by Ben Rolfe On March 29, 2014
As you will have noticed if you have followed my tiers series, I didn’t do an article for pitchers. The reason for this is that I have never really tracked pitchers and their performances in the past like I have hitters so I did not feel comfortable doing tiers for a group I wasn’t confident with. However, my aim for this year is to have a better understanding of pitchers come the end of the year and by previewing the pitching options each week that is how I intend to do this.
Each week I will highlight the two start pitchers and then further highlight the ones I feel are worth your time and the ones that aren’t. In addition, I will also take a look at the one start pitchers and highlight guys you may want to pick up when they have a decent match up.
This week will actually cover 8 days as because of opening night on Sunday (If you league week started with the Australia games then sorry but rotations were impossible to fully predict at that point). Here are this week’s match ups:

Two Start Pitchers
We have 41 pitchers who are starting twice this week with many of them being some of the best pitchers around so are likely to be 100% owned. Of those many will be started regardless of the match up so they are basically irrelevant to this article so the intrigue lies with the guys beyond the top tier.
Within the tiers below players are not listed in any particular order.
Must Start (All 100% owned):

- Verlander: A relatively good match up vs KC and a tougher one against Baltimore but at least it is at home
- Sale: Minnesota and KC aren’t match ups that will worry you overly
- F. Hernandez: @LAA and @ Oakland means he is playing in two good parks this week
- Strasburg: Neither matchup is overly damaging
- J. Fernandez: Playing twice in his home stadium.
- A. Wainwright: Match up @Cincy has potential for danger but then he goes to Pittsburgh
- Ryu: Two match ups in decent pitching stadiums
- Grienke: Same as above
- Bumgarner: Tough stadium @Arizona and then a potentially tricky match up with the Dodgers but you aren’t sitting him this week.
- Cain: Same as above.
- Weaver: Playing at a great pitchers park in Seattle and playing a poor Houston team = A good week
Safe Starts (Ownership 100% unless stated):
- Price: Two games in his home, pitcher friendly, stadium but against strong line ups.
- Moore: As Above
- Shields: Tough game at Detroit but a better match up against Chicago
- Masterson: Playing in two pitchers parks and one of those is a weak Minnesota line up
- Gray: Two games at home in a pitcher friendly park.
- Teheran: Should be solid against two middle of the road line ups
- Lee: Game @ Texas is a tough match up but I love the one @ Cubs
- Burnett: As above.
- Samardzija: Two nice match ups in decent parks.
- Cueto: Could struggle a little against St. Louis but should be ace @ Mets
- Liriano: Two games at home in a pitchers park.
- Cashner: Always love it when he pitches at home and then add in a start @ Miami and it becomes a really nice week.
- Kazmir (6%): Two starts in Oakland is always nice
Tough Choices (Ownership %):

- Lester (100): Really Tough match up @ Baltimore followed by a tough return home.
- Sabathia (100): Love his match up in Houston but less keen about the one in Toronto. Both hitter friendly parks.
- Dickey (100): Pitchers park in Tampa Bay but his return home concerns me
- Tillman (98): A game at home in a tough park followed by a fearsome Detroit match up
- Wood (88): Playing two weaker line ups but I’m not crazy enough about the parks to think he could be as good as Teheran
- Gee (50): Should provide some strikeouts in two home games
- Kennedy (13): Pitching at home and at Miami is always a good combination. Just not sure I trust him quite enough to be a definite start.
- Scheppers (7): Philly don’t have a great line up but pitching in Texas is always tough and then he goes to pitcher friendly Tampa but they have a decent line up.
- Ramirez (1): Two games in pitchers parks but against two hard hitting line ups
- Eovaldi (1): Playing at home twice against weak line ups means I want to trust him more but I just can’t
- Cahill (1): Two tough games in hitter friendly parks with one of those being in Denver
Risky Starts (Ownership %):
- Gallardo (96): Two tough match ups
- Nolasco (7): Two tough games this week.
- De La Rosa (3): I love the match up @ Miami but in Colorado against Arizona worries me a lot
- Hutchison (2): Has been given the number 2 role in the rotation but I’m not trusting him yet.
- McCarthy (1): A tough match up with San Fran followed by a game in Denver.
- Anderson (1): Same as De La Rosa
One Start Pitchers
Intriguing match ups (Ownership %):

