NFL Eliminator Challenge: Week 8

Welcome to week eight of our NFL Eliminator Challenge series!  Last week, we reverted to our 2-1 ways, hitting on our pick of the week as usual and splitting our alternate picks.  For our pick of the week, the Colts were outright dominant against the Bills, but the defending Super Bowl Champion Eagles couldn’t hold onto their lead against the Panthers, ruining our chances at a 3-0 week.  Time for week eight as we near the half-way point of the season.  Read on and feel free to comment at the bottom or hit me up on Twitter!

Step 1 – Avoid Division Matchups

For once, there weren’t a ton of big division upsets last week.  The Rams easily defeated the 49ers. The Texans continued the Jaguars downward spiral, and the Redskins pulled out a close win over Dallas.  That being said, make sure one week doesn’t make you forget about the previous seven.  I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, do yourself a favor and avoid the below division games:

  • Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs
  • Washington Redskins at New York Giants
  • Cleveland Browns at Pittsburgh Steelers
  • San Francisco 49ers at Arizona Cardinals
  • New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills

Step 2 – Avoid Marquee Matchups

Talk about some snoozers on Thursday and Sunday night.  The Broncos beat the Cardinals by 35, followed by the Chiefs beating the Bengals by 35.  At least Monday brought us a close game, despite the Giants trying as hard as they could to lose throughout the night.  Unless you want to take a chance, I would avoid the below marquee games:

  • Miami Dolphins at Houston Texans
  • New Orleans Saints at Minnesota Vikings
  • New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills

Step 3 – Avoid Picking Against Home Field Advantage

When teams travel away from home, strange things happen.  Take a look at the game in London this past weekend, coming down to a decision to go for two, by a team that was squarely in the playoff hunt.  New England was also put on warning, as the Bears ended up one yard short of sending their game into overtime in Chicago.  While it wasn’t the strongest showing for home teams in week eight, the advantage is still there.  Be aware and avoid the below games where the favorite is the away team:

  • Philadelphia Eagles at Jacksonville Jaguars (London)
  • Baltimore Ravens at Carolina Panthers
  • Indianapolis Colts at Oakland Raiders

Step 4 – Make your pick!

My pick of the week is:

  • Chicago Bears over the New York Jets

Last week, the Vikings absolutely dominated the Jets in Minnesota, throwing everything they could at the Jet’s rookie signal caller.  This week, the Jets travel to Chicago, where a very good Bears defense is going to be looking to make a statement after dropping their last two games to other AFC East teams.  I don’t expect the AFC East to win three in a row against Chicago, and look for Mack to get back in the MVP conversation this week.

Other options I like this week:

  • Los Angeles Rams over the Green Bay Packers

I normally don’t like to pick against the Packers, because honestly, I don’t like to pick against Aaron Rodgers.  What he can do in a game is absolutely amazing, and he has used lesser teams to beat more talented opponents in the past.  That being said, I’m not sure if anyone is going to beat the Rams this season, and I don’t think the Packers stand a chance in this one.

  • Cincinnati Bengals over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Yes, the Bengals got embarrassed on national television last weekend, but that was prime time Andy Dalton.  For whatever reason, prime time Andy Dalton and regular Sunday 1pm Andy Dalton are two very different quarterbacks.  I expect the Bengals to rebound this weekend against a team that barely was able to beat the Browns last weekend.

Overall record: 16-5

Week 6 record: 2-1
