MLB DFS: Targets for 9/2

Carrasco had a monster 2015 and will be looking to back that up with another superb season

MLB DFS targets has a full slate of games, just minus the Giants and Cubs day game. Also, September baseball can be tricky with rosters expanding so make sure to do your due diligence and put in some extra time into looking at lineups and statistics for players you aren’t familiar with. Just because a player is cheap, it doesn’t make them a “value” play.

Pitchers

Carlos Carrasco (CLE vs. MIA)

Moneyline: -235

Over/Under: 8

FanDuel: $10,400/DraftKings: $10,700

The Indians jumped up from -210 to -235 as the favorite overnight, which feels like Carrasco will be the most popular pitcher of the night. The Marlins are fighting for a Wild Card spot, but the possibility Marcell Ozuna being out really downgrades the Marlins’ lineup. In Carrasco’s last five starts, he has at least eight strikeouts and pitched into the seventh in four of them.

Julio Urias (LAD vs. SDP)

Moneyline: -200

Over/Under: 7 1/2

FanDuel: $8,400/DraftKings: $9,600

The Padres just got swept by the Braves, and now they’re back on the west coast, facing the Dodgers for this weekend series in Los Angeles. The Padres strikeout the second most as a team with a 25.6% K-rate, and Urias has 10 K/9 for the season. The Padres are in the bottom three in the league in OBP, slugging, and wOBA, so Urias should be able to keep their bats in check tonight.

Other pitchers to consider: Danny Duffy (KC vs. DET), Jameson Taillon (PIT vs. MIL), and David Price (BOS @ OAK).

Catchers

Welington Castillo (ARI @ COL)

FanDuel: $3,700/DraftKings: $5,200

Castillo’s price on FanDuel makes him a must play, as the Diamondbacks are playing at Coors Field against Rockies’ lefty, Jorge De La Rosa. He’s been swinging a hotter back for a couple weeks now, and we hope Coors treats the DBacks better than they did the Dodgers. Castillo will have the platoon tonight, and for his career against southpaws his OBP is .360, slugging .501, .209 ISO and .371 wOBA. At the very least, pencil him in!

Other catchers to consider: Evan Gattis (HOU @ TEX), Gary Sanchez (NYY @ BAL), and Jett Bandy (LAA @ SEA).

First base

Freddie Freeman (ATL @ PHI)

FanDuel: $3,800/DraftKings: $5,500

Freeman’s coming into this game with an eight-game hitting streak, with hits in 19 of his last 20 games, while getting RBIs in 13 of these games and nine home runs. The Braves have been putting up more runs on the board as of late, and are looking to continue that against Jeremy Hellickson at Citizens bank Park. Helickson has trouble with keeping the ball in the park, which is why I really like Freeman tonight for his price on FanDuel.

Other first basemen to consider: Chris Davis (BAL vs. NYY), Josh Bell (PIT vs. MIL), and Brandon Moss (STL @ CIN-also OF on DraftKings).

Second base

Daniel Murphy (WAS @ NYM)

FanDuel: $3,500/DraftKings: $4,100

Murphy loves to bat against his former team, and I wouldn’t be afraid of rostering him tonight, even if it’s against Noah Syndergaard. His stats against the Mets, just this season is as follows:

  • HR: 7
  • RBI: 21
  • OBP: .446
  • SLG: .886
  • OPS: 1.331
  • BABIP: .385

Other second basemen to consider: Brian Dozier (MIN vs. CWS), and Matt Carpenter (STL @ CIN-also 3B on DraftKings).

Third base

Nolan Arenado (COL vs. ARI)

FanDuel: $4,400/DraftKings: $5,600

Arenado, at home, against a left-handed pitcher; done.

Other third basemen to consider: Trevor Plouffe (MIN vs. CWS), Maikel Franco (PHI vs. ATL), and Jefry Marte (LAA @ SEA-also 1B on DraftKings).

Indians Francisco Lindor

Shortstop

Francisco Lindor (CLE vs. MIA)

FanDuel: $3,600/DraftKings: $4,900

Lindor is a player who gives you solid numbers from the middle infield position with a decent amount of power. Tonight, he’ll face Marlins’ right-hander, Andrew Cashner. Lindor’s splits are fairly similar against both handedness of pitchers, and Cashner isn’t good against either handednes of batters. This season in away games, Cashner’s allowing 2.14 HR/9 to left-handed bats , which gives Lindor and others a better chance at hitting the long ball.

Other shortstops to consider: Marcus Semien (OAK vs. BOS), and Brad Miller (TB vs. TOR-also 1B on DraftKings).

Outfield

Nomar Mazara (TEX vs. HOU)

FanDuel: $3,100/DraftKings: $4,000

Mazara’s been leading off lately, and it’s good to see him get those extra at-bats. His matchup tonight against Doug Fister is a favorable one. Fister has struggled in his last few starts, and has given up at least four runs in three of his last four starts. Left-handed bats hit Fister much better, and this could be a good opportunity for Mazara to take advantage of Fister if he’s having another tough outing.

Yasmany Tomas (ARI @ COL)

FanDuel: $3,700/DraftKings: $4,900

Tomas’ offense has really improved since mid-June, and this weekend series at Coors Field can help to pad his stats. You’ll want the platoon with Tomas as well and he’s been putting up great splits against southpaws this season. So far he slugging .637, with an OPS of 1.009, .333 ISO, .416 wOBA, and 157 wRC+.

Other outfielders to consider: A.J. Pollock (ARI @ COL), Carlos Gonzalez (COL vs. ARI), David Dahl (COL vs. ARI), Enrique Hernandez (LAD vs. SD), Mike Trout (LAA @ SEA), and Nelson Cruz (SEA vs. LAA).
