NFL Eliminator Challenge: Week 6

Welcome to Week 6 of our NFL Eliminator Challenge series!  Once again, we went 2-1 last week which seems to be our running trend, hitting on our pick of the week and splitting our alternate picks.  Pretty much whenever we pick with or against Minnesota, we lose, so it may be time to start avoiding that wildcard.  Read on and feel free to comment at the bottom or hit me up on twitter!

Step 1 – Avoid Division Matchups

Not to be a broken record, but these games continue to entertain and surprise.  The Browns were able to upset the Ravens in OT, the Lions handled the Packers due to some kicker struggles, and even the Cardinals got their first win of the season over their division foe from San Francisco.  I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, do yourself a favor and avoid the below division games:

  • Philadelphia Eagles at New York Giants
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Atlanta Falcons
  • Pittsburgh Steelers at Cincinnati Bengals

Step 2 – Avoid Marquee Matchups

While there weren’t any big upsets in the week five prime time games, don’t let one week make you forget of all the weeks prior.  Unless you want to take a chance, I would avoid the below marquee games:

  • Philadelphia Eagles at New York Giants
  • Kansas City Chiefs at New England Patriots
  • San Francisco 49ers at Green Bay Packers

Step 3 – Avoid Picking Against Home Field Advantage

There were eight games to kick off the Sunday slate at 1PM EST this past weekend.  Of those eight games, all eight of them were won by the home team, including the Bills upsetting the Titans, the Jets taking apart the Broncos, and the Steelers easily beating the Falcons.  Home field advantage is a real thing in the NFL, and this past weekend was a great example of it.  Be aware and avoid the below games where the favorite is the away team:

  • Chicago Bears at Miami Dolphins
  • Los Angeles Chargers at Cleveland Browns
  • Seattle Seahawks at Oakland Raiders (London)
*always avoid international games where there is no home team
  • Los Angeles Rams at Denver Broncos
  • Jacksonville Jaguars at Dallas Cowboys
  • Baltimore Ravens at Tennessee Titans

Step 4 – Make your pick!

My pick of the week is:

  • Houston Texans over the Buffalo Bills

While the Bills pulled off a big win at home last week, things won’t be so easy on the road against Houston this coming weekend.  Houston is starting to turn their season around after an 0-3 start and I don’t think they let Buffalo get in the way of their current winning streak.

Other options I like this week:

  • New York Jets over the Indianapolis Colts

I’m just as shocked as you are, but look what the Jets did last week against the Broncos.  This has not been a very impressive season for Luck and the Colts so far and I expect the Jets defense to throw a ton at Luck this week while the offense should be able to take advantage of a very bad Colts defense.  If the Jets can put up 34 on the Broncos, just think what they can do against the Colts.

  • Minnesota Vikings over the Arizona Cardinals

I know, I know, but come on.  The Vikings are playing at home against a one-win team with a rookie quarterback.  They can’t let us down again….right?…..right?….

Overall record: 11-4

Week 5 record: 2-1
