NFL Eliminator Challenge: Week 8

Welcome to Week Eight of season seven of our NFL Eliminator Challenge series!  We finally got back to 3-0 and all three of our picks won by more than a touchdown. Weeks don’t get much better than that, so let’s do it again for Week Eight!  Read on and feel free to comment at the bottom or hit me up on twitter!

Step 1 – Avoid Division Matchups

Last week, we had six division matchups, and while there weren’t a ton of major upsets, we did see some surprises.  The Colts beat a Texans team many had already pegged to win their division.  Not so fast.  We also saw a Cowboys team that went from losing to a bad Jets team two weeks ago, to beating a good division rival, Eagles team, this past Sunday.  I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, do yourself a favor and avoid the below division games:

  •  None
*I couldn’t tell you the last time a week has had 0 division matchups

Step 2 – Avoid Marquee Matchups

Welp, so much for all the great prime time games we have gotten to enjoy this season.  Instead, in Week Seven we got a KC blowout, followed by a Dallas upset and blowout, and don’t get me started about Monday night.  Still think Adam Gase is an offensive genius New York???  Unless you want to take a chance, I would avoid the below marquee games:

  • Washington at Minnesota
  • Green Bay at Kansas City
  • Miami at Pittsburgh

Step 3 – Avoid Picking Against Home Field Advantage

The season of weird continues, as away teams keep winning.  Last week, only five home teams won out of 14 total games.  We saw both the Chicago Bears and Seattle Seahawks lose at home by more than ten points.  If that doesn’t tell you anything about this season being abnormal, I don’t know what else to tell you.  Be aware and avoid the below games where the favorite is the away team:

  • Seattle at Atlanta
  • Green Bay at Kansas City

Step 4 – Make your pick!

My pick of the week is:

  •  New Orleans Saints over the Arizona Cardinals

There were so many great options this week, it was hard to pick just one.  That being said, many may question picking against a team on a three game win streak, like Arizona.  However, take a closer look at who Arizona has beaten: Cincinnati, Atlanta and the Giants.  Not exactly heavyweights.  Now take a look at what the Saints did last week to a great Bears defense.  Clearly, we don’t need to wait for Brees to get back before taking New Orleans as our pick of the week.

Other options I like this week:

  • Los Angeles Rams over the Cincinnati Bengals

If we hadn’t already picked the Rams earlier this season, this would undoubtedly be our pick of the week.  The Bengals look to be on the path to a zero or one win season and the Rams have too much talent for their 4-3 record to reflect.  I expect this to be a major blowout.

  • Minnesota Viking over the Washington Redskins

Since our rules aren’t working this season anyways, why not go with the Thursday night matchup.  The Redskins are just as bad as the Bengals (if not worse) and the Vikings seem to be hitting their stride this season.  Expect another Thursday night blowout in Week Eight.

Overall Record = 15-6
