MLB DFS: Targets for 8/29

Jose

MLB DFS Targets is back with a packed 13-game slate. There are many pitchers and hitters to choose from with Coors Field in play, as well as other hitter-friendly matchups!

Pitchers

Jose Fernandez (MIA @ NYM)

Moneyline: -155

Over/Under: 7

FanDuel: $11,000/DraftKings: $12,700

Fernandez is the highest priced pitcher on both sites, so it’ll be a challenge to fit him in with many high-priced hitters to choose from. This game has the lowest game total at seven, and with the Mets starting Rafael Montero, the runs should be coming from the Marlins’ bats. This season, the Mets are striking out 22.0% of the time, which is seventh most in MLB. Strikeouts are what you want and Fernandez delivers with 12.89 K/9, which is the highest in MLB, and second highest in strikeouts after Max Scherzer.

Matt Boyd (DET vs. CWS)

Moneyline: -185

Over/Under: 10

FanDuel: $6,600/DraftKings: $6,700

If you’re looking to roster Fernandez, Jake Arrieta, and other higher priced pitchers, you’ll need to pair them with a low salary pitcher on DraftKings. Boyd would be my target as a second pitcher. Boyd is coming in to this game with three straight quality starts, and his strikeouts are increasing each time out. The White Sox offense has struggled at times, as well as their staring pitcher for tonight, James Shields.

Other pitchers to consider: Tanner Roark (WAS @ PHI), Rick Porcello (BOS vs. TB), and Jake Arrieta (CHC vs. PIT).

Catcher

Gary Sanchez (NYY @ KC)

FanDuel: $4,000/DraftKings: $4,700

Sanchez has been swinging a hot bat for two weeks, so why stop now? The Yankees will be at Kauffman Stadium and facing Royals’ righty, Dillon Gee. Sanchez hasn’t had many major league at-bats but he currently has reverse-splits against right handers: 1.029 slugging, 1.549 OPS, .559 ISO, .468 BABIP, and 309 wRC+.

Other catchers to consider: Yasmani Grandal (LAD @ COL), Evan Gattis (HOU vs. OAK), and Victor Martinez (DET vs. CWS – 1B on DraftKings).

First base

Mike Napoli (CLE vs. MIN)

FanDuel: $3,400/DraftKings: $4,200

Napoli’s resurgence in power has given us something to think about when constructing lineups because of his price, relative to others in this position where you want power.  The Twins are sending southpaw, Hector Santiago, to the mound and he hasn’t pitched well since being traded from the Angels. With the platoon, Napoli should provide you with the fantasy points you need for his discounted price.

Other first basemen to consider: Chris Davis (BAL vs. TOR), Edwin Encarnacion (TOR @ BAL), and Miguel Cabrera (DET vs. CWS).

Matt Carpenter is a top-5 third baseman and extra-base machine. (Billy Hurst-USA TODAY Sports)

Second base

Matt Carpenter (STL @ MIL)

FanDuel: $4,000/DraftKings: $5,000 (also 3B on DraftKings)

Carpenter is a stronger hitter this season with the platoon, and we have that tonight against Zach Davies. It’ll be tough to pay up for him on both sites, but Carpenter is one of the more consistent hitters and rarely puts up a zero for fantasy points. While Davies doesn’t give up many home runs, Carpenter can still hurt you with his bat with extra base hits and clutch hitting to drive in runs.

Other second basemen to consider: Brian Dozier (MIN @ CLE), Jonathan Schoop (BAL vs. TOR), and Ian Kinsler (DET vs. CWS).

Third base

Josh Donaldson (TOR @ BAL)

FanDuel: $4,400/DraftKings: $5,200

Donaldson’s coming off of a three-home run game and may not be highly owned tonight. The Blue Jays will be in Baltimore and facing southpaw, Wade Miley. Miley’s another pitcher who has struggled since being traded, which doesn’t bode well against a righty-heavy Blue Jays lineup. Donaldson is another bat to pay up for if you can, but probably more of a GPP play tonight.

Other third basemen to consider: Jose Ramirez (CLE vs. MIN), Justin Turner (LAD @ COL), and Martin Prado (MIA @ NYM).

Shortstop

Corey Seager (LAD @ COL)

FanDuel: $4,400/DraftKings: $5,500

Seager is my favorite Dodgers’ bat tonight at Coors Field. It’s a small sample size, but BVP is on Seager’s side, who has hit Jon Gray very well. In just eight at-bats, Seager has collected five hits – one of which was a home run. He should see an extra at-bat or two, with this game being at Coors Field, which will help with making/exceeding his value.

Other shortstops to consider: Troy Tulowitzki (TOR @ BAL), Francisco Lindor (CLE vs. MIN), and Tim Anderson (CWS @ DET).

Outfield

David Dahl (COL vs. LAD)

FanDuel: $3,900/DraftKings: $4,800

The Rockies are back at home tonight after cooling off on the road. While Charlie Blackmon and Carlos Gonzalez are targets at the position, Dahl should be strongly considered. In just 32 games against southpaws, Dahl’s slugging .578, .945 OPS and .255 ISO. He has a hard hit percentage of 35.6% and 50.7% medium contact. Kenta Maeda has had decent starts this season in Colorado, but the chances of him leaving this game relatively unscathed aren’t favorable, especially with the run total increasing overnight to 11.

J.D. Martinez (DET vs. CWS)

FanDuel: $3,700/DraftKings: $5,100

Detroit bats should be a popular stack tonight against Shields. Since coming back from the DL, Martinez has already hit 6 home runs and scored 18 runs, with 13 RBIs. During this time, he also slugging .670, with an ISO of .277, .430 OBP, and .463 wOBA. This season, Shields has been bad against either handedness, but against right-handed bats he’s allow 2.29 HR/9, .573 slugging, and .391 wOBA.

Other outfielders to consider: Bryce Harper (WAS @ PHI), Jose Bautista (TOR @ BAL), George Springer (HOU vs. OAK), Mookie Betts (BOS vs. TB), Joc Pederson (LAD @ COL), Trea Turner (WAS @ PHI – 2B on DraftKings), Christian Yelich (MIA @ NYM), and Cameron Maybin (DET vs CWS).
