2019 may finally be the year of the shortstop! After many years of terrible positional depth and limited top end talent the position finally is among the strongest. Part of that is due to the decline of first base and second base. However, it also partly due to a wave of excited young players with hitting upside in the last few years. The other great thing about shortstop is that it has become a place where you can find pretty much any skill set. We have our speed guys, our power guys and even some who will hit for a decent average. No longer is this the position you dread to draft!
The top-12 feels especially strong, with all 12 being in contention for top-100 picks on most sites. The injury to Francisco Lindor has meant that Trea Turner currently stands out above the rest. However, he is closely followed by a group which contains the likes of Javier Baez, Manny Machado, Alex Bregman, Trevor Story and Lindor himself. Those six have somewhat distanced themselves. They reside in a tier that you are having to commit to in the first couple of rounds.
Following that six the position kind of comes in dribs and drabs. You have the speedster Adalberto Mondesi, and the young players with a little less shine on them than a couple of years ago, Carlos Correa, Corey Seager and Xander Bogaerts. Jean Segura and Gleybar Torres generally make up the consensus top-12. After that things get a little bit more questionable and it becomes a case of picking your poison, and being willing to sacrifice some stats to get others. There are still some solid names out there but they do not have the razz-ma-tazz of the top-12.
