Sigmund Bloom was interviewed by Fakepigskin’s Justin Lonero, you can find him on twitter @lonero_justin.
Where are you from? And who are your “teams”?
Originally from Bentleyville PA, about 30 miles south of Pittsburgh. Spent a lot of time in New Mexico as a youngin, too. Syracuse University ’97… I’m a Steelers, Pirates, Penguins, Pitt, Syracuse fan to the end.
Recently I have interviewed some of the best Fantasy football minds around (Dave Richard, Nathan Zegura, Evan Silva most recently) I enjoy the perspective and insights from the most knowledgeable. Who do you write for ? And how long have you been writing about fantasy football?
I write full-time for Footballguys.com, where I am part-owner of the company, co-host of our podcast “The Audible” and oversee content and new hires. I’ve been writing about fantasy football for 10 years.
You are also a big podcast guy.. What advice would you give to someone starting a podcast? And what is the best way to keep the listener interested? What is the name of your podcast?
We started “The Audible” basically as the podcast we wanted to listen to. I think the key is to make something you would find worthy of your own time, and genuinely enjoying audience interaction to build your community. You make fans one by one, there are no shortcuts. Make yourself available on twitter and include listener questions, suggestions, etc. Don’t “try” to be entertaining or informative, just talk to people the way you would want to be talked to. I would recommend taking stands instead of riding the fence and otherwise telling the people something they might not know instead of being the same old same old or playing it safe. You do need provide something that isn’t already out there. We were lucky to start podcasting at a time that it was brand new.
How long have you been playing fantasy football, and what is your favorite format?
Ive been playing fantasy football for 15 years. I love DEEP 16 team dynasty leagues with full IDP lineups.
If there were a couple pieces of advice you would give to the average fantasy football player.. What would it be?
Trust your gut, make your team YOUR team. The point of this is still fun and distraction and its more fun to live and die with “your guys”. On the trade front, the time when no one would rationally trade a player or trade for a player just might be the smartest time to trade or part with them. Don’t make lineup changes right before kickoff.
Who are some sleepers? Breakout players and busts you can see in 2014?
I love Andrew Hawkins sleeper PPR potential in Cleveland. Dwayne Allen is my favorite late round TE to target. I would avoid Wes Welker anywhere near his current ADP.
Social media has allowed us to get advice and insights from just about anyone. Who are your “must” follows on Twitter for the reader to gain the most wisdom fantasy wise?
I could go on and on here, but I’ll limit it to five: @mattwaldman @CecilLammey @JeneBramel @evansilva @LateRoundQB
What is your favorite thing about fantasy football?
Shared experience with your community and the way it seems like you can figure it out, but any time you think you have, it humbles you all over again.
If you could sit with one NFL player this preseason and ask him about his fantasy value who would it be?
Lastly, Who are some of your favorite rookies to keep an eye on this season?
Kelvin Benjamin (WR-CAR), Cody Latimer (WR-DEN), Isaiah Crowell (RB-CLE), Devonta Freeman (RB-ATL)
