NFL Eliminator Challenge: Week 6

Welcome to Week Six of season seven of our NFL Eliminator Challenge series!  While Week Four was a tough one for us, Week Five was very successful.  We went 3-0 on the week and all three games were decided by more than 20 points.  If only every week could be this easy!  Read on and feel free to comment at the bottom or hit me up on twitter!

Step 1 – Avoid Division Matchups

Finally, our rules are starting to pay off.  Last week we saw some major upsets, one of the biggest being the winless Broncos defeating their division rivals, the LA Chargers.  We also saw the Seahawks defeat the defending NFC champion Rams as well as a struggling Steelers team take the Ravens into overtime.  I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, do yourself a favor and avoid the below division games:

  • Carolina at Tampa Bay
  • Cincinnati at Baltimore
  • San Francisco at Los Angeles Rams
  • Detroit at Green Bay

Step 2 – Avoid Marquee Matchups

Again, two of our three prime time games were highly enjoyable.  On Thursday we had a division matchup between the Rams and Seahawks that was decided by only a single point.  Then on Sunday night we saw another one of our major upsets as the Colts beat the high-powered Chiefs by only six points.  Unless you want to take a chance, I would still avoid the below marquee games:

  • New York Giants at New England
  • Pittsburgh at Los Angeles Chargers
  • Detroit at Green Bay

Step 3 – Avoid Picking Against Home Field Advantage

While home field advantage continues to be our weakest step this season, we did see one major upset last week.  The Chicago Bears, a team many thought possible to challenge for the Super Bowl this year, lost on the road to an Oakland Raiders team that was the laughing stock of the league only one month ago.  Be aware and avoid the below games where the favorite is the away team:

Step 4 – Make your pick!

  • Washington at Miami
  • Carolina at Tampa Bay
  • Seattle at Cleveland
  • Atlanta at Arizona
  • Dallas at New York Jets

My pick of the week is:

  • New England Patriots over the New York Giants

Yes, this may be a prime-time game, but the Patriots are a team we rarely have to worry about underperforming on the big screen.  If you take a look at the Giants injury report this week, combine that with the fact that the Patriots are playing at home and this should be an absolute blowout.

Other options I like this week:

  • Kansas City Chiefs over the Houston Texans

Obviously, this whole game depends on how healthy Mahomes is, but the reality is the Chiefs lost last week in a game they should have won.  This week they return home and this team is too good to drop two in a row, even with how good the Texans are playing right now.

  • Baltimore Ravens over the Cincinnati Bengals

New rule for this season: see who the Bengals and Dolphins are playing and pick against them for one of our picks.  There is a very good chance these two teams play each other week 16 with matching 0-14 records and until then we are going to take advantage for our series.

Overall Record = 10-5
