Pre-Super Bowl 2015 NFL Mock Draft

The Super Bowl has yet to be played, so an NFL mock draft might seem premature, but for 30 NFL teams, it’s draft season. There are still Pro Days, workouts, and, of course, the Combine to play out, but it’s never too early to take a look at who might be taken where in the upcoming NFL Draft. Free agency will change the needs of teams, but I’ll play GM for every team and make selections based on the current rosters.

  1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Jameis Winston,QB: This is a seemingly weak overall quarterback class, but Winston has the tools to be a franchise passer. His off-field antics are worrisome, but his talent is undeniable. He may be the only NFL-ready QB in the draft.
  2. Tennessee Titans-Leonard Williams, DT: Many teams will likely have Williams as the top player on their board, and he makes sense here. The Titans get stronger on the front four and get the top defender in the draft.
  3. Jacksonville Jaguars-Dante Fowler,DE: The Jaguars could look to move down, but continuing to build the defensive line isn’t a bad move either. Fowler is a versatile pass rusher, who could develop into a three down player if he improves against the run.
  4. Oakland Raiders-Shane Ray, DE: The Raiders are a team who should look to trade back, but barring that, adding a pass rusher is an option. Ray might be the most talented pure pass rusher in the draft. Many will want a receiver here, but it’s too early for any of them.
  5. Washington Redskins-Vic Beasley, LB: Ryan Kerrigan is a monster, but they need another reliable pass rusher. Beasley is fast and relentless, and in a passing league, it never hurts to stock up on guys who can get after the quarterback.
  6. New York Jets-TJ Clemmings, OT: Fans are going to explode for passing on Marcus Mariota, but getting a potentially dominant LT for the future helps more immediately. Clemmings will rise up draft boards through the draft process.
  7. Chicago Bears-Randy Gregory, DE: Gregory is a risky pick, in that he’s immensely athletic and talented, but needs to greatly improve his strength and repertoire of moves. The Bears badly need help on defense though.
  8. Atlanta Falcons-Alvin Dupree, DE: The Falcons are in desperate need of pass rush help, and get the last of the top defensive ends available. They could possibly trade down and still get Dupree, but he has a wide array of moves, and is terrific at what he does.
  9. New York Giants-La’el Collins, OT: Eli Manning needs protection, and the Giants need to get a top offensive line prospect, even though they need defense too. Collins is big, aggressive, and versatile. Some have him as a guard, but he can play all over.
  10. St Louis Rams-Brandon Scherff, OT: Quarterback is certainly an option, but the Rams could give Sam Bradford one more shot, and if so, need to try and keep him healthy. Scherff is another versatile lineman who can play inside and out.
  11. Minnesota Vikings-Amari Cooper, WR: The Vikings need somebody for Teddy Bridgewater to throw to, and Cooper is the most well-rounded and talented receiver in the draft. If he falls this far, they run the podium at full speed.
  12. Cleveland Browns-DeVante Parker, WR: With Josh Gordon likely suspended for the season, the Browns have to get a pass catcher. Parker has terrific size and hands, and can go up and make plays, even when covered.
  13. New Orleans Saints-Marcus Peters, CB: Mariota would be tempting, but the Saints need to improve the defense. Peters is a smart corner who does an excellent job reading routes and jumping them. He has good size for the position.
  14. Miami Dolphins-Trae Waynes, CB: When playing in a division with the Patriots, there are never enough cornerbacks. Waynes has good height and instincts, and will battle it out with bigger receivers for position. He’s very thin, and could add some bulk.
  15. San Francisco 49ers-Danny Shelton, DT: Shelton is a mountain, and can clog the middle of the line and take up blockers, allowing the San Francisco pass rushers to work. He’s quicker than he looks and can make plays of his own.
  16. Houston Texans-Marcus Mariota, QB: The Texans are in a position where they can let Mariota sit and learn. The Oregon star has all the physical traits, but has to learn how to run an NFL offense and make NFL reads and throws.
  17. San Diego Chargers-Landon Collins, S: With several free agents in the secondary, the Chargers could look to add more talent there, and few are more talented than Collins. He’s fast, big, strong, and could go even higher than this.
  18. Kansas City Chiefs-Kevin White, WR: White is another big-bodied receiver with the ability to snatch passes out of the air over defenders. The Chiefs have got to get a playmaker on the outside, and White is the best on the board.
  19. Cleveland Browns-Jordan Phillips, DT: The Browns could stand to improve up front and Phillips is a big, but quick, defender capable of dominating in the run game. He’d infuse some much needed talent to the defensive line.
  20. Philadelphia Eagles-Eddie Goldman, DT: Cornerback is the obvious need, but in this scenario, the value isn’t there, so the Eagles do the next best thing and beef up the front line. Goldman is strong in both the run and passing games.
  21. Cincinnati Bengals-Shaq Thompson, LB: Thompson could fall a bit due to size concerns, but he’s certainly talented. The Bengals need pass rushers more, but adding a talented linebacker works here as well.
  22. Pittsburgh Steelers-PJ Williams, CB: The Steelers don’t often go after cornerbacks early in the draft, but they may have to. Williams is a versatile corner who has good size and has shown he can make plays on the biggest of stages.
  23. Detroit Lions-Malcolm Brown, DT: If the Lions are unable to re-sign Ndamukong Suh, they will look to target an interior defensive lineman early. Brown is big and quick, and though not the pass rush threat Suh is, he does a lot of things well.
  24. Arizona Cardinals-Hau’oli Kikaha, LB: This draft is flush with pass rushers, and the Cardinals have the choice of a couple of good ones here. Kikaha is a speed rusher with an ability to fight off blocks and get to the quarterback.
  25. Carolina Panthers-Ereck Flowers, OT: The Panthers are working on rebuilding their offensive line and Flowers is a good start. He’s a terrific run blocker, which is big for Carolina, and is getting better in the passing game.
  26. Baltimore Ravens-Jaelen Strong, WR: As great as Steve Smith is, he can’t play forever, and the Ravens could use a “pardon the wording” strong receiver to groom for his spot. Strong has natural talent and good size, and can get even better.
  27. Dallas Cowboys-Benardrick McKinney, LB: Sean Lee is perpetually injured, and the other options are free agents, so the Cowboys select McKinney, a freakish athlete that is a devastating tackler and potential enforcer on the defense.
  28. Denver Broncos-Maxx Williams, TE: By far the top tight end prospect in the draft, Williams could replace free agent Julius Thomas. He can line up anywhere and make every catch. Switching Thomas for Williams will even things out for Denver.
  29. Indianapolis Colts-Dorial Green-Beckham, WR: The Colts have several needs on both sides of the ball, including getting weapons for Andrew Luck. If DGB behaves himself, few players in the draft can have as much impact.
  30. Green Bay Packers-Quinten Rollins, CB: There was no bigger letdown against Seattle, aside from coaching, than in the secondary, who allowed Russell Wilson to come back. Rollins is a pure athlete and is only getting better with more work.
  31. New England Patriots-Devin Funchess, WR: The Patriots have eschewed drafting receivers early, but that offense would be scarier with a true #1 WR. Funchess is a big, fluid athlete who, despite some drops, can make a great offense better.
  32. Seattle Seahawks-Michael Bennett, DT: Creative havoc for opposing quarterbacks is something Seattle loves to do, so they get another pass rushing lineman. Bennett can get pressure up the middle, and jumps right into the rotation.
