PGA DFS Honda Classic Preview

Before we all contract the coronavirus, PGA DFS will have to be the weekly vaccine to cure sports boredom until NCAA tournament betting begins. That’s right! It’s that time of year where we transition from trying to predict who scores touchdowns, to guessing who will be rolling in a higher percentage of 15-20 foot birdie putts.

Is it mostly a ridiculous exercise in futility? Pretty much. But, that certainly won’t be stopping me. And, whether my suggestions work out or flame out, it will always be an honor going into every PGA DFS battle with you each week. That, and I have nothing better to do.

First and foremost, in PGA DFS it’s all about getting your guys to the weekend. Generally, I will fill out my roster with guys in the $7,100-$9,000 range. The factors I consider are event history, course layout versus player strengths, recent form, and prime bounce back candidates who are playing well, but happened to miss the cut the prior week.

One factor does not necessarily outweigh another. And, like any good speculative decision-making process, instinct always play a role.

Event Information

Course: PGA National’s Champions course, par-70, 7,125 yards, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida

From the West Coast Swing to Mexico City, the PGA Tour now enters the Florida Fling portion of it’s schedule. Over the next four tournaments, the tour will jump around the sunshine state that includes two marque events–the Arnold Palmer Invitational and THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass.

The Honda Classic (HC) may not get the draw of those events, but it still measures up as one of the most difficult non-major tournaments on the schedule. I came across this article a few years ago in preparation to lose many DFS contests. The information on PGA National (PGAN) remains relevant, and it does a great job of laying out how difficult it plays relative to other courses on tour.

You’ll notice many players here opting to leave the driver at home on several par-4s because the risk/reward for bombing it out there over accuracy just isn’t worth it. In addition to it’s non-forgiving layout, the Florida winds off the ocean can be a significant factor. If they’re howling, most of the field would be happy to shoot even par. Considering all this, it is a week where I take a stronger look at course history for my guesses–ERRRRRRRRRRRRR–selections.

There is plenty of material to review in that department as this course has been home to the Honda Classic without any major renovations since 2006. And, like many other courses on tour, PGAN has their own gimmicky signature stretch of golf holes so be prepared to hear “Bear Trap” 17,467 times this week! Insert drinking game joke here.

Key Metrics

Week to week, I put an emphasis on ball striking, and strokes gained: approach the green. They are the best golf statistics that reflect a player’s ability to consistently put themselves in position to have favorable scoring chances, regardless of course setup. I would even argue that high rankings in other stats like putting, birdies, and Par-4 scoring average are directly correlated and a byproduct of strong ball striking and a precise approach performance.

To help sift through the field regarding just these stats, I put the table below together every week using all data from the official PGA Tour website. It is listed in order of each players’ composite ranking, an average of each players’ ranking in these two stats. Sort as you wish.

• Justin Rose has not played this event since 2015. That tells me his entry into this field is very deliberate. When a player of his caliber is in a shallow field like this at a pretty reasonable price, it’d behoove us all to take note. In six prior appearances here, Rose made four weekends that included three finishes T-5 or higher.
• Gary Woodland and Jason Dufner are staple entrants in this event each season. Neither has missed a cut here. Same goes for Lee Westwood. Although, this will mark his first appearance since 2015 and seventh overall.
• Almost joining that trio of Bear Trap perfection is Brendan Steele. Prior to last year’s Friday exit, he has made the cut in all seven of his prior appearances. His three-year results from 15-17′ were T-11, and two straight T-14s.
• After going 1/4 in weekend stays over his first four appearances, Billy Horschel has made it 3/4 with two top-10s in the last four starts at PGAN. Along with him, Lucas Glover has had considerable success here as of late with three consecutive top-25s, including last season’s tie of his HC career best T-4 finish.

Contest Approach

The last two days of tinkering has me favoring a top-down approach more often than not. Unlike the Genesis Invitational, the HC represents a shallow field and much less of the games top players. That said, it’s a logical tournament to expect high floors from the top of the price range while providing a nice opportunity for considerable upside on the low end. Think Keith Mitchell last year.

Speaking of that low end, DK decreased the contest minimum to 6k this season. This reduction allows you to grab 2-3 of the top-10 priced players and fill out the rest of the slots with some–albeit long shots–guys that still have a solid case for the weekend and beyond.

So, who then? Who are these dirt cheap options that are going to make our PGA DFS dreams come true? How about rookies like Doug Ghim and Robby Shelton.

In 2017’s US Amateur Championship, Ghim lost a classic to one of my other favorite DFS plays this year, Doc Redman. He hasn’t had the success yet of some of his other younger counterparts in PGA events, but he remains equal in talent. All he needs is the confidence that comes with increased experience to get the results that Redman has attained thus far. Maybe last week’s T-20 in Puerto Rico is the start of an upswing?…

Mr. Shelton has had moderate success early in his first full PGA Tour season going 7/13 in cuts with two top-10s. He is also known for solid ball striking, ranking around the top-40 all season.

Other Notables

Along with these two, guys such as Harry Higgs, Dufner, Doc, Matthew NeSmith, Steele, Glover, and D.J. Trahan are my favorite options for filling the dance card on the lower end this week, for one reason or another.

Beyond them, whether it is stats, recent form or event history, there are plenty of guys that a strong case can be made for in a field like this. And, if you aren’t too greedy on the high side, all of them may be available at your PGA DFS disposal.

For example, a trio of Woodland/Rose/Oosthuizen at the top will leave plenty of cap flexibility to create, what is sure to be, some electric lineups. That reminds me…

Core Three

These selections are players that I believe have top-25 floors with top 10 upside, and a reasonable case to win. They will be used in all my lineups. To this point in the season they have straddled the line between average and hot garbage so buyer beware. This week’s selections:

3. Louis Oosthuizen
