NFL Eliminator Challenge: Week 9

Welcome to Week Nine of season seven of our NFL Eliminator Challenge series!  For the second week in a row, we went 3-0 and all three of our picks once again all won by more than a touchdown, with our closest game being decided by ten points. Weeks don’t get much better than this so let’s make it three in a row!  Read on and feel free to comment at the bottom or hit me up on twitter!

Step 1 – Avoid Division Matchups

Last week, we had zero division matchups for the first time I can remember, in a very long time.  That being said, we are back to division matchups again this week, and I would avoid them at all costs.  I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, do yourself a favor and avoid the below division games:

  • San Francisco at Arizona
  • Houston at Jacksonville
  • New York Jets at Miami
  • Dallas at New York Giants

Step 2 – Avoid Marquee Matchups

While the Thursday night matchup wasn’t the most exciting, we did get some good action on Sunday and Monday night.  On Sunday, we saw the Packers and Chiefs go head to head. Even with KC’s star quarterback missing, the game only ended up being decided by a single touchdown.  Then on Monday, the Dolphins came out swinging in a shocker, jumping to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter before falling back down to earth in the following three quarters of play.  Unless you want to take a chance, I would avoid the below marquee games:

  • San Francisco at Arizona
  • New England at Baltimore
  • Dallas at New York Giants

Step 3 – Avoid Picking Against Home Field Advantage

Finally, we see a week where the home teams decided to show up.  While Atlanta and KC didn’t exactly pull off the upsets, both played well and came close.  In total, 11 games last week were won by the home team, which almost seems like a record the way this season has gone.  Be aware and avoid the below games where the favorite is the away team:

  • San Francisco at Arizona
  • New York Jets at Miami
  • Houston at Jacksonville
  • Indianapolis at Pittsburgh
  • Cleveland at Denver
  • Green Bay at Los Angeles Chargers
  • New England at Baltimore
  • Dallas at New York Giants

Step 4 – Make your pick!

My pick of the week is:

  •  Buffalo Bills over the Washington Redskins

Yes, Buffalo is coming off a tough loss at home, against the Eagles last weekend. But this is still the same team that started the season 5-1 and played the undefeated Patriots, closer than anyone else this season.  This is a good team and they are playing the same Redskins team that were a failed two point conversion away from losing to the Dolphins only a few weeks ago.  This won’t be a blowout, but the Bills should rebound in this one.

Other options I like this week:

  • Seattle Seahawks over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

If I hadn’t picked Seattle as the pick of the week in Week 1, this would be my favorite pick this week.  Russell Wilson is having an MVP season and they seem to be getting better by the week.  They are playing at home up in Seattle and they have Tampa Bay making a very long trip cross country, while their starting quarterback seems to be getting worse as the season goes on.  This should be a high scoring affair, benefiting the Seahawks.

  • Philadelphia Eagles over the Chicago Bears

This isn’t my favorite pick, but this is more about the Bears’ struggles at quarterback and the Eagles talent being better than their performance on the field as of late.  This should be a close, possibly low scoring affair, but I’d rather put my money on Wentz over anyone the Bears could put behind center this weekend.

Overall Record = 18-6
