MLB DFS: Targets for 8/16

Can Verlander recover some of his past glories in 2016?

It’s a full slate of games for MLB DFS tonight, with a Coors Field game! Also of note: the Brewers and Cubs are playing a double header today, so be sure to keep an eye out for their lineups for the second game.

Pitchers

Justin Verlander (DET vs. KC)

Moneyline: -140

Over/Under: 7

FanDuel: $10,000/DraftKings: $12,900

Verlander’s priced up again on DraftKings, but more managable on FanDuel. He’s pitching deep enough into games lately, with currently six quality starts in a row. There’s also high strike out upside for Verlander, at 9.54 K/9 this season. The Royals don’t walk much, which means they’re swinging the bat a lot but not aren’t doing much with it when they do make contact. Overnight, the moneyline moved in favor of the Tigers from -130 to -140, with the run total dropping half a run, to seven.

Corey Kluber (CLE vs. CWS)

Moneyline: -179

Over/Under: 7 1/2

FanDuel: $10,700/DraftKings: $11,400

Kluber’s been pitching well this season, and looks to continue it with his start tonight against the White Sox. He had a dominant start against them back in may at U.S. Cellular, so the park shift to his home park will be a nice advantage. With the White Sox being in the middle or lower in the league when it comes to offensive categories, Kluber should be able to handle their bats, as he has a 25.2% K-rate, 1.01 WHIP, and .266 BABIP.

Other pitchers to consider: Kenta Maeda (LAD @ PHI), Blake Snell (TB vs. SD), and Danny Duffy (KC @ DET).

Catchers

Yasmani Grandal (LAD @ PHI)

FanDuel: $3,200/DraftKings: $4,600

Grandal looks like he’s healthy again and his recent offensive production shows it. In addition to having a great game against Vincent Velasquez during their last meeting, Grandal’s numbers since July 26th are pretty impressive. Since then, he has a .432 ISO, .750 slugging percentage, .479 wOBA, and 208 wRC+.

Other catchers to consider: Wilson Ramos (WAS @ COL), Jett Bandy (LAA vs. SEA), and Gary Sanchez (NYY vs. TOR).

First base

Edwin Encarnacion (TOR @ NYY)

FanDuel: $4,200/DraftKings: $4,700

This target is boom or bust. Encarnacion is able to hit right-handed pitching just fine, and Michael Pineda is hittable. Pineda’s K-rate this season against right-handed bats is at 25.6%, but he’s also giving up a slugging percentage of .485, .338 wOBA, 1.69 HR/9. The temperature should be in the mid-80’s at the start of the game, and we know the Blue Jays can hit baseballs out of the park.

Other first basemen to consider: Anthony Rizzo (CHC vs. MIL), and David Ortiz (BOS @ BAL).

Second base

Daniel Murphy (WAS @ COL)

FanDuel: $4,400/DraftKings: $5,600

Murphy’s price is hard to give in to, but the numbers don’t lie. Opposing pitcher, Chad Bettis, has struggled with both handedness of batters this season, while Murphy has had the upper hand against right-handed pitchers. Against them for the season, Murphy is slugging .635, with an OPS of 1.034, .274 ISO, and .428 wOBA. With this game being at Coors Field, these numbers have the potential of getting better while hitting third in the order.

Other second basemen to consider: Jose Altuve (HOU vs. STL), DJ LeMahieu (COL vs. WAS), and Devon Travis (TOR @ NYY).

Nolan Arenado (COL vs. WAS)

FanDuel: $4,200/DraftKings: $5,500

Another target from the Coors Field game, Arenado is a target that doesn’t need convincing. His price is more favorable on FanDuel, but his upside is beneficial on any site against lefty, Gio Gonzalez tonight.

Other third basemen to consider: Adrian Beltre (TEX vs. OAK), Kris Bryant (CHC vs. MIL – also OF eligible on DraftKings), and Jefry Marte (LAA vs. SEA).

Shortstop

Brad Miller (TB vs. SD)

FanDuel: $3,800/DraftKings: $4,900

Miller keeps hitting, and his power surge has been a pleasant surprise. Miller and the Rays are facing Padres right-hander, Edwin Jackson. Jackson hasn’t pitched regularly in the majors since 2014. Miller will have the platoon, which is where his power comes from. This season against right-handers, he’s sporting a .534 slugging percentage,  .857 OPS,  and .268 ISO.

Other shortstops to consider: Corey Seager (LAD @ PHI), Carlos Correa (HOU vs. STL), and Trea Turner (WAS @ COL – 2nd base and outfield eligible on DraftKings).

Outfield

Mark Trumbo (BAL vs. BOS)

FanDuel: $3,700/DraftKings: $4,400

The Orioles are at home tonight and facing southpaw, Eduardo Rodriguez. Trumbo’s been hitting more home runs than projected and isn’t showing signs of slowing down. He’s able to hit either handedness of pitcher, which makes him dangerous. Rodriguez hasn’t pitched the entirety of this season, but so far to right-handed bats he’s giving up a wOBA of .358, .521 slugging percentage, and 2.17 HR/9.

George Springer (HOU vs. STL)

FanDuel: $3,800/DraftKings: $4,200

Springer and the Astros will be going up against Cardinals’ left-hander, Jaime Garcia. The Astros could be a team to stack tonight with all of their right-handed bats. The platoon is definitely what you want against Garcia, and you can target Springer for one of your outfield positions. Garcia has been shaky at times this season and this could be one of those games. For the season, Garica is allowing a .393 slugging percentage, 0.99 HR/9, and 3.31 BB/9.

Other outfielders to consider: Charlie Blackmon (COL vs. WAS), Mookie Betts (BOS @ BAL), Khris Davis (OAK @ TEX), Carlos Beltran (TEX vs. OAK), Max Kepler (MIN @ ATL), and Christian Yelich (MIA @ CIN).
