NBA DFS: Targets for 10/18

Damian Lillard - by: Sam Forencich/Getty Images

Basketball season is finally here, and so is NBA DFS! There’s a good sized 11-game slate for us to sift through. My next few articles will focus more on safer targets, while I get to see how games play out. You can use most of these as cash game plays for now. The Celtics and Rockets are both on back-to-backs, but with this being just the second night of the season, it shouldn’t be of concern.

We also have a DFS account on Twitter, so be sure to give it a follow!

The targets:

Damian Lillard (POR @ PHO)

FanDuel: $8,800 (PG)

DraftKings: $10,400 (PG)

It’s already a steep price over on DK, but we can make it work. The Suns play at a fast pace, which will give the Trail Blazers and Lillard more opportunities at scoring fantasy points. What makes Lillard the most appealing target of the night for me is that C.J. McCollum is serving his one-game suspension tonight, leaving Lillard on the court to carry the team. There’s potential of him getting fouled more than usual because of the increased workload. Last season Lillard ranked 7th in the NBA with a .895 free throw percentage. It’ll be hard not to roster Lillard, and should be one of your most highest-owned players of the night.

Jimmy Butler (MIN @ SA)

FanDuel: $8,700 (SF)

DraftKings: $8,100 (SG)

Butler got out of the turmoil in Chicago, and has a chance to contribute to a Timberwolves team that showed promising moments last season.  At first glance, the matchup with the Spurs doesn’t seem ideal, but they’ll be without Kawhi Leonard – at least for this game. Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns were one and two last season in terms of minutes played, with Gorgui Dieng rounding out the top 20. It’s safe to assume that Butler will see a good amount of minutes as well and will probably be glanced over by most tonight.

Jeremy Lamb (CHA @ DET)

FanDuel: $3,500 (SF)

DraftKings: $5,700 (SG/SF)

The Hornets open the season short staffed, with most notably, Nicolas Batum out for the time being. We seen Lamb’s usage from last season with their regular starters out, and he gives those of us in DFS the flexibility we need as long as his price is right. Don’t worry about whether he gets the start or not – his usage rate last season was almost identical between starting and coming off the bench. He’s a sure target on FD, but not so much on DK with a $2,200 discrepancy. Plug and play him on FD, but play with caution on DK.

LaMarcus Aldridge (SA vs. MIN)

FanDuel: $7,000 (PF)

DraftKings: $7,300 (PF/C)

The time to play LMA is when Leonard is out, or at least that’s been the thought. He put up good numbers in the preseason, which will hopefully translate into the regular season too. There’s potential for him to have a better season with the Spurs, with or without Leonard. History has a tendency of repeating itself, and for now, it’s best to take advantage of a Leonard-less team with a relatively lower salary for LMA, to open the season. Depending on how you’re constructing your lineup, he could be a cash or GPP play.

DeMarcus Cousins (NO @ MEM)

FanDuel: $10,200 (C)

DraftKings: $10,000 (PF/C)

So, the Anthony Davis saga has already begun. Safe to say that if Davis doesn’t play (although I think he will after dealing with an illness), pen Boogie into your lineups. When it comes to Cousins and Davis, it’s not necessarily a situation where you need to pick one if the other is out. They do produce well together, so I think Boogie can be in your lineups if you can fit him in. As far as the matchup goes, it shouldn’t be a worry. Gasol has an ankle issue and there’s no reason for the Grizzlies to push him at the start of the season. Boogie’s power forward and center eligibility on DK may also give you more wiggle room.

Targets to also take into consideration:

John Wall (WAS vs. PHI)

FanDuel: $10,000 (PG)

DraftKings: $9,800 (PG)

Devin Booker (PHO vs. POR)

FanDuel: $6,800 (SG)

DraftKings: $7,000 (SG)

Josh Richardson (MIA @ ORL)

FanDuel: $5,100 (SG)

DraftKings: $4,900 (SG/SF)

Aaron Gordon (ORL vs. MIA)

FanDuel: $6,300 (PF)

DraftKings: $6,900 (SF/PF)

Jusuf Nurkic (POR @ PHO)

FanDuel: $7,500 (C)

DraftKings: $7,500 (C)

Thank you for reading, and good luck with your picks!