- Kuroda (100) & Nova (99): Both play Houston and there isn’t much in Houston’s line up to worry about
- Kluber (12): I like guys pitching in Oakland whether it is as the home or away team
- Salazar (100) & Carrasco (<1): Both playing against the Twins in Minnesota’s pitcher friendly park. Salazar could potentially have an elite week with this match up and his ability.
- Santiago (2) & Skaggs (2): You may notice a theme developing here because these guys are listed here as they are playing Houston. Downside is that Houston is hitter friendly.
- Roberto Hernandez (0): Match ups against the Cubs have the potential to be very promising.
- Morton (1) & Wandy Rodriguez (1): Simply a case of playing the Cubs at home
- Kennedy (13) & Ross (3): Love San Diego Pitchers when they play at home even in a tough LA Dodgers match up
- Stults (0): Nice match up in Miami
So there we have it for my two start pitchers and my intriguing one start guys for week 1. By no means am I saying drop people who don’t appear on this list for those that do. For example do not drop Cingrani for Kluber but you might want to consider starting the two start guys in the top three tiers over Cingrani. When it comes to the one start guys listed above it is a more of a deep league view in many cases of people who may be worth picking up and plugging in where you are waiting on a Hamels or Minor to return.

| Kenny Britt joins the St Louis Rams |
|
In a move that reunites former coach and player, Kenny Britt has signed a 1 year/1.4M with Rams and coach Jeff Fisher. The Rams took a gamble on Britt even with issues both on and off the field. The question has never been about talent with Britt. Assuming he can stay healthy and avoid problems he could provide some serious value as a late round flyer. Britt is a prefect guy to stash and hope he hits.
|
|
| DeSean Jackson is headed to Washington |
|
DeSean Jackson will now get two opportunities a year to burn his former team, the Eagles after signing a 3 year deal with the division rival Redskins. Jackson will provide relatively the same fantasy value in as the deep threat in Jay Gruden’s offense. The addition of Jackson will help RG3 significantly who has top 5 potential even if his running is limited. He should also open the field for Pierre Garçon and give Alfred Morris more running room.

|
| Raiders sign Maurice Jones Drew to 3-year deal |
|
The Raiders have signed MJD to a 3-year deal. So they have signed DMC, and Now MJD. It all sounds like a washed up rap group going on in the Bay Area. From a fantasy football standpoint, this is awful news for the young, and talented, Latavius Murray. MJD just turned 29, so the Raiders aren’t getting younger by any means. I see minimal fantasy relevance going on here.

| Value Fantasy Players On The Rise |
|
Value plays are a must in DFS. Here’s a few guys with low values on the up swing with values all under $5,400 on Draft Kings: Brian Roberts – $5,400 It can still be a Holiday with no Jrue! Over last 7 games 15PPG, 5APG, 2RPG, 1.5 SPG, & 2TPPG. Kent Bazemore – $3,200 2 games with new team. 16PPG, 2.5APG, 1.5RPG, 2SPG, & 1.5TPPG. In Mike D’s system expect numbers to climb. Kyle Singler – $4,100 Over last 7 games 12PPG, 4RPG, 1.5APG, 2SPG, while playing around 37 minutes a game. Thomas Robinson – $3,000 No Lamarcus means it’s Thomas time. February 23rd stat line. …

| The State Of The Sixers |
|
Don’t be scared by the big dump in Philadelphia, still tons of value which equal fantasy gold. Thaddeus ” The Beast” Young – $7,800 DK- Young has been a beast, averaging 60 fantasy points over last 2 games. Enough said! Tony Wroten – $4,700 DK- Tony very productive when he gets minutes. Over last 2 games he is averaging 20PPG, 3RPG, 3.5APG, & 1SPG. James Anderson – $4,100 DK- Over last 2 James averaging 11PPG, 2RPG, 3APG, & 1.5SPG. More minutes better numbers. Byron Mullens – $3,000 DK- Been riding pine in LA, conditioning inproves expect big things. In only 14 minutes on Feb …

