College Football Picks Against the Spread: Week 8, 2018

Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence

Welcome to Week 8! The season is rolling along and my College Football picks have been straight fuego. I went 5-1 in the column for a second straight week. Over the last three weeks I’m 14-4. I even gave you some outright winners. That said, we need to remain disciplined and not go too crazy so we can keep this train rolling.

This week make two stops in the SEC and head to Clemson for ACC showdown. Of course I will give you some bonus picks for even more fun.

Clemson Tigers -17.5 vs North Carolina State Wolfpack

In theory this should be one of the best games, if not the best game on Saturday. We have two undefeated teams that are battling for the ACC crown. Clemson comes into this game ranked #3 in the AP Poll and the Wolfpack are ranked #16. However (extreme Stephen A. Smith voice) Clemson is favored by 17.5 points.

This game screams take the Tigers. The line has moved to 17.5 from 17 where it opened. The Wolfpacks 5 wins have come against James Madison, Georgia State, Marshall, Virginia and Boston College. Not exactly a murders row of teams. Unfortunately for NC State and West Virginia for that matter, their September 15th contest was cancelled due to the hurricane that came through that area. It could have given more insight to the quality of both teams.

Dabo Swinney is getting his team where they need to be and they are coming off a 63-3 shellacking of Wake Forest. I expect the Tigers to roll once again and cover the 17.5 points at home.

Pick: Clemson -17.5

Mississippi State Bulldogs +6 at LSU Tigers

The LSU Tigers are a very good team that made a huge statement a week ago dominating the Georgia Bulldogs between the hedges a week ago. They were more physical, made plays on both sides of the ball and look like a team that could be a dark horse playoff team.

That said, this is the week to back Mississippi State. LSU has fallen off the week after big games this season. In Week 1 they beat Miami decisively but failed to cover the following week against SE Louisiana. After what seemed to be a statement win at the time against Auburn the Tigers failed to cover against Louisiana Tech.

I expect the Bulldogs to continue the trend this week. Mississippi State made plays and rebounded nicely against Auburn a week ago. I think LSU wins this game at home but I see a close, low scoring game. The under (44.5) is also very much in play here.

Pick: Mississippi State +6

Auburn Tigers -3.5 at Ole Miss Rebels

This season has not gone the way many expected for Auburn. They have lost three games already including back to back losses at Mississippi State and at home against Tennessee. I am going to admit that this may be the week the wheels fall off the car and Auburn just quits.

That said, I expect the Tigers to rebound in a big way. Auburn still has an incredibly talented defense that should give the Ole Miss passing game trouble. The Rebels have only seen one legit defense all season (Alabama) and they were held to a measly 7 points.

I expect the Auburn offense to get rolling and reestablish the rush attack against Ole Miss. I expect to reminded why many thought Auburn could be a problem in SEC this season. The Tigers roll on the road and cover the 3.5 and then some.

Pick: Auburn -3.5

Bonus Picks: Michigan/Michigan State  under 41, Temple -3.5, Utah State -15, Alabama minus whatever in the first half
