Fantasy football IDP waiver wire: Down goes Derrick Johnson

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnsons out.  Houston Texans first pick of the 2014 NFL draft Jadeveon Clowney is likely out four to six weeks.  And you will have to keep diligent watch on the injury report for St. Louis Rams’ Chris Long, Buffalo Bills Aaron Williams and Miami Dolphins Koa Misi. The first week of the NFL was brutal.  Injuries have likely affected your IDP roster. Now is not the time to panic.  Here are a few players to consider adding to your line-up for week 2:

Defensive Line

DE, Willie Young, Chicago Bears: Admittedly the Bears’ defense wasn’t very good against the Buffalo Bills in their week one meeting.  In that meeting, Young collected two tackles for loss, one assist and one sack.  This week the Bears will travel to San Francisco to play the 49ers.  Young has a chance to be on the field for a lot of plays.  His first week anemic numbers should increase.

DE, Cameron Heyward, Pittsburgh Steelers: This is a pick of opportunity.  The Steelers will play the Baltimore Ravens in this week’s Thursday Night Game.  This short week and the chaos that is currently engulfing the Ravens will not help an offense that could only muster 16 points against the Cincinnati Bengals in week one.  Look for Heyward to take full advantage.

DT, Sen’Derrick Marks, Jacksonville Jaguars:  The Jaguars’ defense is overlooked.  This defense is riddled with really good individual defensive players.  In the first week lost to the Philadelphia Eagles, Marks collected four tackles, one assist and one sack.  This week he will go against the hapless Robert Griffin III and Washington.  Look for Washington to lean on running back Alfred Morris.  Look for Marks to raise his stats.

LB, Sio Moore, Oakland Raiders: Moore had an “OH MY” week against the New York Jets in week one.  He collected 11 tackles, two assists and one sack.  This week the Raiders will play the Houston Texans.  His stats may decrease because come on, those are ridiculous numbers.  But he will continue to ball out.

LB, Larry Foote, Arizona Cardinals:  I know Foote is old.  He is a Steeler throw-away.  Yet in week one against the San Diego Chargers he collected eight tackles.  In week two he will play the impotent offense the New York Giants are currently putting on the field.  Look for Foote to have a very productive outing.

LB, Josh Mauga, Kansas City Chiefs:  With the season injury loss of Derrick Johnson, it is time for Mauga to step up.  He gets his chance in week two against the potent offense of the Denver Broncos.  The Broncos’ offense is on the field for a whole lot of time.

Defensive Backs

CB, Leodis McKelvin, Buffalo Bills: Yep, there is plenty of room on the Bills’ bandwagon.  In week one against the Chicago Bears, McKelvin had 13 solo tackles.  Week two the Bills will play the Miami Dolphins.  A cornerback who tackles is always a good pick-up.

SS, DJ Swearinger, Houston Texans: The downside of Swearinger is his reputation for hard hits.  He gets flagged for perfectly good hits.  When that happens you lose points.  But the Texans have lost Clowney for a month.  Brian Cushing appears to be on a snap count.  So Swearinger is worthy of a spot.  Against Washington, Swearinger collected six tackles, two assist, one sack and one forced fumble.  And that was on top of being flagged for a textbook hit.
