Fantastic Football: How to break your Dynasty League Part 3

Raiders Amari Cooper

So.. a quick recap:

At the end of the startup draft I had made four trades and achieved my goal of acquiring some promising young assets in Ezekiel Elliott, Amari Cooper and Michael Thomas. I also ended the draft with three 2017 rookie 1st and 2nd round picks. The goal from here would be to use the start of the season to evaluate where I stand for the 2016 season and to win as many games as possible. As the season plays out I can decide what direction I want to take my team.

This particular league has a really cool rule that I feel should be used more often to prevent tanking:

The winner of the league championship would receive pick 1.07 in the 2017 rookie draft and the winner of the toilet bowl would be awarded a pick at the end of the first round. With these extra picks as an added incentives, owners have little reason to lose on purpose.

So the goal here would be for me to toe the line of being able to maintain the best team possible for the 2016 season while also keeping in mind that 2017 would be the year that I would target for making my push for a championship. Also, keep in mind that I now owned two other team’s 2017 picks so I wanted them to lose as many games as possible.

I made seven more trades during the season to work towards my goal,   some I won and some I lost but the goal was the same in all of the trades that I made.

1 – I give Darren Sproles for Jay Ajayi

2 – I give Terrance West and Kevin White for Tevin Coleman, Jack Doyle and a 2017 2nd

3 – I give Amari Cooper for Derrick Henry and a 2017 1st

4 – I give Drew Brees and Jonathan Stewart for Cody Kessler and Dorial Green-Beckham

5 – I give Derrick Henry for Russell Wilson

6 – I give Tevin Coleman and a 2017 3rd for Cameron Meridith and a 2017 1st

7 – I give Eric Ebron for Tyler Eifert

All of these trades were made when either the player I gave was “hot” or the player I received was “cold” or injured. I gave up player value in 3 of the trades to add to my collection of rookie picks. I now had 5 of the 2017 1st round picks and 4 of the seconds but I wasn’t done yet.

Unfortunatley I missed the fantasy playoffs by one game but I did earn a first round bye and cruised through week 15 and 16 big wins fueled by Russel Wilson’s late season resurgence and big games by Elliot and Ajayi. In fact, had I made the big dance,my scores of 143 and 169 in those weeks would have beat any possible opposition I would have faced.

Woulda..coulda..shoulda. The one game I missed the playoffs by ended up costing me the championship so I would have to be happy with my toilet bowl trophy and my extra 1st round pick. The good news is that I was fortunate to have acquired the picks of some of the worst teams in the league.

Two more predraft trades netted me enough capital to acquire basically anybody in the league that I wanted:

1 – I give Davante Adams and Jalen Richard for 1.04 and 2.04

2 – I give 2.09 and my 2018 1st(At this point I felt like it was safe to assume that my 2018 pick would be late) for 2.03 and 2.07

I now owned 1.01/1.02/1.05/1.08/1.10/1.13/2.01/2.02/2.03/2.04/2.05/2.06/2.07

Next I would just need to sit back and wait.Remember what I said about how rookie picks can only gain value leading up to the draft?I all would need to do now is sit back and wait for the rookie fever to set in and for the offers to start to roll in..and predictably the did:

1 – I give Kessler/Green-Beckham/1.08/1.10 and my 2018 2/3/4/5 for Odell Beckham and Malcom Mitchell

2 – I give 1.02 for T.Y. Hilton and 2018 1st

3 – I give 1.13 for Marvin Jones

My team was starting to really take shape here..

4 – I give 1.01 for 1.03 and 3.04 (This one I screwed up on big time..I was sure my target, McCaffrey would be there at 1.03 so I took whatever I could get to move back. McCaffrey went 1.02)

5 – I give Jack Doyle and 3.04 for 2.10/3.01

6 – I give 2018 1st(the one I got with Hilton) for Tevin Coleman

I used the rest of the picks..I had several offers but felt good about my depth at this point so decided to add rookies that I could stash on taxi squad if I needed to.

Here is what my team looks like now.

Starters in projected week 1 starters in bold:

QB:Russell Wilson/Savage/Kaepernick

RB:Elliot/Ajayi/Coleman/Riddick/McFadden/Kamara/Jammal Williams/Barber/Turbin/Zenner

WR:OBJ/Hilton/Thomas/Marvin Jones/Merideth/Corey Davis/Ginn/Mitchell/Lockett/Kearse/Chester Rogers/Godwin/Josh Reynolds/Curtis Samual/Ardarius Stewart/Carlos Hendersons

TE:Eifert/Njoku/Devalve/Higbee

Now..will this team win the championship in 2017?Who knows, but I think that it is fair to say that it has as good of a chance as anybody. As always, the goal is to make the playoffs and I feel confident that I can at least do that.

Thank you for reading about my journey and I hope that you were entertained and possibly even learned something.I had a heck of a lot of fun using this method and I think that you could too if you give it a shot.
