The NFL Draft is so close we can smell it. Dennis Dunbar (@lionsdenNFL) and I, Kyle Robert (@notoriouskro), watched a ton of tape and the NFL Scouting Combine to gather our information. Our wide receiver rankings, like our running back rankings, break down our favorite prospects. Amari Cooper, Dorial Green-Beckham and Kevin White are highly sought after prospects and for good reason.
When evaluating wide receiver prospects, there are a few things Dennis and I look for, including explosion. Explosion is a big factor for wide receivers. It helps them get off the line against defenders as well as explode up to make plays on the ball. Route running is also key. How many routes on the route tree a prospect can run and how fluid these routes are, are important for the development of wide receivers at the next level. When a prospect attempts to make a play on the ball, body control, hand-placement and the separation they can create are all crucial. We then look at the completion of the catch. Consistency catching the ball with their hands and what do they do after completing the catch are examined.
This year’s wide receivers comprise another stellar class full of depth, even if doesn’t have the incredible wealth of talent we saw in 2014. That class may have had more upside, but 2015 will challenge 2014. In three to five seasons, we will see how these two classes compare to each other in terms of high end talent and depth.
