MLB DFS: Targets for 7/8
It’s the last MLB DFS article until baseball returns from the All-Star break. There’s a lot of pitching to choose from, as well as high-priced bats on this full, 15-game slate.
Chris Sale (CWS vs. ATL)
FanDuel: $11,000/DraftKings: $13,500
Sale looks like the obvious target tonight, but even more so because the Braves game was delayed last night, into extra innings. The Braves are dead last in the league in ISO and slugging percentage, so getting hit hard shouldn’t be a concern for Sale. If the game gets blown out, Sale could still pitch deep into the game with the All-Star break coming up.
Cole Hamels (TEX vs. MIN)
Over/Under: 9 1/2
FanDuel: $9,500/DraftKings: $9,800
Hamels is quietly having a nice season and he’s one of my favorites with a price under $10,000, on a night where there is so much top-tier pitching to choose from. He’s been pitching well if you take into consideration that he’s now pitching in the AL with his home park being a hitter’s park when the temperatures rise. The Twins strike out over 22% of the time, with their team offense being less than league-average.
James McCann (DET @ TOR)
FanDuel: $2,000/DraftKings: $2,700
With the high-priced pichers and hitters that you want to roster, James McCann (not to be mistaken for Brian McCann) is the catcher you want. The game is at Rogers Centre, and McCann will have the platoon against J.A. Happ which is what you want when targeting McCann.
Edwin Encarnacion (TOR vs. DET)
FanDuel: $4,700/DraftKings: $5,400
Encarnacion and company are facing Mike Pelfrey. Pelfrey isn’t particularly better against either handedness, so stack up the Blue Jays!
Ben Zobrist (CHC @ PIT)
FanDuel: $4,000/DraftKings: $4,600
The Pirates are sending Francisco Liriano to the mound, who is struggling this season. Normally with switch-hitters, you want the platoon with them hitting from the left side of the plate. Zobrist is a really good hitter but most of his splits from the right side of the plate are slightly better.
LHP vs. RHP (career):
OBP: .370 vs. .352
SLG: .456 vs. .424
OPS: .827 vs. .776
ISO: .165 vs. .168
BABIP: .332 vs. .276
wOBA: .360 vs. .341
Todd Frazier (CWS vs. ATL)
FanDuel: $3,700/DraftKings: $3,800
Frazier has serious power, so not having the platoon advantage against Matt Wisler isn’t a concern. Wisler struggles a bit more when pitching on the road, and has given up an OBP of .339, .509 slugging percentage, and .359 wOBA for his career in away games.
Carlos Correa (HOU vs. OAK)
FanDuel: $2,900/DraftKings: $3,900
Correa and Corey Seager‘s price has dropped on FanDuel, which made it hard for me to choose between the two. Correa’s batting at home, which is a friendlier hitter’s park, against Daniel Mengden. He only has five starts on the season and has had decent starts. Because of that, I think Astros’ batters will be lower owned and can be nice targets for a stack.
Mookie Betts (BOS vs. TB)
FanDuel: $4,100/DraftKings: $5,200
The Red Sox are facing Chris Archer at home tonight. Although Archer is able to strike out batters, he gives up a ton of runs. With Betts being a part of the most productive offense in baseball, rostering against Archer shouldn’t be feared. Either handedness is hitting him hard, and Archer is giving up 1.79 HR/9 to right-handed bats.
Carlos Gonzalez (COL vs. PHI)
FanDuel: $4,600/DraftKings: $5,300
Bats at Coors will be popular again, with Vincent Velasquez on the mound. You can target both right and left-handed bats against him, making a Rockies stack even more desirable. Gonzalez a top target for the position, especially since he’ll have the platoon.
