Fantasy Football: Week 1 Standard Scoring Rankings

Kelvin Benjamin

Welcome everyone to the 2017 NFL season! Here you will find weekly rankings for standard scoring leagues.

 Week 1 Rankings Standard

Top Plays: Tom Brady leads the way, as I expect him to do for most of the season. Odds are, we are going to see a shootout between the Seahawks and Packers, and both QBs will finish in the top 5. That being said, I think Wilson will prevail as a higher scoring player because Green Bay’s defense is terrible against the pass.

Surprise Players: There are two players that stood out to me when making this list, for different reasons. Making the list, is Brian Hoyer at 15. Carolina was a bottom five defense against the pass last year and with Kyle Shanahan coming to town, I expect lots of passing in this game. Not making the list was Kirk Cousins. Cousins and the first-string offense seemed to be missing something this preseason (I know, I know) and I believe it will still take them some time to get comfortable after losing their top two wide receivers.

Top Plays: …. I don’t really need to tell anyone that Bell and David Johnson are the top plays, basically week to week. But I will talk about Todd Gurley, who makes it into my top 5 this week. The Rams get to face the Andrew Luck-less Colts this week and I fully expect the Rams defense to destroy Tolzien and the terrible Colts offensive line. This will give the Rams a chance to maintain possession of the ball by giving it to Gurley repeatedly.

Notable Omission: A couple names that didn’t make the cut, that may surprise people, are two rookies. Fournette does not make the list for me this week as he is dealing with an injury and a heavy workload could present the chance of re-injury. Christian McCaffrey also does not make the list because I still believe Jonathan Stewart is the main back here, with CMC being more of the passing down back. CMC probably makes my list if we were looking at PPR.

Top Plays: Antonio Brown is far and away the best play of the week for me this week. Facing a Brown’s secondary that just released arguably their best defender, I expect Antonio Brown to hit over 100 yards easily, along with scoring a couple of touchdowns. As I mentioned previously, both Baldwin and Jordy make the top 5 in what will be a very high scoring game.

Elephant in the room: No, it’s not a weight joke, but I would be surprised to find Kelvin Benjamin on anyone else’s top 15 players of the week list, much less a top 12 WR. But alas, there he is, and he sits there because the guy who throws him the ball REALLY REALLY likes him. I expect Benjamin to get a huge percentage of red zone targets from Cam this year.

The top 3: Boy are these guys hard to put in order. I went with Olsen at the top because he is a target hog when Carolina needs to march down the field. With the recent injury to Julian Edelman, look for Gronk to get the majority of the targets that would have went Edelman’s way.

The rest: Ranking tight ends is difficult because there are the top handful of players, and then there are players that probably will not be game changers for anyone in their fantasy leagues. It also seems like half of the league’s starting tight ends are dealing with injury.
