Notes:

  • Dallas Keuchel facing both Detroit and Baltimore at home has a little concern for me because both teams can do a lot of damage with the bat but he is at the level where you have to trust him.
  • Gerrit Cole has been really good this year but pitching in Atlanta’s new hitter friendly ballpark does give me some concern, even if there is no Freddie Freeman. The start against the Mets could either be amazing or a disaster depending on which Mets team turns up. I think he has earned the trust at this point where you have to start him though.
  • I debated for a long time about where to rank Michael Pineda because he has two of the best starts a pitcher could have right now. If he was on the road at those two teams then he would have been a serious consideration to go above Keuchel and Cole.
  • I think Rick Porcello is better than his numbers indicate and both Texas and Seattle can blow hot and cold.
  • Julio Teheran scars the crap out of me right now but these are two matchups I think he should be able to do good things in.
  • Jerad Eickhoff has two starts I am concerned about but he is still a must start in 12 team leagues for me.
  • Ervin Santana’s shellacking at the hands of Colorado has me a little worried about him especially for the start in Baltimore but he has pitched so well I think he has earned the right to be a must start this week in 12 team leagues.
  • Matt Harvey is the start of 9 interesting pitchers who all have either nice matchups or are good pitchers with tough matchups. Harvey gets to face the Padres who have been gold for starting pitchers against and then in Pittsburgh could be a really nice outing as well. If he’s been dropped I would go and get him for this week.
  • Matt Shoemaker is generally someone I don’t want ever but this week with starts in Tampa and Miami are enough to convince me that in 12 team leagues I am starting him.
  • Jake Odorizzi is where it becomes borderline about whether I start these guys over one start pitchers this week. Both himself and Alex Cobb have a solid pair of starts but both scare me at the same time.
  • C. Ramirez is a slightly lesser option than his teammate Shoemaker but those starts have the potential to be real promising.
  • Mike Foltynewicz gets to face two teams who aren’t hitting consistently. I am always a little concerned when he pitches at home but Pittsburgh are unlikely to destroy him and pitching in San Francisco is always a bonus when picking 12 team guys. The start at home is enough for me to have him below the Rays and Angels guys.
  • Had Jordan Montgomery not go a little bit knocked around by the Royals on the road last night he would have been higher but that start just tempered my expectations a little bit. In a 12 team league if he’s available and I desperately need someone I think I would gamble here but there should be plenty of the guys above available so you may not need to.
  • Lance Lynn and Jason Vargas have been good this year but they have the worst matchups of these 9 guys and therefore if I can spare them I will probably bench them in 12 teamers for this week. These are perhaps the first two guys on the list who I wouldn’t consider in 12 teamers.
  • In 14+ teamers Andrew Cashner, Jacob Turner, Matt Garza and German Marquez are all gamble plays.
  • It would have to be a 16+ team league for me to consider anyone from Josh Tomlin down because you have the combination of bad pitchers with at least one tough start and that can pretty quickly lose you a week.
