DraftKings Week 9 Strategy Guide

Chiefs Alex Smith

This is the last big week of teams on a bye. That once again means less options to choose from, making things interesting to say the least. When there are less players to choose from on DraftKings there is usually less room for error. No pressure.

I have been on record saying these weeks with multiple teams on byes can be a bit tricky. Last week helped me illustrate how frustrating it can be to feel good about your picks and then watching them become bad. While Shady and Zeke helped bail me out a bit Cam Newton was once again in a great spot and was terrible. My other worst calls were doubting Deshaun Watson and Nuk Hopkins, and all the Chargers I endorsed. This is a tough business and like the 76ers say I will continue to trust the process.

Quarterback

Drew Brees $7,000-The Bucs have still been horrible on defense despite holding Cam Newton in check last week. I’ll pay up for Brees in this spot at home in a great matchup.

Dak Prescott $6,700-I would have liked Dak more here if he were forced to help cover for Zeke, but this still is a good play. I feel like this has the makings of a shootout. Both offenses have been rolling and the defenses are susceptible to the big play.

Alex Smith $6,500-That’s called a segway. If I like Dak for all the reasons I literally just mentioned then I like Alex Smith also. He has great weapons around him and he is facing a below average defense.

Jared Goff $5,500-The Giants have been okay thus far on defense but this week they suspended top DB Janoris Jenkins. Jared Goff has beat up on bad defenses so far this year and with Jenkins out that is very likely this week.

Jacoby Brissett $5,200-He was originally on my list because I thought Deshaun Watson would be blowing them out by halftime leading to garbage time points. Unfortunately Watson is now out for the year and this game should be competitive. He should be able to get some deep shots on this defense as Russell Wilson showed last week is open.

Tom Savage $4,600-He is and has been terrible, so why the endorsement? He is dirt cheap. In what should be a winnable game against the Colts, Savage be able to exceed value if he can muster a decent game.

Running Back

Kareem Hunt $8,600-Kareem Hunt has went from fantasy MVP to just a good running back. He gets back on track and into the end zone this week in the game I am all in on.

Mark Ingram $7,600-He and Alvin Kamara have been great since the departure of Adrian Peterson. This should be a game completely controlled by the Saints and that is why I am on Ingram as he should have ample carries.

Christian McCaffrey $6,500-He continues to be heavily involved in the pass game. We will see this week what post Kelvin Benjamin Panther’s offense looks like. I’m banking on at least five catches from Run CMC.

Chris Thompson $6,100-The Redskins are extremely banged up on offense missing Jordan Reed, Jamison Crowder, Robert Kelley and a few starters on the line. I expect to see some quick dump offs to Thompson as I feel that is all the time Cousins will have.

Adrian Peterson $5,600-AP will have another good matchup this week against the 49ers. He has had one great game and one bad game so far since joining the Cardinals. Without Palmer they should feed AP with as many carries as he can handle.

Orleans Darkwa $3,800-The Rams have struggled to contain the run game this year. It is obviously a gamble based on whether or not the volume will be there. If he gets the volume the value should be there.

Eddie Lacy $3,200-I have been burned by Eddie Lacy this year already and I assume many others have too. My hope is that others are not like me and forgiving. Pete Carroll and Darrell Bevell both proclaimed the need to get Lacy the bulk this week. I will listen and take a small risk at his price.

Wide Receiver

DeAndre Hopkins $9,200-He is the target monster for his team and I expect players to be off of him this week with Savage throwing the ball.

Michael Thomas $7,200-The Bucs have been downright terrible against Wide Receivers this year. With Thomas being relatively quiet I think this is the perfect spot for him to have a big week.

Tyreek Hill $6,700-Like I mentioned earlier I think there will be fantasy points to be had in this game. The Cowboys struggle against wide outs and anytime Tyreek Hill gets the ball he can score.

Dez Bryant $6,400-Maybe I should have just made this a Chiefs/Cowboys write up. I do love Dez here as well. We saw Amari Cooper become great again versus the Chiefs and despite being a solid defense they are allowing big plays.

Demaryius Thomas $6,000-He is the best bet for this team to move the ball. The Eagles still are not great at shutting down the pass game. If Brock Osweiler can be competent Demaryius Thomas will have to make plays.

Desean Jackson $5,500-I fully expect the Saints to be in control and the Bucs will be forced to chase in the pass game. Desean Jackson and his big play ability is the play here.

Devin Funchess $5,400-The Panther’s new number one receiver should be in store for a lion’s share of targets versus the Falcons.

T.Y. Hilton $4,900-The best wide out for the Colts has to play better as he has only five catches over his last three games. He has two monster games under his belt this year and they were both good matchups for him. He has another good one and needs to come through.

Nelson Agholor $4,800-The most consistent receiving option for the Eagles outside of Zach Ertz has been Nelson Agholor. Even though the Eagles acquired Jay Ajayi, they should still look for Agholor early and often to move the sticks.

Sammy Watkins $4,200-No Janoris Jenkins could mean another big day for Sammy. He has faced a brutal stretch of tough corners and hopefully will take this opportunity and deliver.

Aldrick Robinson $4,000-The rule is play whoever the number two receiver is against Patrick Peterson. This week that is Aldrick Robinson.

Ertz

Tight End

Zach Ertz $6,800-He is great, and continues to be consistent. Ertz is also facing one of the worst defenses against tight ends who were torched last week by Travis Kelce.

Evan Engram $5,600-The still depleted receiving corps for the Giants does get Sterling Shepard back this week yet I think Engram is still there best pass catcher. It is not the greatest of matchups so I do not anticipate the highest ownership of him.

Jimmy Graham $5,000-He scored twice last week rebounding after a bad week prior to the Giants. He has another plus matchup here and it appears the Seahawks are committed to getting him targets.

Jack Doyle $4,300-While I expect a big T.Y. Hilton game, Jack Doyle has become Brissett’s favorite target lately. My feel is Doyle has a good enough floor that at his price if he does not find the end zone he can still be worth the price.

Vernon Davis $4,100-Vernon Davis will get the start with Jordan Reed out again. As I prefaced earlier, the only passes I think Cousins can get out are short quick ones. That means Vernon Davis should get plenty of targets as well as Thompson.

Jonnu Smith $3,400-Delanie Walker looks like he could miss the game and Corey Davis may be eased into game action. That could make rookie Jonnu Smith a good play this week. The talent is there and he just needs to show it.

Tyler Higbee $2,800-He is facing the best matchup for a tight end this week. He has the skills yet does not give you week to week stats which is why he is so cheap.

Defense and Special Teams

Seahawks $3,500-The Redskins are depleted and they should have no issue getting to Kirk Cousins.

Saints $3,400-I keep using the Saints defense and they keep cashing. They are legit and Jameis is still playing hurt and definitely can force some interceptions.

Colts $2,000-The cheapest defense available. Tom Savage at quarterback may be all you need to know to be fine with this selection. He is a great bet to make mistakes, maybe one goes for a pick six.
