After five weeks of the NFL season there are very few hidden gems left on the waiver wire. Now instead of finding under drafted players with increases in volume we need to transition to finding the “Next Man Up” in key situations.
Also this time of the year we are getting into the Bye week decisions to find a streaming option to quarterback or tight end too. Let’s go shopping for some outstanding choices at each position and check your league rules to see if there are bonus points for great mustaches.
QB on the Block
Gardner Minshew – 76% Available
Gardner Minshew has received more attention for his mustache and bandanna but he has developed into a really good quarterback and has scored the 8th most fantasy points this season. Jacksonville has a great rushing attack that defenses have to respect which will open up some options for Minshew to hit.

Teddy Bridgewater – 91% Available
This is simply a plug and play option for a few more weeks as the starter Drew Brees will be back sooner than earlier forecasts. But if you need a streaming option at quarterback during the Bye weeks you can count on Teddy to fill in as well for your fantasy team as he is doing for the real life Saints.
RB on the Block
Ito Smith – 86% Available
Ito Smith is already getting lots of work in the passing game and with the Falcons defense that will come in handy right away. Devonta Freeman will miss time or his lack of strong plays might earn more playing time for the next man up which is Smith.
Tra Carson – 100% Available
Tra Carson has no immediate value but if you own Aaron Jones or have an open roster spot it might be a good idea to grab Carson. Jamaal Williams is likely to be out several more weeks and for some reason rookie Dexter Williams is behind Carson on the depth chart right now.
WR on the Block
Diontae Johnson – 66% Available
It will hurt Johnson’s value with the Steelers likely to be using their third string quarterback for the next week or two but the second wide receiver with the Steelers is likely to have good value. Grab him now and hold him on your bench until you see how the offense progresses over the next couple of weeks.
Auden Tate – 78% Available
AJ Green is either recovering slow from his injury or holding out for a trade. John Ross is done for the season. The next man up for the Bengals to play opposite of Tyler Boyd is either Auden Tate or Damion Willis. Tate is a big body receiver who earned the most snaps with Ross out last week and could develop into an excellent red zone target.
TE on the Block
Jack Doyle – 74%
TY Hilton is hurting and Deon Cain can’t seem to catch the ball. With fellow tight ends Eric Ebron and Mo Allie-Cox adequate as blockers we might see Doyle get to run more routes. He is not the sexy pick but a good streaming option to replace your starter on his Bye week and not be shut out in PPR format.
Gerald Everett – 90% Available
Everett is a player who has succeeded when given a chance in his young career but it is a small sample size. Tyler Higbee was getting more snaps at tight end but he is banged up which has given Everett a chance the last two weeks to produce.

Remember to keep an eye out for the waiver wire in your league because fantasy players typically drop under producing players during their Bye week to find a replacement at another position. There might be a few gems you find this time of the year so it pays to stay alert. As you lose a player to injury make sure to find that “Next Man Up” at key positions.
