Working the Wire: Melvin Gordon out, Kenneth Farrow in!
Survive and advance, thats the mission come playoff time. As the injuries start to pile up including to Melvin Gordon who was injured this week, fantasy owners have to be able to adapt on the fly. Who should you be adding this week via the waiver wire? Let’s take a look.
Kenneth Farrow | RB | San Diego Chargers
(4% owned on Yahoo)
In Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers running back Melvin Gordon was injured trying to recover a fumble and was taken off of the field on a cart. He is currently week to week with a hip injury and many of his fantasy owners are in panic. A name you should look towards is the same name the Chargers are going to lean on, Kenneth Farrow. He had 16 carries for 55 yards in a relief appearance for Gordon. Farrow also caught 6 balls for 23 yards. This game was out of hand when he took over with the ground game finding it hard to gain traction. I’d expect a much better effort this week against the Oakland Raiders with a full week to tailor the game plan to his skill set. The Chargers get the Cleveland Browns in two weeks where Farrow could have a field day. All Gordon owners should be adding Farrow and those who need RB help could look his way as well.
Bilal Powell | RB | New York Jets
(46% owned on Yahoo)
Matt Forte left early in the first quarter of their game against the 49ers and did not return. He is dealing with a knee injury and is currently day-to-day but I’d expect him to miss some time if not the rest of the season. The New York Jets are a mess and aren’t likely to rush him back. That said Bilal Powell can be a legit contributor down the stretch especially in PPR formats. He had 145 rushing yards and two touchdowns in Sundays comeback win against the 49ers. He also caught five passes for 34 yards. With games coming against the Dolphins, Patriots, and Bills there should plenty of opportunities for Powell to help you win a fantasy championship.
Ty Montgomery | RB | Green Bay Packers
(37% owned on Yahoo)
The Ty Montgomery experience is apparently back in full effect after carrying the ball nine times for 41 yards and a score. He also caught three passes for 45 yards. Mike McCarthy said Ty Montgomery is a running back now, adding “he hasn’t gone to a receiver meeting in months.” With games coming against the Bears, Vikings, and Lions Montgomery can be a factor down the stretch.
Justin Forsett | RB | Denver Broncos
(20% owned on Yahoo)
It was pretty clear Justin Forsett was the Broncos lead back was on Sunday getting nine carries with Devontae Booker only garnering 5 carries. Forsett also displayed his ability as a pass catcher, hauling in three passes for 18 yards. This work continued despite fumbling his first carry. In the coming weeks Dever faces the Patriots who are allowing the 5th most passing yards to opposing running backs, the Chiefs who have allowed 90 yards or more in four of the last five weeks coming into Week 14, and the Raiders who are allowing the fifth most fantasy points to opposing running backs. Oakland had been gashed for 396 yards and five touchdowns heading into Week 14.
Alshon Jeffery | WR | Chicago Bears
(69% owned on Yahoo)
Owned in 69% of Yahoo leagues (Nice!), Alshon Jeffery is a must add if he is somehow available. He is returning from suspension to face a Packer secondary that has been improving but is not a group to fear by any means. Matt Barkley has looked serviceable since getting the starting gig and should be able to find Jeffery down the stretch.
Taylor Gabriel | WR | Atlanta Falcons
(48% owned on Yahoo)
Taylor Gabriel has been a monster as of late including scoring six touchdowns in the last six weeks. The Falcons find ways to get Gabriel involved both via the pass and on the ground. With Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanu both severely banged up, Gabriel is becoming more important. With games coming against the 49ers, Panthers and Saints there should be plenty of chances for Gabriel to go off.
Robby Anderson | WR | New York Jets
(2% owned on Yahoo)
As long as Bryce Petty is under center for the New York Jets it looks like Robby Anderson is going to be a thing. After getting four catches for 61 yards and a score against the Colts two weeks ago, Anderson caught six ball for 99 yards. He has been target an astounding 23 times over the last two weeks. If you need help at the WR spot he can be a guy that helps you down the stretch.
Dontrelle Inman | WR | San Diego Chargers
(23% owned on Yahoo)
Dontrelle Inman is vaulting himself into someone fantasy owners can rely on especially on this Chargers team that needs to throw early and often. He is averaging six targets per game over the last three weeks and has produced with those looks finding the end zone in all three games. The yardage totals have fluctuated but Inman has six catches in two of his last three games. With the Chargers playing the Raiders and Browns over the next two weeks I’d expect the production to continue and for Inman to be a reliable weapon down the stretch.
