NFL Eliminator Challenge: Week 8

Welcome to Week Eight of our NFL Eliminator Challenge series.  Last week we got back to perfection, finishing the week at 3-0.  The Bills took care of the Jets (even though I was expecting a much more convincing win), and both the Saints and Chargers took care of business.  Putting our faith in Herbert certainly came through.  Now let’s do it two weeks in a row! Feel free to comment at the bottom or hit me up on Twitter!

Step 1 – Avoid Division Matchups

The thrilling division matchups continue to come.  The Eagles only beat the Giants by one, the Browns only won by three with a last minute touchdown, and even the Saints beat the Panthers by just three points.  Moving on to upsets, how about the Washington Football Team beating “America’s Team” by a score of 25-3?  I know Andy Dalton isn’t great, but 25-3 against Washington?  Wow!  I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, do yourself a favor and avoid the below division games:

  • Atlanta Falcons @ Carolina Panthers
  • New England Patriots @ Buffalo Bills
  • Minnesota Vikings @ Green Bay Packers
  • Pittsburgh Steelers @ Baltimore Ravens
  • Los Angeles Chargers @ Denver Broncos
  • San Francisco 49ers @ Seattle Seahawks
  • Dallas Cowboys @ Philadelphia Eagles
Step 2 – Avoid Marquee Matchups

Week six may have been disappointing for prime time games, but Week Seven certainly didn’t let us down.  On Thursday, we got a division matchup between two mediocre teams, but we also got a game that was decided by a single point.  Then on Sunday night came the game of the week, where the Seahawks and Cardinals went into overtime for Arizona to pull off the upset.  While Monday night wasn’t exactly a thriller, two out of three isn’t too bad!  Unless you want to take a chance, I would avoid the below marquee games:

  • Atlanta Falcons @ Carolina Panthers
  • Dallas Cowboys @ Philadelphia Eagles
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ New York Giants
Step 3 – Avoid Picking Against Home Field Advantage

Last week, only six of 14 games were won by the home team, a trend we continue to see this season.  That being said, two big upsets (Washington and Arizona) were both won by underdogs playing at home.  We will continue to keep an eye on this rule for 2020 but for now I’m still going to play it safe and avoid the below games where the favorite is the away team:

  • Tennessee Titans @ Cincinnati Bengals
  • Indianapolis Colts @ Detroit Lions
  • Los Angeles Rams @ Miami Dolphins
  • Los Angeles Chargers @ Denver Broncos
Step 4 – Make your pick!

My pick of the week is:

  • Kansas City Chiefs over the New York Jets

This has to be the easiest pick we have had all season.  You arguably have the worst team in football traveling to play one of the best teams in football.  The game is in Kansas City, it isn’t a division game and it’s not in prime time.  If you haven’t used KC yet this season, slam down your pick now!

Other options I like this week:

  • New Orleans Saints over the Chicago Bears

With the above rules, we don’t have many options to go with here, so I’m going with the Saints even though they are on the road.  Chicago looked terrible Monday night and while the Saints weren’t dominant against Carolina, it was also a division matchup, which can sometimes be tricky.  I just don’t see Chicago matching the New Orleans offense this coming Sunday.

  • Tennessee Titans over the Cincinnati Bengals

Another road team here, but one that lost a very tough game last week.  Tennessee lost the battle of unbeatens against the Steelers, but I expect them to rebound in a big way against a struggling Bengals defense.

Last Week Record = 3-0

Season Record = 15-5
