Target these RBs if you draft Ezekiel Elliott

Cowboys Ezekiel Elliott

The Dallas Cowboys Ezekiel Elliott has been suspended for six games for violating the NFL personal conduct policy. He is expected to appeal the suspension. It feels like he will likely get that reduced based upon the the precedent the NFL has set. That said, there will be a need to find someone to fill in while Elliott is suspended.

The obvious answer is Darren McFadden who should be the primary replacement for Elliott. If you draft both McFadden and Elliott you can lock up the Cowboys backfield and a RB1. However the cost of doing so, especially at six games is immense.

Currently McFadden is coming off the board as the end of the 10th round. It has already jumped three full rounds since Friday. He has gone as high as the middle of the 5th in one draft.

It feels like he will be drafted in the 6th/7th round range on average when ADP settles. I assume he comes off the board around Tevin Coleman, Derrick Henry and Doug Martin. That would likely be too early for me. The question becomes, who should you target later in the draft?

Terrance West | Baltimore Ravens | 8.04

Last season Terrance West showed flashes of being able to carry the rock in Baltimore. He split time with other ball carriers in an offense that leaned pass early and often. Still he had 774 yards and five TDs. This year its West and Danny Woodhead splitting duties. Greg Roman is in town to help out the offense. The same Greg Roman that had the 49ers and Bill among the most run heavy teams in the league.

West will likely be a round or more cheaper than McFadden in upcoming drafts. There will be an opportunity for West to be a guy you can still use when Elliott returns. McFadden becomes a high-end handcuff at best the rest of the way.

Jacquizz Rodgers | Tampa Bay Buccaneers | 9.04

Jacquizz Rodgers shoulder the load for two stretches a season ago. The first stretch, he rushed for 324 yards and a score over a 3 game period. The second stretch at the end of the season he had 138 yards and a score over two games.

This season, Rodgers should be the primary ball carrier for the first three games of the season with Doug Martin suspended. He can provide you a reliable option for three weeks. There will be someone on the waiver wire you can add to fill the other three weeks if Rodgers doesn’t keep the job when Martin returns. For a 8th or 10th round pick you can’t hate that.

Robert Kelley | Washington Redskin | 9.05

Robert Kelley or “Fat Rob” as many call him may be one of my favorite late round RBs period. Like West, there is a good chance that you have someone to play with Elliott after he returns. Samaje Perine is in town and many are quick to anoint him “the guy”. While i’m a big Perine guy in dynasty, in redraft i’m not as optimistic. Worst case scenario, if Perine steals the show that will likely be a midseason move that allows Kelley to remain fantasy relevant for six weeks.
