PGA DFS THE PLAYERS Championship Preview

Before brackets drop Sunday, try PGA DFS to warm up your degenerate brain cells until NCAA tournament betting begins. That’s right! It’s that time of year where we transition from trying to predict who scores touchdowns, to guessing who will be rolling in a higher percentage of 15-20 foot birdie putts.

Is it mostly a ridiculous exercise in futility? Pretty much. But, that certainly won’t be stopping me. And, whether my suggestions work out or flame out, it will always be an honor going into every PGA DFS battle with you each week. That, and I have nothing better to do.

First and foremost, in PGA DFS it’s all about getting your guys to the weekend. Generally, I will fill out my roster with guys in the $7,100-$9,000 range. The factors I consider are event history, course layout versus player strengths, recent form, and prime bounce back candidates who are playing well, but happened to miss the cut the prior week.

One factor does not necessarily outweigh another. And, like any good speculative decision-making process, instinct always play a role.

Event Information

Course: TPC Sawgrass, par-72, 7,245 yards, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida

Thank you PGA Tour schedulers! Now, in the second year of it’s new schedule, golf’s unofficial 5th major coincides with one of the sports world’s most anticipated days annually–Selection Sunday! Also, it marks the start of a five-month stretch where we’ll get to witness one player take home one of golf’s most prestigious trophies just about every four weeks.

It also means spring is right around the corner which is critical for people like me who live in Michigan. It’s specifically significant for those of us that live in this region and are already dead on the inside.

But, enough about me not having seen the sun for five months! No matter when this event falls on the calendar, TPC Sawgrass has hosted it every year since 1982. The island green Par-3 on it’s 17th hole is about as iconic of a golf hole as there is in the world, and has helped YouTube give us another time wasting activity while we pretend to work during the day.

Similar to the description for the Honda Classic, TPC Sawgrass is best played with course management in mind. Guys that practice safe golf (and can execute it) as an approach will be better off here. I would favor anyone that has been displaying sharper tee-to-green play lately. Also, because it is such prime event, event history will play a larger role for my targets this week.

Key Metrics and Odds

Week-to-week, I put an emphasis on ball striking (BS), and strokes gained: approach (SGA) the green. They are the best golf statistics that reflect a player’s ability to consistently put themselves in position to have favorable scoring chances, regardless of course setup. I would even argue that high rankings in other stats like putting, birdies, and Par-4 scoring average are directly correlated and a byproduct of strong ball striking and a precise approach performance.

To help sift through the field regarding just these stats, I put the table below together every week using all data from the official PGA Tour website. It is listed in order of each players’ composite ranking, an average of each players’ ranking in these two stats. Sort as you wish.

• Tommy Fleetwood is 3/3 in his career here with the last two finishes inside the top-10.
• After a very uneventful first seven event appearances, Webb Simpson has sandwiched a pair of T-16s with a win here over the last three seasons.
• Sergio Garcia has played here 19 consecutive years. He hasn’t missed a weekend in the last 16. Nine of those weekends have resulted in top-25 finishes, with five inside the top-10 including a win in 2008.
• Another former winner, Adam Scott has a wealth of experience here with relative success. In his 18 career TPC Sawgrass starts, he’s stayed through Sunday 15 times including his current streak of eight in a row. Six of those finishes have been inside the top-20.
• In the six times Jason Day has made the cut of his eight starts, he’s produced four top-10s including his 2016 win.
• Hideki Matsuyama has just one MC in six career event appearances. The other five have all resulted in top-25s including two inside the top-10.

Contest Approach

Even more so than last week, this event represents a major championship field, and the contest prices reflect it. If you’ve read my previews at all before you probably know my policy on these situations. It’s somewhat of PGA DFS commandment of mine–I don’t waste my time or hard earned DFS dollars on the big dogs in events like this. And, here’s why.

This is purely a statistical meat market we are all walking through. For example, the price on Tommy Fleetwood’s carcass last week was 11k. Now, because of such a deep field, his price is reduced significantly. However, I would argue incorrectly so.

I mean, let’s think about this for a second… Sure, there are more top players in the field, but does that make Tommy worse at golf than he was last week? No. Do these additional players get throw inanimate objects at Tommy on the tee box or heckle him in his back swing? No. Tommy is still Tommy. And, yes. I love referring to him just as Tommy.

I get that a deeper field makes the event more of a challenge, but that doesn’t change the fact that–no matter how you want rank them–the difference between the 10th best player in the world and the second or first heading into a golf tournament just isn’t much.

When you add it all up, the best players on tour are likely going to miss 2-3 cuts in a year, approach double digit top-10 finishes, win once, or multiple times for the few individuals having elite seasons. The point is that rostering the winner is helpful, but not a necessity for PGA DFS success. And, based on what I just laid out, there’s a fair chance the winner will come from a 25-50 to 1 odds range anyway.

No Positions

Also, this isn’t like building a football or basketball lineup. There are no positional values to consider. The dynamic of “I have to play CMC at running back or James Harden in a guard slot to have a shot in this slate” does not exist in golf.

In PGA DFS, you are just attempting to identify six players. Six players that all have reasonable case to make the weekend, and have the upside to contend when they get there. I would argue that with something as random as golf performances week-to-week, the floor/upside combination among the top 25-30 players is relatively similar. Therefore, if I am of the belief that the difference in the floor/upside combo of Patrick Cantlay and John Rahm is negligible, I’m defaulting to the cheaper date for DFS purposes as a general rule.

Core Players

These selections are players that I believe have top-25 floors with top 10 upside, and a reasonable case to win. They will be used in all my lineups.

The saving grace of last week’s preview was hitting on Tyrell Hatton and Marc Leishman in the core. Still, I was unable to get the entire core to Saturday. I also had a nervous breakdown at work Friday morning when I saw the letters “WD” next to Jason Day’s name. This week’s selections:

2. Tommy Fleetwood
3. Hideki Matsuyama
4. Gary Woodland
