In addition to a litany on injuries on the defensive side of the ball, there are four teams on a bye this week. So who to start may come down to players that you are unfamiliar with, that doesn’t mean they won’t produce.
FOYESADE OLUOKUN, ATLANTA FALCONS, ROSTERED 5% YAHOO LEAGUES
Oluokun had 14 total tackles, and one tackle for loss in his Week 5 match-up against the Carolina Panthers. The Falcons are now playing under a new coach and against the Minnesota Vikings this week. The Vikings have given up the ninth most fantasy points to the linebacker position.
TYRELL ADAMS, HOUSTON TEXANS, ROSTERED 31% YAHOO LEAGUES
The Texans also are under “new management” but this will be their second week. Bernadrick McKinney is out for the season. Adams saw himself on the field for 89% of the defensive snaps in Week 5. He finished with 13 total tackles, one tackle for loss and one fumble recovery. The Texans will now face the Tennessee Titans who are going on an unprecedented short week. They also run the ball on an average of 34 attempts per game, that would be third most in the NFL.
DE, EMMANUEL OGBAH, MIAMI DOLPHINS, ROSTERED 4% YAHOO LEAGUES
If you have read either of the articles (please do) on defensive steamers or sleepers you will know that I am high on the Dolphins this week. Mainly because they are playing the 0-5, Adam Gase-led New York Jets, who are not only averaging 15 points a game (32nd in NFL) but also are giving up an average of three sacks per game (23rd in the NFL). Ogbah for his part has had at least one sack in his last two games.
DE, CARL LAWSON, CINCINNATI, ROSTERED 5% YAHOO LEAGUES
Sam Hubbard is on IR. This puts Lawson firmly on start status in Cincinnati. Lawson currently has 3.5 sacks, 15 total sacks, two tackles for loss and one forced fumble. The Bengals will be going up against the Indianapolis Colts which will cause some to shy away from Lawson. But keep in mind that the Bengals’ defensive line is stacked. That should mean Carlos Dunlap and Geno Atkins get most of the attention, allowing Lawson to do his thing.
CORNERBACK, PIERRE DESIR, NEW YORK JETS, ROSTERED 11% YAHOO LEAGUES
The best thing about having an IDP player on a team with a crappy offense is that the defense sees a lot of time on the field. Desir is making the most of his time. In Week 4 he had eight tackles, two interceptions and a touchdown. He followed that up in Week 5 with 11 total tackles. This week against the Miami Dolphins, he should have lots of opportunity to pad his stats.
SAFETY, JOSH JONES, JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS, ROSTERED 12% YAHOO LEAGUES
Don’t be thrown off on his stats from last week. He was tossed from the game for a helmet-to-helmet hit so he was only on the field for 52% of defensive snaps. It doesn’t look like he will be suspended for the hit so he is in play this week.
Going into Week 5, Jones ranked third in total tackles, while leading all safeties in solo tackles. This week he will meet the Detroit Lions, who have given up the ninth most fantasy points to the safety position.
