MLB DFS: Targets for 8/9

Nationals Max Scherzer

We have a 14-game slate for MLB DFS tonight. Don’t forget, not included is the Coors Field game between the Rangers and Rockies which will start at 3:10 EST.

Max Scherzer (WAS vs. CLE)

Moneyline: -190

Over/Under: 7 1/2

FanDuel: $11,800/DraftKings: $12,900

Scherzer looks to be the “ace” to pay for tonight. If there’s a pitcher to slow down the Indians, Scherzer can be that guy. He comes into tonight with seven straight quality starts, and getting into the double digits with strike outs in three of those games.  Indians’ hitters have not had previous success against Scherzer, and if we want to split hairs, Scherzer has pitched better at home this season.

Kenta Maeda (LAD vs. PHI)

Moneyline: -200

Over/Under: 7 1/2

Fantasy just got a whole lot better thanks to Monkey Knife Fight. With fast-paced games like Rapid Fire and Either/Or, it’s never been easier to play fantasy and win. New to MKF? Get Exclusive $100 Deposit Match + Free $5 Game

FanDuel: $8,800/DraftKings: $9,700

Maeda and the Dodgers are a heavier favorite to win than the Nationals, with Maeda projected to have less runs allowed compared to Scherzer. If you want to pay up for hitters, Maeda is a solid pivot from Scherzer. The Phillies are in the bottom of the league in categories like ISO, slugging, BABIP, and wOBA, so giving up power and contact shouldn’t be an issue. With the likelihood of the win and chance at one strike out per inning, Maeda should make for great value.

Other pitchers to consider: Matt Moore (SF @ MIA), Marco Estrada (TOR vs. TB), and Tyrell Jenkins (ATL @ MIL).

James McCann (DET @ SEA)

FanDuel: $2,000/DraftKings: $3,000

At minimum salary on FanDuel, McCann can be your punt play target against Mariners’ southpaw, Wade LeBlanc. The Tigers could be a popular stack with all of the right-handed bats in their lineup.

Other catchers to consider: Welington Castillo (ARI @ NYM), Salvador Perez (KC vs. CWS), and Evan Gattis (HOU @ MIN).

First base

Freddie Freeman (ATL @ MIL)

FanDuel: $3,600/DraftKings: $5,200

With Wily Peralta taking Junior Guerra‘s spot in the rotation, Braves hitters can be targeted. In general, Peralta isn’t a good pitcher, but with left-handed bats having slightly more success, the Braves could be worth a stack tonight. Freeman, for the season against right-handed pitchers has an ISO of .236, .502 slugging percentage, and .354, and can be considered as a one-off play if you don’t want to stack the Braves.

Other first basemen to consider: Paul Goldschmidt (ARI @ NYM), Anthony Rizzo (CHC vs. LAA), and Eric Hosmer (KC vs. CWS).

Second base

Daniel Murphy (WAS vs. CLE)

FanDuel: $3,800/DraftKings: $5,100

Murphy has the platoon tonight against Indians’ pitcher, Trevor Bauer. Bauer hasn’t been pitching well lately and could be tiring here down the stretch. Murphy has been so dominant against right-handed pitchers this season, and is sporting a slugging percentage of .635, 1.038 OPS, .270 ISO, and .431 wOBA, against them. With the possibility of Altuve being a popular pick to pay up for at the position, Murphy makes for a nice target.

Other second basemen to consider: Jose Altuve (HOU @ MIN), Ian Kinsler (DET @ SEA), and Ryan Schimpf (SD @ PIT).

Third base

Josh Donaldson (TOR vs. TB)

FanDuel: $4,300/DraftKings: $4,400

Without Coors Field as an option in the main slate today, Donaldson against Drew Smyly is your target if you want to spend up. Smyly’s having a rough season overall, and pitching at Rogers Centre is no easy task. His splits are pretty wide, so Donaldson and other Blue Jays’ right-handed bats will be popular.

Other third basemen to consider: Kris Bryant (CHC vs. LAA – also OF eligible on DraftKings), Alex Bregman (HOU @ MIN), and Jonathan Villar (MIL vs. ATL).

Marcus Semien (OAK vs. BAL)

FanDuel: $3,200/DraftKings: $3,600

Semien and the A’s are facing new Orioles’ pitcher, Wade Miley. He’ll have the platoon against Miley, so there’s a chance Semien can bat first or second in the order, so keep an eye on that. For his career against southpaws, Semien has a .513 slugging percentage, .851 OPS, .215 ISO, and 134 wRC+.

Other shortstops to consider: Trea Turner (WAS vs. CLE – 2B & OF eligible on DraftKings), Brad Miller (TB @ TOR), and Jhonny Peralta (STL vs. CIN).

Stephen Piscotty (STL vs. CIN)

FanDuel: $3,400/DraftKings: $4,300

Although a small sample size, Piscotty has had much more success against left-handed pitchers. Tonight the Cardinals are at home and will be facing southpaw, Brandon Finnegan. Finnegan for his career against right-handed bats is giving up .436 slugging percentage, 1.74 HR/9, and 18.6% HR/FB , which lines up nicely for high scoring fantasy points night for Piscotty.

Travis Jankowski (SD @ PIT)

FanDuel: $3,500/DraftKings: $4,500

Jankowski comes into this game tonight against Pirates’ pitcher, Chad Kuhl, with a seven-game hitting streak. Amongst those games, four of them are multi-hit games with seven stolen bases. During his current hitting steak, Jankowski’s OBP is at .548, with a BABIP of .591, .556 slugging percentage, and .481 wOBA. His price is going up, but as long as he can get on base and steal some bases, he should be able to provide you with enough value.

Other outfielders to consider: Nelson Cruz (SEA vs. DET), Jose Bautista (TOR vs. TB), Mookie Betts (BOS vs. NYY), Ender Inciarte (ATL @ MIL), Lorenzo Cain (KC vs. CWS), J.D. Martinez (DET @ SEA), and Starling Marte (PIT vs. SD).
