NFL Eliminator Challenge: Week 14

Welcome to week fourteen of our NFL Eliminator Challenge series!  Last week we saw an upset of the ages as the Cardinals with a rookie QB, a team many thought was one of, if not the worst team in the NFL, beat the Green Bay Packers with Aaron Rodgers at the helm.  Definitely didn’t see that coming.  Thankfully, we hit on our two alternate picks, getting our week to a 2-1 mark.  Time to get back to our 3-0 ways.  Read on and feel free to comment at the bottom or hit me up on twitter!

Step 1 – Avoid Division Matchups

Last week was a great week for division matchups.  The red-hot Colts put up a goose egg in Jacksonville.  The Bills were a dropped pass away from beating the Dolphins in Miami.  The Tampa Bay Buccaneers upset the Panthers in front of their home crowd.  Even the Raiders were able to put up 33 points against their rival, the Chiefs, losing to one of the best teams in the league by only one score.  I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, do yourself a favor and avoid the below division games:

  • Jacksonville Jaguars at Tennessee Titans
  • New York Jets at Buffalo Bills
  • Indianapolis Colts at Houston Texans
  • New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins
  • New Orleans Saints at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • New York Giants at Washington Redskins
  • Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys

Step 2 – Avoid Marquee Matchups

Who would have thought that the Cowboys would be the team to shut down the Saints high flying offense.  Certainly not me, but that’s why I avoid prime time games, and I suggest you do the same.  Unless you want to take a chance, I would avoid the below marquee games:

  • Jacksonville Jaguars at Tennessee Titans
  • Los Angeles Rams at Chicago Bears
  • Minnesota Vikings at Seattle Seahawks

Step 3 – Avoid Picking Against Home Field Advantage

Last week was not a week where home field advantage was as clear as previous weeks.  That being said, we still saw a really good Bears team lose to a really bad Giants team, in part due to playing in New York.  Be aware and avoid the below games where the favorite is the away team:

  • Carolina Panthers at Cleveland Browns
  • Denver Broncos at San Francisco 49ers
  • Detroit Lions at Arizona Cardinals
  • Pittsburgh Steelers at Oakland Raiders

Step 4 – Make your pick!

My pick of the week is:

  • Los Angeles Chargers over the Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals have been devastated by injuries.  As of now, their starting quarterback, top wide receiver, and best tight end are all done for the season.  On the other side of the field is a red-hot Chargers team, making a run at the playoffs and possibly challenging for a division crown.  This should be a blow out in LA.

Other options I like this week:

  • Kansas City Chiefs over the Baltimore Ravens

While Baltimore is a very good team fighting for a playoff spot, the Chiefs may be the best team in the AFC and with the Chargers hot on their heels, they know they can’t take their foot off the pedal.  I also worry if the Raven’s offense can keep pace with a Chiefs offense that can put up 30 points without even trying.

  • Green Bay Packers over the Atlanta Falcons

For whatever reason, I like picking teams that have let me down the week prior.  That being said, I also believe teams get regenerated after their head coach is fired.  While I may not be a huge Joe Philbin fan, he was once known for having an offensive mind and I think Aaron Rodgers will be extra motivated in this one to remind people how good he is.  I expect a close, high scoring game, with the Packers coming out on top.

Overall record: 30-9

Last week record: 2-1
