PGA DFS Arnold Palmer Invitational Preview

If you need a distraction from COVID-19 fear mongering, let PGA DFS be your weekly vaccine to cure sports boredom until NCAA tournament betting begins. That’s right! It’s that time of year where we transition from trying to predict who scores touchdowns, to guessing who will be rolling in a higher percentage of 15-20 foot birdie putts.

Is it mostly a ridiculous exercise in futility? Pretty much. But, that certainly won’t be stopping me. And, whether my suggestions work out or flame out, it will always be an honor going into every PGA DFS battle with you each week. That, and I have nothing better to do.

First and foremost, in PGA DFS it’s all about getting your guys to the weekend. Generally, I will fill out my roster with guys in the $7,100-$9,000 range. The factors I consider are event history, course layout versus player strengths, recent form, and prime bounce back candidates who are playing well, but happened to miss the cut the prior week.

One factor does not necessarily outweigh another. And, like any good speculative decision-making process, instinct always play a role.

Event Information

Course: Bay Hill Club and Lodge, par-72, 7,381 yards, Orlando Gardens, Florida

The Arnold Palmer Invitational (API) is one of the PGA Tour’s signature events that is not a major championship. With last season’s schedule shift, it now plays as a perfect annual precursor for next week’s PLAYERS Championship.

The event has been played at Bay Hill every year since 1979. And, with one of golf’s iconic names attached to it, there is always a field that includes a vast majority of the game’s best players looking to shoulder that umbrella embroidered, fire engine red cardigan, on the 18th green Sunday afternoon.

Unfortunately, that will no longer include one Eldrick Woods, who has won the event an asinine eight times in his career. He will be missing out on a ball striker’s dream compared to last week’s Honda Classic. Unlike the defensive PGA National course, Bay Hill is set up for scoring.

After 2009, course renovations altered the layout to play at a par 72. Since then, the course features four Par 5s that players must score on in order to keep pace. This includes hole 16 which begins one of the most iconic three-hole finishing stretches in golf.

The massive par 3 and 4 that come after on 17 and 18 typically play as the toughest holes on the course so scoring on 16 will be a significant factor Sunday, if scores are close. Depending on conditions, you can expect a final winning score of 12-15 under par.

Key Metrics and Odds

Week to week, I put an emphasis on ball striking (BS), and strokes gained: approach (SGA) the green. They are the best golf statistics that reflect a player’s ability to consistently put themselves in position to have favorable scoring chances, regardless of course setup. I would even argue that high rankings in other stats like putting, birdies, and Par-4 scoring average are directly correlated and a byproduct of strong ball striking and a precise approach performance.

To help sift through the field regarding just these stats, I put the table below together every week using all data from the official PGA Tour website. It is listed in order of each players’ composite ranking, an average of each players’ ranking in these two stats. Sort as you wish.

• Charles Howell III may not have a top-10 at Bay Hill, but he’s a perfect 10/10 in cuts made since the last renovation including five finishes inside the top-25. Tour Englishman villain Ian Poulter has also never missed a weekend in his nine career API appearances. Six of those were finishes inside the top-25.
• Former API winners Marc Leishman, Jason Day, and Francesco Molinari all own outstanding track records in this event. Since 2015, neither one has the dreaded MC on their record and all finishes have been T-26 or higher. Hell, between the threesome, Leishman is the only guy to miss any weekends (two total) here since the last course changes. Due to his recent slump, Molinari is the forgotten man of the trio as indicative of his low DK price. Maybe the comfortable venue will restore some confidence and get his season headed in the right direction…
• Captain 3-Wood Henrik Stenson is making his 2020 PGA Tour debut at a familiar place full of wonderful memories. Overall, he’s gone 9/10 in cuts made since the renovation. In his last eight appearances, he stayed for the weekend seven times, with six finishing T-17 or better, including five top-10s.

CH Bargains

• After missing the cut in 2010, Zach Johnson has kept hotel reservations through the weekend nine years in a row, with two top-10s. Similarly, Keegan Bradley and Ryan Moore have just one MC here since 2009, going 7/8 and 8/9 respectively.
• For some ungodly reason, Matt Every went back-to-back here for his only two PGA Tour wins in 2014-2015.
• Formerly ranked in the top-35 in the world, Kevin Chappell is playing again this season after sitting out a majority of 2019 with back issues. Before that, he’d made three straight weekends at Bay Hill, with two finishes inside the top-10.

Contest Approach

Grubhub is the new proverbial loaded gun in my home. With a few clicks of a mouse, $60 dollars worth of P.F. Chang’s is 43 minutes away from my door step. I haven’t decided if this is an indication of progress, or damnation. I have a mental line of grubhubing fast food that I am not willing to cross. As long as I avoid that, I tell myself it’s okay. For now…

What does this have to do with the API DK contest, you ask? Similar to my mouse clicks when perusing any Asian cuisine menu, this loaded API field allows you to keep adding high quality items to your checkout bag, without destroying your budget.

You have six slots to fill. Not two or three. And, it’s not imperative to roster the winner in order to cash, and cash big. Most of my best PGA DFS weeks have come without rostering any of the five figure guys and/or the winner. Also, the vegas odds suggest that there are 10-15 players with a fairly equal chance of winning.

The point is–much like the Genesis Invitational–you are able to order up sesame chicken, beef lo mein, house fried rice, pork dumplings and crab rangoon altogether, if, you can avoid the temptation of gorging on Rory. Besides, it should be mandatory anyway that pork dumplings and rangoons are part of any Chinese food order.

Core Five

I’m doing it! In an effort to further embarrass myself with these picks I’m increasing my core to five. These selections are players that I believe have top-25 floors with top 10 upside, and a reasonable case to win. They will be used in all my lineups.
