matthew NeSmith and Doug Ghim are always players that I tend to fall back on in this range. NeSmith has always been an elite tee-to-green player going back to his Korn Ferry Tour days. Now in his second full season on the PGA Tour, it’s starting to pay off as he already has more top-25s, and top-10s in 12 starts than he did in 23 starts last year.

In terms of sheer talent, Doc Redman and my love child Kristoffer Ventura are also candidates that garner my attention. Both are inconsistent and have been scuffling as of late so they come at a high risk. However, that also makes them premium separation candidates. So, if you catch them on a top-25 week, they’ll payoff huge in any PGA DFS contest. If you’re feeling more risk adverse, there are several great course history bargains already mentioned. They also serve as sturdy building blocks for your lineups.

Core Four

Each week, I identify four players that I want to build around in my DK lineups. These selections are players that I believe have top-25 floors with top 10 upside, and a reasonable case to win. They will be used in all my lineups. This week’s selections:
