2016 ROOKIE IDP (DT/DE) RANKINGS

sheldon rankins

As training camp has officially gone underway and draft season is well underway, here is one last update for IDP DL Rookies to help you own your draft and feel better going into the season.  There’s a handful that’ll contribute right away but majority are either depth pieces or taxi squad stashes for 2017 or later in the year that you’d want to activate.  I’m digging the Defensive Tackles in this draft class, yes a bunch of them are no better than early down linemen but they’ll still be useful in DT required leagues and then there’s a few questionable DE’s whether or not their seasons in college can translate to the NFL regardless though, that’s what fantasy is all about.

  1. DEFOREST BUCKNER (SF) will be worth that 2nd round pick in rookie drafts, will contribute right away and should be a lock for at least 5 sacks
  2. NOAH SPENCE (TBB) remember I said he’ll lead all rookies in sacks, he will and it’ll be at 9!
  3. JOEY BOSA (SDC) hasn’t signed a contract yet, a little worried because he needs to be practicing with the squad – once he hits the field though, he’s going to rack up tackles in bunches
  4. CHRIS JONES (KCC) should be battling Bailey for a starting spot because i don’t see Howard/Poe losing their job but even if he doesn’t beat out Bailey, he’ll carve up a role future is bright for Jones
  5. ROBERT NKEMDICHE (ARI) Robert is going to eat opposing RB’s and QB’s, should find himself in the backfield more often than not
  6. SHELDON RANKINS (NOS) strong DT target in DT required leagues, will have every chance to contribute early and often because NOS needs help on that line after losing Kikaha.
  7. JONATHAN BULLARD (CHI) with continued development in pass rushing skills, Bullard should have no problem contributing against the run – Tuitt type IDP profile
  8. CHARLES TAPPER (DAL) no Lawrence, no Gregory, Mayowa on PUP, Maliek on PUP – if that doesn’t paint a clear picture for Tapper – not really sure what will, the opportunity is right there for him to take advantage of
  9. MATT JUDON (BAL) he’s going to develop into one of the Ravens best pass rushers, not really much in front of him neither – good stash
  10. RONALD BLAIR (SF) solid run stopper, unsure how SF will utilize him though as he’ll be pegged on the depth chart but should see snaps here and there because I believe SF will shuffle their DL often to switch it up
  11. BRONSON KAUFUSI (BAL) should carve up a role in passing situations (at the very least) because you’re not going to be comfortable with Jernigan/Guy being your mains rushing the passer.  Solid dynasty value though as he has a shot to be a staple at the DE/DL2 spot (Top 30).
  12. JARRAN REED (SEA) love Reed, has a shot to be an every down player in SEA and will create chaos in the interior, I can definitely see Reed put up DT1 numbers or Top 15 DT numbers over the season, will be one of the x-factors on this front line.
  13. VERNON BUTLER (CAR) Butler is a beast but is behind 2 solid DT’s in Star and Kawann so his snaps will be limited early on barring an injury.  Sooner or later though Panthers will find a way to get Butler on the field; especially in passing situations.  Butler’s upside is DT1, even more if CAR can’t resign Short.
  14. YANNICK NGAKOUE (JAC) being slept on right now, great value in drafts – Jaguars need all the pass rushers they can get and Yannick can bring that.
  15. HASSAN RIDGEWAY (IND) Anderson is back on the PUP, Jones is out for the first 4 games and now Ridgeway will carry a bigger role in his rookie season but he should be able to handle it.  Ridgeway is sorta underrated as he can rush the passer and stop the run, will bring much needed presence of that for the Colts.
  16. KENNY CLARK (GBP) Packers desperately need an interior pass rushing presence, Clark provides that and will contribute early and often.  Clark is a solid target in DT required leagues if you miss out on Reed/Butler/Rankins should fit right into a DT2 type role for your team
  17. ADAM GOTSIS (DEN) got some big shoes to fill with the departure of Malik but think he’ll be alright, can mirror Wolfe’s IDP profile.
  18. JIHAD WARD (OAK) Ward is a true taxi squad stash right now, will eventually become OAK’s starting DT as he continues to develop.
  19. CARL NASSIB (CLE) Browns will shuffle their DL rotation to replace Bryant’s lost but Nassib is also a little raw, will his production carry over or was it a fluke?
  20. JAVON HARGRAVE (PIT) will be battling McCullers for the DT spot but should have no problem carving out a role, stout & aggressive player who fits the bill of a Steeler!
  21. MALIEK COLLINS (DAL) brings athleticism and both run defense and pass rushing to the Cowboys defense as he’ll compliment Thornton and Crawford very well.  Collins has good value right now as he’s on the PUP so he’s being forgotten but definitely a target in DT leagues.
  22. ALEX MCCALISTER (PHI) hearing he’s getting pushed around in camp, needs to get stronger but if not there’s the OLB in the future as he could be better off there with his build otherwise he’s going to get pushed around – a lot.
  23. STEPHEN WEATHERLY (MIN) will be battling for the last DE spot on the roster throughout camp, has the tools to succeed and he’s a former OLB turned DE in Vikings scheme.  Keep him on your radar when it’s time to stash rookies on your taxi squad
  24. A’SHAWN ROBINSON (DET) can become a poor mans Damon Harrison, 2-down DT eating up tackles
  25. AUSTIN JOHNSON (TEN) will be backing up Woods at the very least, brings some power to the line to help stop the run and disrupt the interior.  Only got value in DT leagues as your depth, I want to see if his tackle rate can carry over into the NFL, he could be lucky and get half of what his rate was which should land him around 40 tackles.
