PGA DFS RBC Heritage Preview

Spring is here along with PGA DFS providing my weekly addiction of convincing myself that I have the perfect lineup combination to win the top prize on my way to world domination. That’s right! It’s that time of year where we attempt to guess who will be rolling in a higher percentage of 15-20 foot birdie putts.

Is it mostly a ridiculous exercise in futility? Pretty much. But, that certainly won’t be stopping me. And, whether my suggestions work out or flame out, it will always be an honor going into every PGA DFS battle with you each week. That, and I have nothing better to do.

First and foremost, in PGA DFS it’s all about getting your guys to the weekend. The factors I consider are event history, course layout versus player strengths, recent form, and prime bounce back candidates who are playing well, but happened to miss the cut the prior week. One factor does not necessarily outweigh another. And, like any good speculative decision-making process, instinct always play a role.

Event Information

Course: Harbour Town Golf Links, Par 71, 7,100 yards, Hilton Head, SC

The RBC Heritage (RBCH) returns to it’s rightful annual Masters hangover spot on the schedule in 2021. Besides last season’s COVID adjusted schedule, that is where the RBCH has landed every year since 1983. It has been an official tour event since 1969, and Hilton Head’s Harbour Town Golf Link has played host every time.

Similar to last week, this tournament also has it’s share of rich traditions and even has it’s own champions jacket. Dissimilar to last week, no one outside of Hilton Head really cares or remembers them. If you happen to watch the television broadcast, you’ll likely see the Sir Willie mascot parading around the course. Legend has it, the real Sir Willie was a captain to the Society of Golfers in Blackheath, England in the late 1700s. Somehow, he wound up in the Hilton Head area and introduced the locals to the game of golf, so I guess that’s a big deal.

Crowd Effect

Anyway, HTGL typically plays as one of the easier courses on tour. Most of it’s fairways are tree lined on both sides. The combination of that and a shorter track puts a premium on accuracy off the tee over distance. There are several holes where players will elect to leave the driver in the bag in favor of their favorite hybrid clubs or driving irons for that very reason.

Scoring was way up last season without fans when Webb Simpson set the 72-hole course record at 22 shots under par. We’ll see if that PGA DFS pace can be replicated with some fans back, but I would expect a cut line and winning score more reflective of the previous five years. That said, we’ll probably be looking at a cut line around even par, and a winning score between 13-15 under par.

Key Metrics and Odds

Week-to-week, I put an emphasis on ball striking (BS), and strokes gained: approach (SGA) the green. They are the best golf statistics that reflect a player’s ability to consistently put themselves in position to have favorable scoring chances, regardless of course setup. I would even argue that high rankings in other stats like putting, birdies, and Par-4 scoring average are directly correlated and a byproduct of strong ball striking and/or a precise approach performance. I’ve added strokes gained: putting (SGP) and applied a weighted average (WA) calculation with the following percentages:

• BS–50%
• SGA–40%
• SGP–10%

The WA metric is meant to serve as a high level illustration on how each player’s all-around form has been up to this point in the season, based on my opinion of how each stat contributes to golf performance results. To help sift through the field regarding just these stats, I put the table below together every week using all data from the official PGA Tour website. It is listed in order of each players’ WA metric ranking. Sort as you wish.

• You can’t talk HTGL without acknowledging Mr. Luke Donald’s track record. In his last three appearances he has made just one cut so we may be at the tail end of this trend. However, prior to 2018, the Englishman has a nine year run here where he notched seven finishes in second or third place. He’ll be a tempting option at the contest minimum price to make a cut.
• Quietly coming off a T-12 at the Masters, Kevin Na arrives at Hilton Head with good memories. In 14 career appearances here, the South Korea native has cashed 10 checks, including five top-10 finishes. Also named Kevin, Streelman and Kisner have enjoyed their time here as well. • Another tour veteran, Matt Kuchar, will be going for his 17th consecutive weekend in this event. Including 2014’s win, the Georgia Tech alum has six top-10 finishes here in his career.
• Englishman Ian Poulter is a perfect 10/10 in career cuts made in Hilton Head. He has finished T-14 or higher over the last four years in this event.
• For good reason, Webb Simpson is one of top favorites to win this week. The RBC Heritage defending champion will be going for his 11th straight weekend in this event that includes seven top-25s, and three top-10 finishes.

Contest Approach

Based on the softer field, pricing, and course history I like starting my lineup with the aforementioned three Kevins this week. I also like to target veterans that intentionally schedule these major championship bookend events on a regular basis in contests like this. It tells me that they genuinely enjoy the venue and course they are playing. And, that they likely view it as a solid opportunity to grab a top-10 paycheck toward their next waterfront property home.

With those three locked in, it leaves your average remaining price per player at $8,967. This is a very flexible position that allows you to proceed any which way your PGA DFS heart desires. Grabbing one five figure guy like a Webb Simpson, and a 9k range player like last week’s breakout star, Will Zalatoris, is the chalkier path to take. The more risk adverse approach would be to avoid the 6k range by targeting one of those chalkier two, then filling out the rest of your slots with second tier players that possess the higher fantasy floors.

Other Considerations

Veterans like Matt Kuchar and Si Woo Kim are a couple of candidates I like this week that fit the profile. In the case of Si Woo, he is a notoriously streaky player that seems to be on a good one at the moment. In his last three starts he’s finished T-9 (PLAYERS), T-23 (Valero), and T-12 at the Masters. Before missing his last two RBCH cuts, he had a solo second place finish here in 2018.

Whether it’s PGA DFS or the straight betting market, another player garnering my consideration is Matt “not Matthew” Fitzpatrick. He’s very accurate of the tee (ranks 17th), and has been toward the top of damn near every leaderboard in 2021, with the exception of last week’s T-34 at the Masters. In his only RBCH appearance last season, he earned a T-14 finish.

Core Four

Each week, I identify four players that I want to build around in my DK lineups. These selections are players that I believe have top-25 floors with top 10 upside, and a reasonable case to win. They will be used in all my lineups. This week’s selections:
