Now that football is over, PGA DFS is here to provide my weekly addiction of convincing myself that I have the perfect lineup combination to win the top prize on my way to world domination. That’s right! It’s that time of year where we switch from trying to predict who scores touchdowns, to guessing who will be rolling in a higher percentage of 15-20 foot birdie putts.
Is it mostly a ridiculous exercise in futility? Pretty much. But, that certainly won’t be stopping me. And, whether my suggestions work out or flame out, it will always be an honor going into every PGA DFS battle with you each week. That, and I have nothing better to do.
First and foremost, in PGA DFS it’s all about getting your guys to the weekend. The factors I consider are event history, course layout versus player strengths, recent form, and prime bounce back candidates who are playing well, but happened to miss the cut the prior week. One factor does not necessarily outweigh another. And, like any good speculative decision-making process, instinct always play a role.

Event Information
Course: TPC Sawgrass, par 72, 7,245 yards, Ponte Vedra Beach FL
Golf’s unofficial fifth major championship kicks off this week at TPC Sawgrass! As mentioned in previous posts, this week starts a five month run where we get to see who acquires the spoils of golf’s most prestigious events every four weeks. Hopefully, some of us will get to see it in person as well.
Regardless of pandemic impacts, TPC Sawgrass will be the usual host of THE PLAYERS for the 38th consecutive year. The legendary island par 3 on hole 17 is undoubtedly Sawgrass’s primary claim to fame. Because of it’s intimidating layout, and being the second to last hole to play, it’s sure to create plenty of weekend drama. I share this clip each year as proof that this one specific golf hole is “better than most” at realizing the most memorable moments this sport can produce.
Similar to my comments regarding another Florida course, the Honda Classic’s Palm Beach Gardens, course management and familiarity are huge this week. THE PLAYERS isn’t a major, but Sawgrass will definitely be setup in a manner where the smarter players will take their medicine when the course demands it. That said, course history will factor into my targets more significantly this week. Depending on conditions (especially those Florida winds), expect a cut line around even par, and a winning score in the range of 10-15 under par.
Key Metrics and Odds
Week-to-week, I put an emphasis on ball striking (BS), and strokes gained: approach (SGA) the green. They are the best golf statistics that reflect a player’s ability to consistently put themselves in position to have favorable scoring chances, regardless of course setup. I would even argue that high rankings in other stats like putting, birdies, and Par-4 scoring average are directly correlated and a byproduct of strong ball striking and/or a precise approach performance. I’ve added strokes gained: putting (SGP) and applied a weighted average (WA) calculation with the following percentages:
- BS–50%
- SGA–40%
- SGP–10%
The WA metric is meant to serve as a high level illustration on how each player’s all-around form has been up to this point in the season, based on my opinion of how each stat contributes to golf performance results. To help sift through the field regarding just these stats, I put the table below together every week using all data from the official PGA Tour website. It is listed in order of each players’ WA metric ranking. Sort as you wish.

- Tommy Fleetwood is 3/3 in cuts made here with the last two finishes inside the top-10.
- After a below average first seven appearances at Sawgrass, Webb Simpson has sandwiched a pair of T-16s with a win here over the last three starts.
- Sergio Garcia has played here 19 consecutive years. He’s looking to cash a check in 17 straight appearances this year. Nine of the last 16 weekends have resulted in top-25 finishes, with five inside the top-10 including a win in 2008.
- Another former winner, Adam Scott has tons of experience here with relative success. In his 18 career TPC Sawgrass starts, he’s kept weekend hotel reservations 15 times including his current streak of eight in a row. Six of those eight finishes have been inside the top-20.
- In the six times Jason Day has made the cut of his eight PLAYERS starts, he’s produced four top-10s including his 2016 win.
- Hideki Matsuyama has just one MC in six career Sawgrass appearances. The other five have all resulted in top-25s including two inside the top-10. He was also leading the tournament last year before COVID-19 shut the world down.
Contest Approach
In the past, I’ve compared playing PGA DFS to fine dining. It goes like this. You’re out at nice restaurant and trying to decide between the $24 roast chicken dish, and the $35 filet entree. You know that almost every time the filet’s satisfaction will justify the price. But, you also know the roast chicken (garlic mash included of course) has potential to produce equal results. And, because of the reduced price, you’re now able to start with that crab cake and remoulade sauce appetizer.
Maybe, because it’s north of 60 degrees in Michigan right now? Or, subconsciously the royal family news has put the finer things in life in the back of my head? Maybe, I’ve binged watched too many seasons of Below Deck lately that the rich charter guests are rubbing off on me? Maybe, all of the above?
I can’t be for certain why, but I want my goddam filet right now. That’s the reason Rory and DJ are both part of my plans this week. I can’t speak for DJ, but I can say for sure that McIlroy is playing for more than just a trophy this week…

Another player that has actually been consistently providing filet like results, but comes at a roast chicken price is Tony Finau. Big events, small events–it doesn’t matter. Finau’s fantasy floor has simply been one of the best in the world since the restart. I believe the big win is coming for him, and I’ll continue to ride on that intuition until he gives me a reason not to.
Other Considerations
With those three tender bites locked in, I’ll be forced to shop in that risky 6k range like last week. I’ve been revisiting the Doug Ghim well frequently in 2021, and it’s paid off more often than not. He quietly shot up the leaderboard last Saturday with a 65, before faltering with an 81 in the final round. Considering how badly the wind impacted everyone’s final round last week, I’m willing to overlook those results for pretty much anyone. The price and upside combo that he has been able to provide this season will make him part of my plans this week.
Other than Ghim, Andrew Putnam is pretty streaky and has been on a good one lately. He’s reached the weekend in each of his last six starts, and notched three top-10s in the process.
We all know how significant the impact of birdie making ability is in PGA DFS. Two cheaper options that aren’t household names that rank inside the top-20 in birdies per round are, Peter Malnati and Harry Higgs. If you’re taking the filet approach, they are worth consideration in the 6k range.
If you hate this approach altogether and opt for the roast chicken way, Sam Burns ranks 11th (right between DeChambeau and Finau) in birdies per round. He is having a fantastic season, and is a prime PGA DFS bounce back candidate after missing the cut last week. In that same bounce back category, Billy Horschel also missed the cut at the API after finishing runner up in the WGC event the prior week. In seven starts at TPC Sawgrass, he’s cashed a check five times.
