Modern Times Black House Oatmeal Stout
-
Updated: February 1, 2017

Modern Times is a fairly new brewery, founded in 2013 by a former brewer from Stone. They are located in San Diego, and have recently started distribution in Arizona. Not only do they brew great beer, but they also roast coffee at the brewery and have a full coffee bar. The Modern Times Black House Oatmeal Stout is one of 5 core beers in Modern Times’ lineup. This beer is brewed with a blend of two in house roasted coffees, 25% Sumatran and 75% Ethiopian.
Style: Oatmeal Stout IBU: 40 ABV: 5.8%

Appearance: Like all of Modern Times’ core beers this Stout comes in 16oz cans (on a side note, canning is the current craze in the craft beer world). Very dark brown almost black at first glance, but when holding up to light you can see more of a dark brown amber color. Just a slight tan color head on this pour.
Aroma: There is an obviously heavy coffee aroma, with a slight burnt smell. Also picking up some chocolate and malt.
Palate: Very light almost a watery feel for a stout. Fairly heavy carbonation, which helps with the almost thin feeling.
Taste: Burnt dark chocolate espresso is dominant. After taste is all roasted coffee, with some malty flavor mixed in.
Overall this is a great stout. I don’t drink coffee at all, but I really enjoyed this beer. The abundance of dark chocolate flavors make this a very complex and rich beer. I’d like to try this beer on nitro to see if it gives it more body and fuller feeling.
