MLB DFS: Targets for 4/10/18

Aaron Nola

It’s been a fun start to the season for baseball fans, and also for those of us who play MLB DFS. There has been daily weather concerns, with games many games already being postponed. Always be sure to keep an eye on possible postponements, and batting orders when they are announced.

Aaron Nola (PHI vs. CIN)

Moneyline: -210

Over/Under: 7 1/2

FanDuel: $8,500/DraftKings: $8,200

Nola’s first start of the season was cut short because he was pulled into the sixth inning after only throwing 68 pitches against the Braves. His last start against the Mets was fine, by allowing just two earned runs, but also gave up four walks. Nola’s at home tonight, facing a struggling Reds’ lineup. Only four teams have scored more runs than the Reds this season. As a team, many of their hitting stats are average, but they’re not taking advantage of scoring opportunities. Even though it’s early in the season, what Nola can take advantage of, is that this will be the Reds’ sixth straight game on the road. It’s a good spot for him to up his strikeouts, and cut down on his walks. Nola can be played on both FD or DK.

Jacob deGrom (NYM @ MIA)

Moneyline: -198

Over/Under: 8

FanDuel: $9,600/DraftKings: $12,400

deGrom has an extremely dominant matchup tonight, against the Marlins. The Marlins are scoring just 3.2 runs per game. deGrom has allowed just three runs (two earned) in his first two starts. The Mets have a lot of momentum going into tonight’s game, with a 6-game winning streak. The Marlins are struggling offensively. They have only hit three home runs this season, which ties them for second least in MLB. You can see how DK feels about deGrom’s start by his price tag. Dynamic pricing has him as their highest salary pitcher, and for good reason. It’ll be tough to fit deGrom into your lineups, but it’s surely worth the shot at having some exposure to him if you can find the right batters at great values.

Rhys Hoskins (PHI vs. CIN – Homer Bailey)

FanDuel: $5,000 (OF)/DraftKings: $5,400 (OF)

Into his second season in the bigs, Hoskins is posting really great numbers. Many will see just two home runs under his belt to start the season, but don’t let that stat fool you. For batters with at least 30 plate appearances, this is where he ranks amongst MLB hitters:

  • RBI – 5th
  • AVG – 1st
  • OBP – 2nd
  • SLG – 3rd
  • ISO – 5th
  • BABIP – 3rd
  • wRC+ – 3rd

On a slate where there looks to be high scoring games at Coors Field and Globe Life Park in Arlington, you can pivot off of those games and batters, and roster Hoskins and other Phillies hitters. The run total for this game is rather low, but this is assuming that Nola keeps the Reds’ bats quiet, and the Phillies are able to get him run support.

Tyler Austin (NYY @ BOS – Chris Sale)

FanDuel: $3,200 (1B)/DraftKings: $3,300 (1B)

If you’re looking to differentiate yourself, some exposure to Austin might just be the trick. Rostering a hitter against Chris Sale is not the easiest decision to come to terms with, but there are times when you can take a chance. With Greg Bird out, Austin has a chance to make his mark. He’ll have the platoon tonight against Sale. Austin’s splits favors the platoon immensely, with an OBP of .415, .659 slugging, and .318 ISO, against southpaws. Because this is a matchup against Sale, Austin’s salary on both sites may not seem low enough, but on a slate with a lot of pricier first base options, having some shares of Austin might not be a bad idea.

Matt Olson (OAK @ LAD – Hyun-Jin Ryu)

FanDuel: $3,800 (1B)/DraftKings: $4,100 (1B)

Olson bats from the left side, and Ryu is a left-handed pitcher. This isn’t ideal for most left-handed batters, but it could be worth a shot. Olson’s splits against LHPs aren’t great, but Ryu has reverse splits. LHBs have more success against Ryu than RHBs. Dodger Stadium is a little better hitting environment than Oakland. Ryu gives up 0.98 HR/9 to LHBs at home, versus 0.76 against RHBs at home. Olson and the A’s could be a sneaky team to stack tonight. Ryu pitched 3.2 innings in his only start this season, and gave up five walks. The A’s are ranked 12th in MLB in BB%, so if they’re patient at the plate, they could get to Ryu early in this game as well. Olson is a GPP play for me on both sites.
