Fantasy Football: TE Injury Replacements

Patriots Rob Gronkowski

Week 2 was rough on elite fantasy TEs. The Carolina Panthers Greg Olsen broke his foot and should miss significant time, the Redskins Jordan Reed left with a chest injury and the Patriots Rob Gronkowski left his game against the Saints with a groin injury. He told ESPN’s Mike Reiss “….im good” after declining to talk. The status of Gronkowski is up in the air for Week 3. Oh, and Jimmy Graham was banged up in his game against the 49ers.

Having a “just in case” plan wouldn’t be a horrible idea. You may not need to add one of these players now, but having a waiver wire target to grab if your TE ends up on the injury report is always good.

These options can help you if you need TE help for Week 3 and/or beyond.

Hunter Henry | San Diego Chargers
72% Owned on Yahoo!

The Chargers Hunter Henry rebounded in a big way on Sunday bringing in all 7 of his targets for 80 yards. He laid a massive egg in Week 1 causing many owners to panic and drop him. He can be found on the waiver wire in over 40% of ESPN fantasy football leagues. Let other owners mistakes be your gain. Henry should be a reliable season-long option.

Jason Witten | Dallas Cowboys
65% Owned on Yahoo!

The ole reliable Jason Witten has been a beast thus far. He has 22 targets through 2 games. He backed up a 7 catch, 59 yard and TD performance with 97 yards and a TD on 10 catches. QB Dak Prescott clearly leans on the TE when things are going well or going poorly. If you are looking for reliability and safety, Witten is the answer.

Saints Coby Fleener

Another week, another Coby Fleener touchdown. With Willie Snead out for the first three weeks of the season, Fleener has had an opportunity to step up. He is taking advantage of extra room in the middle of the field. If he is available, I’m adding him for Week 3. If he keeps producing it will be hard for QB Drew Brees to avoid him.

Ben Watson | Baltimore Ravens
1% Owned on Yahoo!

After a very quiet Week 1, the Ben Watson coming out party started in Week 2. He caught all 8 of his targets for 91 yards against the Browns on Sunday. Joe Flacco loves to throw to his TEs and Watson should continue to get looks in the coming weeks. The Ravens have a nice schedule in the coming weeks including the Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders and Chicago Bears. Watson is available everywhere and can help you in Week 3.

Dwayne Allen | New England Patriots
8% Owned on Yahoo!

If Rob Gronkowski does miss time, Dwayne Allen will get the start. He is a talented pass catcher that had big games with the Indianapolis Colts in previous seasons. New England needs pass catchers with Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola already out. Rex Burkhead and Phillip Dorsett also left Sunday’s game as well and could miss some time.
