CFB DFS Week 3 – Day Slate

We all know Alabama is going win the natty anyway, so why not spice your Saturday’s with a little CFB DFS action! As always, I focus on DraftKings targets each week here on Fake Pigskin. My goal is to identify three to four low-cost/reasonable floor targets as foundational pieces for all my lineups.

This way, you start by boosting your remaining price per player in the range to roster as many high floor/high upside guys who we all anticipate substantial statistical output from.

For example, I am not going to come at you with hot suggestions like C.J. Stroud and Spencer Rattler. What I will do is point out that rostering the expensive QB duo will leave your average remaining price per player at $5,083. My objective each week will be to offer a reasonable path to affording the best players. Before reality sets in for Florida and the rest of the country, let’s find the path towards Week 3 CFB DFS domination!

Isaiah Likely | TE | $4,400 Costal Carolina

This 6’4″ 240 lb senior is the clear second option for quarterback Grayson McCall in the Chanticleers passing game. His five touchdowns in 10 games last season suggest he is more likely (HEY OH!) than not to find pay dirt soon in 2021. Last season, he averaged a 3-60-0.5 line and caught five balls a piece in the first two games this season so the floor is solid here. Considering the soft matchup, solid quarterback play, and a vegas projection of roughly 36 points, Likely is very likely (I can’t help it) one of my favorite price/floor/ceiling combination plates on the board at any position. But wait, there’s more!

King Doerue | RB | $4,600 Purdue

With workhorse lead back Zander Horvath going down with an injury, Doerue should have the first crack at taking the reigns in the Boilermaker backfield. And, it couldn’t have come at a better time against a seemingly shitty Notre Dame defense that barely got by Toledo after allowing Florida State over 450 yards of offense. You know, that same Seminole squad that mustered just 329 yards of offense in a loss at home to Jacksonville State the next week. Gulp…

Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm has always had a knack for churning out productive offenses sans blue chip talent. Back in 2019 with another injury riddled backfield, Doerue gained starter experience and managed solid production in the right matchups. As a veteran tailback with by far the most knowledge of Brohm’s system, the Texas native should be looking at 15-20 touches in a plus matchup. At his price, he’s definitely a top paydown option at running back on the board. In a related story, also see Will Shipley for Clemson.

Calvin Jackson Jr. | WR | $4,900 Washington State

Through two games this season, this senior is operating as the 1-1A option for sophomore quarterback Jayden de Laura in the Cougar pass attack. Is this the same pass happy air raid offense from the Mike Leach days? No. But, they’re at home against a very mediocre USC defense that just had their head coach axed, in the highest projected scoring game on the CFB DFS slate.

As a former feature on Netflix’s “Last Chance U”, Jackson Jr.’s road to securing a stable role in the Cougar offense has been a long one. Now that he has it, many believe it’s his time to breakout in his final college season. He profiles as a YAC machine/get him the ball in space type of player so de Laura will make it a point to go his way on several plays designed for Jackson. I think a 5-6 catch, 60ish yards line is his floor in this game with reasonable upside.

Fading Quarterback Chalk

Besides Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder, the top-5 most expensive quarterbacks are difficult not to go with for this slate. Ridder has a difficult matchup on the road at Indiana that projects to be one of the lowest scoring affairs of the day.

While Anthony Richardson has been explosive for Florida and has a decent price, the Gators are facing a stiff Alabama defense–their first true test of the season. Oh, and he is in a full blown rotation with Emory Jones anyway. So likely is Jack Coan for Notre Dame.

That said, I would target specific games if I paid down at the quarterback position from this board. The best options in my opinion for that would be FSU/Wake and USC/WSU because they both project to be high scoring, closer contests. Either quarterback on each side of those matchups has potential to outperform their modest prices. And, with Wake’s Sam Hartman and Washington State’s Jayden de Laura you get a little upside from their running ability. Speaking the Irish’s offensive defense again, Jack Plummer could also prove to be useful Saturday afternoon in South Bend.

Chalk I Can’t Live Without

However, we’re not looking for useful. We’re looking for greatness! For that, I see a lot of two quarterback combos with a Buckeye, a Sooner, and an Elephant permutating everywhere in my lineups. Are they expensive? Yes. But, I’ve already provided the path to afford them above. Besides, who else on this board can offer a damn near 30 point floor with a 40 plus point upside?….
