College Football Picks Against the Spread: Week 6, 2016
WERE BACK!!!! Week 5 College Football Picks Against the Spread was a great bounce back spot for the column. We went 4-1 and honestly if not for College kickers it would have been a 5-0 week. Lets build on that success by finding more winners in Week 6. This week features some compelling action including the Red River Rivalry and a SEC clash down in Fayetteville. Lets go 4-1 again this week or go 5-0!
Texas Longhorns +11 at Oklahoma Sooners
The Red River Rivalry (try to say that three times fast) is one of my favorite games to watch every year. This game always brings out the best in both teams no matter how they had been playing to that point. The backdrop of the Texas State Fair only adds to the environment. It was in this spot one season ago with the Longhorn Football program in shambles that Coach Charlie Strong was able to get his team together and get a win over a very good Oklahoma team. This game features two offenses that have explosive ability and two defense that have been gashed by opposing offenses. This game screams shootout with an over/under of 73. I expect both offenses to push the ball down the field and score a ton of points. The Longhorns should be able to keep up with the Sooners enough to keep this game inside double digits. It will take a late score for Oklahoma to win this game. Take the Longhorns plus all those points and enjoy the ride.
Pick: Texas +11
Texas A&M -7 vs Tennessee Volunteers
2016 has been the year of the Volunteer. They have found ways to pull out games in consecutive weeks. Last week was an all timer with Josh Dobbs throwing a game winning hail mary after Georgia took the lead in the final seconds on the arm of Jacob Eason. This crazy win followed an insane comeback against bitter rivals Florida in which the Volunteers were down 21-3 in the second half. Before that is was another impressive second half against Virginia Tech that sealed their victory. The streak started with a crazy win against Appalachian State. The streak is coming to an end this week. Tennessee is heading to Kyle Field to take on a Aggie team that is ready to make a leap. Coach Kevin Sumlin is 5-9 in the last three season against AP top 25 teams which makes some uneasy about A&M in this spot but not me. Their defense is crazy good with Myles Garrett back to lineup opposite Daeshon Hall. I expect Dobbs to become very familiar with the two rush ends. I expect Trevor Knight to lead the offense up and down the field. A&M rolls in this spot and cover the 7 and then some.
Pick: Texas A&M -7
Arkansas Razorbacks +14 + vs Alabama Crimson Tide
Bret Bielema is built for games like this. Arkansas welcomes the number one team in the country into their house for a massive SEC clash. The Tide have been impressive at times this season with freshman Jalen Hurts showing poise beyond his years. However this will be a big test for the young quarterback in Fayetteville. The Hogs have looked good thus far and went head to head with A&M despite what the final score looks like. Quarterback Austin Allen has looked good this season even with the run game not providing consistent support. We saw the Crimson Tide defense struggle against the pass against Ole Miss. I think Arkansas can do enough in this spot to keep it inside two touchdowns.
Pick: Arkansas +14
Washington State Cougars +7 at Stanford Cardinal
I love, love, love the Washington State Cougars this week down on The Farm. Luke Falk and company take their dynamic passing attack to face a Cardinal secondary that is in shambles. Their top two cornerbacks will miss another week due to injury. It was very obvious last week how much of a downgrade their secondary took with Jake Browning carving them up and Husky wideouts running free all over the field. The best news for Wazzu is they found a legit run game last week against Oregon. I expect to see much of the same this week, although maybe not to the same level, it should be close. The Stanford offense doesn’t provide the balance of previous seasons despite the talent of Christian McCaffrey. Stanford also has a below average home field advantage. Take Wazzu plus the points here and look to have a chance at the outright win.
Ohio State Buckeyes -29 vs Indiana Hoosiers
Here we go again with the Buckeyes being a massive favorite. They are 4-0 this season ATS including as a 27.5, 28, and 39 point favorite. J.T. Barrett has looked great and has this offense rolling but the thing that I like more is their defense. Ohio State may have the best secondary in the CFB led by Malik Hooker. Nick Bosa has the pass rush rolling and creates havoc in opponents backfields. The Hooisers come into this game after getting a huge win in overtime against Michigan State. They have some pieces on both sides of the ball not enough to contend with OSU. I expect the Buckeyes to win big this week and cover the 29 point spread with ease.
Pick: Ohio State -29
