NFL Eliminator Challenge: Week 15

Welcome to Week Fifteen of our NFL Eliminator Challenge series.  We finally made it back to 3-0!  The Seahawks won in a very convincing fashion as our pick of the week, and both Tampa Bay and Tennessee held up their end of the bargain for a perfect week.  Let’s do it two weeks in a row!  Feel free to comment at the bottom or hit me up on twitter!

Step 1 – Avoid Division Matchups

With only three division games last week, we didn’t get too many fireworks.  Green Bay took care of Detroit at home and the Titans ran all over the Jaguars in Jacksonville.  We did get one nail biter in Cleveland, as the Ravens and Browns went back and forth in a Monday night thriller.  I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, do yourself a favor and avoid the below division games:

  • Los Angeles Chargers @ Las Vegas Raiders
  • Houston Texans @ Indianapolis Colts
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Atlanta Falcons
  • New England Patriots @ Miami Dolphins
  • Chicago Bears @ Minnesota Vikings
  • Pittsburgh Steelers @ Cincinnati Bengals

Step 2 – Avoid Marquee Matchups

While the Rams absolutely smoked the Patriots on Thursday night and the Bills fairly easily handled the Steelers on Sunday night, at least we had the Browns-Ravens game on Monday.  Only thing better than a prime time game is a division prime time game!  Unless you want to take a chance, I would avoid the below marquee games:

  • Los Angeles Chargers @ Las Vegas Raiders
  • Buffalo Bills @ Denver Broncos
  • Carolina Panthers @ Green Bay Packers
  • Cleveland Browns @ New York Giants
  • Pittsburgh Steelers @ Cincinnati Bengals

Step 3 – Avoid Picking Against Home Field Advantage

Out of 14 games on Sunday, only six were won by the home team.  However, we did see one major upset as the Philadelphia Eagles with a rookie quarterback beat the New Orleans Saints.  Yes, Brees wasn’t playing, but the way the Eagles have played recently, this was a major upset.  We will continue to keep an eye on this rule for 2020 but for now I’m still going to play it safe and avoid the below games where the favorite is the away team:

  • Buffalo Bills @ Denver Broncos
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Atlanta Falcons
  • Seattle Seahawks @ Washington Football Team
  • Kansas City Chiefs @ New Orleans Saints
  • San Francisco 49ers @ Dallas Cowboys
  • Pittsburgh Steelers @ Cincinnati Bengals

Step 4 – Make your pick!

My pick of the week is:

  • Los Angeles Rams over the New York Jets

We might start calling this pick, “Who’s playing the Jets?”  If the Patriots could only score three points against the Rams defense last week, will the Jets be able to even score three this week?  Let’s not pretend the Seattle defense that held them to three is a top notch defense anymore.  This one should get very ugly fast.

Other options I like this week:

  • Baltimore Ravens over the Jacksonville Jaguars

The Ravens are peaking at the right time, and the Jags are still hoping for the number one draft pick and Trevor Lawrence.  With this game in Baltimore and with how poorly the Jaguars played against the run last week, this one could be over quickly.

  • Tennessee Titans over the Detroit Lions

Talk about running teams.  The Detroit Lions have one of the worst run defenses in the NFL and they are about to play one of the hottest running backs in the NFL.  There is a chance Henry has his second straight 200+ yard game this week.

Last Week Record = 3-0

Season Record = 31-10
