CFB DFS Week 2 Preview – Day Slate

Before the varsity games kick off Sunday, try a CFB DFS appetizer to wet your beak! As always, I focus on DraftKings targets each week here on Fake Pigskin. My goal is to identify three to four low-cost/reasonable floor targets as foundational pieces for all my lineups.

This way, you start by boosting your remaining price per player in the range to roster as many high floor/high upside guys who we all anticipate substantial statistical output from.

HERE ARE THE VEGAS ODDS (FAVORITES IN BOLD) FOR THE 12 GAMES INCLUDED IN THE SATURDAY AFTERNOON DK CONTEST:

For example, I am not going to come at you with hot suggestions like Jack Coan and Emory Jones. What I will do is point out that rostering the expensive QB duo will leave your average remaining price per player at $5,350. My objective each week will be to offer a reasonable path to affording the best players. Before one of the variants ruins everything, let’s dive into Week 2’s plan toward CFB DFS salvation!

Spielman at Nebraska

JD Spielman | WR | TCU $3,000

Of course, I’m going back to my contest minimum price (CMP) ways from last week. It wasn’t too long ago that this transfer was the standout leading receiver for Nebraska prior to the COVID-19 2020 season. As you may recall, the impact from the pandemic wreaked havoc all over college football. Each week, there was no telling who was able to practice, let alone actually play in a game. On top of COVID, coming to TCU as a transfer, 2020 was a bit of a lost year for Spielman.

Beyond him, the Horned Frog wide receiver corps still hasn’t filled the massive void left from Jalen Reagor’s departure to the NFL. Really, Taye Barber (also should be considered this week) is the only proven veteran target for quarterback Max Duggan. The 2021 season is the first real instance where there is enough stability week-to-week for Duggan to develop a rapport with others in the passing game. So far, one half of football for the starters against Duquesne isn’t going to indicate much. But, Spielman’s two catches for 26 yards including a 16 yard touchdown in the first half let’s us know he’s definitely in the mix with the starters. At this price in a game where the first team should see four full quarters of action, that’s all I need to know.

Demarkcus Bowman | RB | Florida $3,000

In a game where the Gators are gigantic favorites against the hapless Bulls of South Florida, all running backs from Gainesville should have solid value this week. This former 5-Star Clemson transfer is no exception. Currently serving as the team’s third tailback on the depth chart, Bowman came away with four carries for 20 yards in the opener last week. It’s also notable that he saw action in the first half with the game still in question.

Going back to Clemson, this Lakeland Florida native’s game breaking explosiveness has always been talked up. That rhetoric hasn’t changed during his brief period at Florida. All he needs is an extended opportunity to display this ability in a live college game. And, this weekend could be just that time. As a prime CMP candidate, Bowman is the type of player that could make your day in one play.

Garrett Wilson | WR | Ohio State $5,900

Heading into the opener at Minnesota last Thursday night, Wilson was appropriately priced in the 7k range. His 1A counter part receiver Chris Olave was inappropriately around the 6k pricing level. Inexplicably, the two have traded places in the Week 2 CFB DFS slate. In terms of production and upside, both Wilson and Olave are capable of putting in 100 yard, multiple score efforts every week regardless of the matchup. Both should be priced north of 7k in any slate. Take advantage of this discount while it lasts because Wilson has a legit shot at finishing as the top receiver this Saturday.

Fading Quarterback Chalk

The battle of the Carolinas has a relatively friendly Vegas projection for both offenses approaching 30 points Saturday. If Luke Doty is a full go, both him and ECU quarterback Holton Ahlers have a nice opportunity to provide value as paydown options at their position. Also, they both offer decent rushing stats upside.

Chalk I Can’t Live Without

Along with the entire offense, the Florida quarterback position is in a great spot to produce Saturday afternoon. However, for CFB DFS purposes, this is likely going to be a tricky situation to pay such high prices for the time being.

If that riskier play isn’t your flavor, I am happily paying up for either Max Duggan or C.J. Stroud at quarterback. I watched plenty of Oregon last week. Their defense was very average after star pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux left the game with an ankle injury. Even if he plays, he likely won’t be at full strength. And, this isn’t Fresno State at home. Playing in the Shoe for a Buckeye’s home opener after a season where fans weren’t allowed at the stadium? Yea. There’s a reason why the No. 12 ranked team in the country is being handed 14.5 points in Vegas. Gimmie Stroud and ALL the Buckeyes. I’ll also have Notre Dame running back Kyren Williams everywhere.

Good luck in the Week 2 day slate! Follow me on twitter @realBobbyAdcock compliments and insults are always welcomed.
