MLB DFS: Targets for 5/12

It’s a smaller slate for your MLB DFS Targets today, but it should be an interesting one!  Also included at the end of the article are FanDuel and DraftKings results from 5/10’s targets.

Adam Wainwright (STL @LAA)

Moneyline: -140

Over/Under: 8 1/2

FanDuel: $8,300/DraftKings: $7,200

It’s Clayton Kershaw day but I’m starting this off with Wainwright to switch things up.  Wainwright had a terrible start to the season but there has been improvement since then.  He had his longest outing of the season and no walks in his last start, which are good signs.  We know that Wainwright is a competitor and although he may not be what he once was, the matchup against the Angels shouldn’t be overlooked.

Clayton Kershaw (LAD vs. NYM)

Moneyline: -200

Over/Under: 6

FanDuel: $12,500/DraftKings: $13,300

He’s expensive as usual, but against a Mets team that has difficulty scoring runs at times, Kershaw has a chance at having a dominant outing.  The run total is only six for this game and on two pitcher sites, you could consider pairing Kershaw with opposing pitcher, Bartolo Colon.

Other pitchers to consider: Jimmy Nelson (MIL vs. SD), Bartolo Colon (NYM @ LAD), and Dallas Keuchel (HOU @ BOS).

Brian McCann (NYY vs. KC)

FanDuel: $3,100/DraftKings: $3,500

McCann is a better power hitter at home thanks to the short porch in right field at Yankee Stadium.  Any time McCann has the platoon at home, he’s worth a look.  The Yankees will be facing Ian Kennedy, who has pitched better than expected so some regression is to be expected.

Matt Wieters (BAL vs. DET)

FanDuel: $2,300/DraftKings: $3,500

Baltimore will be facing Mike Pelfrey, so an Orioles stack will be a popular one tonight.  Wieters has been very hit or miss, but you would be rostering him for the upside and he makes for a good punt play on FanDuel.

Other catchers to consider: Jonathan Lucroy (MIL vs. SD), and Buster Posey (SF @ ARI).

First base

Chris Davis (BAL vs. DET)

FanDuel: $4,100/DraftKings: $5,200

Aside from the Orioles stack, Davis’ splits against right-handed pitchers are impressive.  With Pelfrey being a gas can pitcher Davis and the rest of the lineup could be in for a huge offensive night.  Here are some of Davis’ career numbers against righties:

  • Slugging percentage: .533
  • ISO: .271
  • wOBA: .373
  • wRC+: 133

Chris Carter (MIL vs. SD)

FanDuel: $3,200/DraftKings: $4,100

Carter is worth a look today at the position.  He has a much better batting average, slugging percentage, and wOBA than we’re used to seeing so it’s possible that his numbers will come back down to earth a little bit.  He’s hit almost half of the home runs that he had last season and is striking out at a lower rate.  Combine that with opposing pitcher, James Shields, giving up 1.2 HR/9, 4 BB/9, 4.5 xFIP this season, Carter and the Brewers can also be considered for a team stack tonight.

Other first basemen to consider: Hanley Ramirez (BOS vs. HOU), Freddie Freeman (ATL vs. PHI), and Alex Gonzalez (LAD vs. NYM).

Second base

Jose Altuve (HOU @ BOS)

FanDuel: $4,500/DraftKings: $5,300

Altuve will be facing David Price tonight, but my interest in him has more to do with Price’s season so far.  Price has been getting hit hard lately and Altuve can help with contributing to that.  Price has give up five or more runs in four out of seven starts, pitched six or more innings four times, only two 10 or more strikeout games, with a BABIP of .373.  Altuve can lead the way for the Astros if Price struggles in this game.

Ian Kinsler (DET @ BAL)

FanDuel: $4,000/DraftKings: $5,000

This game has the highest run total at 9 1/2, and while it looks like the Orioles are a stackable team, the Tigers should be looked at too.  Kinsler’s price on DraftKings is second to Altuve, so he’s either a tournament option there or an easier fit on FanDuel.  After collecting 20 strikeouts as a team, the Tigers offense will look to bounce back against Ubaldo Jiminez and I like Kinsler in this spot leading off.

Other second basemen to consider: Starlin Castro (NYY vs. KC), and Chase Utley (LAD vs. NYM).

Third base

Manny Machado (BAL vs. DET)

FanDuel: $4,300/DraftKings: $5,400 (shortstop eligible)

Right-handers hit Pelfrey extremely well and Machado is having his best season yet, so you can pencil in him into your lineups.  This is a positive matchup for Orioles hitters and we’ve all seen what Machado is capable of doing with the bat.

Matt Carpenter (STL @ LAA)

FanDuel: $4,000/DraftKings: $4,400

Carpenter leading off is another excellent option at third base.  The Cardinals are facing Jered Weaver, who leaves much to be desired.  Weaver has a fly ball rate of 46.7%, while the Cardinals hit 35.8% fly balls as a team with a 14.6% HR/FB rate.  Other lefty bats can be considered along with Carpenter today against the Angels.

Other third basemen to consider: Justin Turner (LAD vs. NYM), and Maikel Franco (PHI @ ATL).

Brandon Crawford (SF @ ARI)

FanDuel: $2,800/DraftKings: $3,700

Shortstop is my least favorite position today, unless you’re using Machado of course.  Digging deep, Crawford against Zack Greinke is a slightly cheaper option with fantasy point upside.  The game is at Chase Field so the ball park shift is a plus for the Giants, and Crawford will have the platoon.

Corey Seager (LAD vs. NYM)

FanDuel: $4,000/DraftKings: $3,700

The price is a lot nicer on DraftKings, but on a slate where obvious shortstop targets are hard to find, you may find yourself completely punting the position or paying up.  Seager’s been putting together nice numbers over the last several games, and Bartolo Colon can be hit.  The run total is low, but Seager is a top option in the Dodgers lineup to score fantasy points.

Other shortstops to consider: Alcides Escobar (KC @ NYY), Erick Aybar (ATL vs. PHI).

Adam Jones (BAL vs. DET)

FanDuel: $2,600/DraftKings: $4,400

There’s a huge price discrepancy for Jones today, and could possibly be the highest owned player of the night on FanDuel.  He’s been hot for the last two games and Jones can continue that against Pelfrey.

Joey Rickard (BAL vs. DET)

FanDuel: $2,900/DraftKings: $3,700

Rickard is another rosterable option from the Orioles and he’s priced higher than Jones.  I like Rickard leading off and should be a fine play in an Orioles stack.

Ryan Braun (MIL vs. SD)

FanDuel: $4,500/DraftKings: $4,500

I always like Braun against lefties, but he’s a viable option against James Shields.  He doesn’t hit much home runs off right-handed pitchers, but against them he has a BABIP of .431, .440 OBP, .434 wOBA, which makes him at least worth a look.

Other outfielders to consider: Jon Jay (SD @ MIL), Denard Span (SF @ ARI), Stephen Piscotty (STL @ LAA), Randal Grichuk (STL @ LAA), and Alex Presley (MIL vs. SD).