| Ervin Santana |
|
Santana will make his spring training debut tomorrow. According to Adam Rubin, Santana will get the start against the Mets. Santana threw live batting practice to hitters yesterday and felt fine. Stamina will be something to watch. The number of pitches and innings he throws will indicate how far behind he is from the rest of the staff. Source: Adam Rubin on Twitter
|
|
| Nick Castellanos |
|
Castellanos is having a great spring. He is hitting .400 in 30 at-bats. Manager Brad Ausmus spoke highly of Castellanos, “He’s had good at-bats, as good as anyone on the team.” Ausmus expressed not to raise expectations, “It’s going to change during the regular season. These at-bats are used to get your rhythm and timing down to recognize different counts you’re going to be put in during the season.” Source: Detriot Free Press

| Zach Britton |

Britton was strong out of the pen again Wednesday. Britton has yet to be told whether he will start the season in the rotation or bullpen. Britton has allowed just one earned run in seven innings this spring, striking out seven batters and walking two. Source: Baltimore Sun

|
| Christian Benteke, Aston Villa – Forward |
|
Aston Villa has been dealt a huge blow with the news that their star forward has suffered a torn Achilles tendon. Benteke is set to miss a minimum of six months, which also means that he will also miss out on representing Belgium in the World Cup this summer. Since signing with Aston Villa, Benteke has scored 35.8% of their PL goals at a chance conversion rate of 18.9% on his 10 goals scored this season. Safe to say Aston Villa, as well as Benteke’s fantasy mangers will be missing his services greatly. Source: @Squawka / @WhoScored

|
| Ross Barkley, Everton – Midfielder |
|
Updating a previous report, Everton club manager Roberto Martinez labeled Barkley as “touch and go” as far as being fit enough to feature when Everton hosts Arsenal this Sunday. Looks to be heading for a late fit test to determine the availability come kickoff in a match that will be ever important for either club. Also still being assessed after missing the last five league matches is Phil Jagielka. Martinez said the club’s approach with the defender remains cautious and he will need to be 100% fit before returning to the pitch. Source: @PhysioRoom
|
|
| Emmanuel Adebayor, Totenham – Forward |
|
After missing out on the previous two league matches due to injury, the striker has returned to training this week ahead of the Spurs upcoming match at White Hart Lane against Sunderland. Adebayor has been out since the 0-1 defeat coming at the hands of Arsenal with a heel injury, but looks to return to fitness and feature in the match come Monday. This will be a timely return to the teamsheet as fellow striker Roberto Soldado is still being assessed after leaving the match on Sunday against Liverpool with a hamstring injury. | TUF: Brazil 3 |
|
The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3 will debut March 9 on UFC Fight Pass. The show, which features Wanderlei Silva (35-12-1 MMA, 5-7 UFC) and Chael Sonnen (28-14-1 MMA, 7-6 UFC) as opposing Head Coaches, recently wrapped up filming in Brazil. Sonnen and Silva will headline a UFC card on May 31 in a yet to be determined city in Brazil.

| Bart Palaszewski |
|
Bart Palaszewski, a former WEC and UFC fighter, has officially announced his retirement from MMA. One of only two fighters to beat current UFC Champion Anthony Pettis, Palaszewski (36-17) most recently fought at The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale, where he was submitted by Cole Miller. Soon after that loss, he was released from his UFC contract. He hadn’t fought since.

Ok so im in a 12 team H2H points dynasty league. I’m the defending champ and i have what i’d like to call a stable of horses as my pitchers. I gotta start 5 of the following 10 guys… Three of which are easy to sit this week with Yu (out on DL), Cole (1 start), Morrow (1 start). The other 7 are tricky. Strasburg, Sale, Lee, Fernandez, Gray, Cain, Lester. Realistically like you stated above, Lester has 2 tough games and im content sitting him. Sale, Lee, Fernandez, and Strasburg for me are must starts given their talent and match ups. Comes down to who do i wanna start between Gray and Cain. Cains the better pitcher but he’s got two tougher offenses to face both of which are road games i believe. Gray gets both games at O.Co and while he goes up against two legit aces in Felix and Masterson their offenses don’t scare me as much as the dbacks and dodgers do. Would you roll with Gray or Cain in my decision? Thanks!
To me this is actually a three way debate: Cain, Lee and Gray
Cain: Arizona struggled to get going in Australia and their line up isnt that amazing. LAD’s park isn’t likely to hurt him either.
Lee: Plays the toughest line up in the best hitting park in Texas and then plays the worst hitting team
Gray: Two games at home against less than great line ups.
Im playing Cain and Gray and sitting Lee
