MLB DFS: Targets for 7/1
MLB DFS Targets is back! We have 13 games for tonight’s slate. Not included are early games between the Indians and Blue Jays, and Reds and Nationals.
Johnny Cueto (SF @ ARI)
Over/Under: 8 1/2
FanDuel: $10,700/DraftKings: $12,100
Cueto had an excellent start in Arizona in May and he’s in a position to do well again. He’s pitched at least six innings in his starts since May 7th, and while his strikeouts do fluctuate, the Diamondbacks as a team are striking out 22.2% of the time.
Julio Teheran (ATL vs. MIA)
Over/Under: 7 1/2
FanDuel: $8,900/DraftKings: $11,700
Teheran has been terrific as of late, although his record doesn’t show it. In comparison to last season, Teheran has been striking out more batters per nine innings, while giving up less walks, and home runs. He’s the second highest priced pitcher after Cueto, on DraftKings, which makes him a more appealing play on FanDuel.
Evan Gattis (HOU vs. CWS)
FanDuel: $3,000/DraftKings: $4,400
Gattis and the Astros are facing Miguel Gonzalez at home. Gonzalez’s splits for the season are fairly similar between left-handed and right-handed bats. With that being said, Gattis has hit six home runs against both handedness of pitcher, which makes him a target at the position, especially on FanDuel for his price.
James McCann (DET @ TB)
FanDuel: $2,500/DraftKings: $3,100
McCann is usually an under-the-radar-target and might be with this game being at Tropicana Field. Facing Drew Smyly, McCann will have the platoon. For his career against southpaws, McCann a .532 slugging percentage, .867 OPS, .241 ISO, and .368 wOBA. Smyly has been struggling as of late and even with this game being in a pitcher’s park, I think the Tigers’ bats will be popular tonight.
David Ortiz (BOS vs. LAA)
FanDuel: $4,300/DraftKings: $5,500
The Red Sox as a team have come back down to Earth a bit, but this is an opportunity for them to come back into our favor. They are facing the Angels at home tonight against Jhoulys Chacin. He hasn’t done particularly well this season and a lot of the Red Sox bats are in play, including Ortiz. He’s having a monster offensive year with an OPS of 1.103, slugging .672, with a wOBA of .451.
Brandon Belt (SF @ ARI)
FanDuel: $4,200/DraftKings: $5,100
Belt is priced similarly to Ortiz, so rostering him on either site will depend on your perspective of how these games will shake out. He’s had a couple of big games against the A’s and that can definitely carryover into tonight’s game against Shelby Miller. In a hitter’s park with the platoon, Belt can be a strong target for your consideration.
Matt Carpenter (STL vs. MIL)
FanDuel: $4,400/DraftKings: $5,400
There’s not much to say about Carpenter because we know what he’s capable of doing at the plate. He’s batting leadoff with the platoon, has pop in his bat, and he’s pesky at the plate. The game being in St. Louis is not favorable for opposing starting pitchers, which will be Matt Garza for this game.
Brian Dozier (MIN vs. TEX)
FanDuel: $3,100/DraftKings: $4,900
A better play on FanDuel, Dozier’s bat has been coming back to life. He’s hit five home runs in his last six games, wit multi-hit games in seven of his last 11 games. If you believe in streaks, Dozier may be the target for you against Rangers’ starter, Martin Perez.
Adrian Beltre (TEX @ MIN)
FanDuel: $3,700/DraftKings: $4,300
Beltre is a hitter who rarely puts up a zero in the fantasy points column, and for that, he’s a favorite target of mine. His price has jumped up a bit on both sites, but his consistency warrants it. Beltre’s carrying a nine-game hitting streak, with 11 runs and 10 RBIs during the streak.
Nick Castellanos (DET @ TB)
FanDuel: $3,400/DraftKings: $4,500
As mentioned earlier, Detroit bats will be a popular choice and that includes Castellanos for me. More of a play on FanDuel tonight, he is always in consideration when he has the platoon. For his career against southpaws, Castellanos has a .798 OPS, .465 slugging percentage, and .342 wOBA.
Brandon Crawford (SF @ ARI)
FanDuel: $3,400/DraftKings: $4,700
Crawford has been really turning his season around during the last few games and as mentioned with Belt, the offense should continue in this game. With hits in eight out of the last nine games, Crawford is making the most of his opportunities by driving in 12 runs during this span.
Marcus Semien (OAK vs. PIT)
FanDuel: $3,300/DraftKings: $4,600
Semien has strung together several good offensive games in a row and will look to continuing that against Pirates’ starter, Jeff Locke. Locke has had a couple of good starts but taking him out of his home stadium can be an advantage for the A’s. If there’s a time to target Semien, tonight is it, as he has been hitting second in the batting order against left-handed pitchers.
Carlos Gonzalez (COL @ LAD)
FanDuel: $3,800/DraftKings: $3,400
Left-handed bats, and right-handed bats too, will be a popular stack against Dodgers’ starter, Bud Norris. With Kershaw on the DL and Norris coming over in a trade, the Rockies have a chance to capitalize offensively, even if it’s not in Coors Field, with their bats being priced down on DraftKings.
Khris Davis (OAK vs. PIT)
FanDuel: $3,800/DraftKings: $4,700
Davis has been a more consistent hitter for the last few games and currently has a five-game hitting streak. Davis’ power potential is well known, and this should make for a really good matchup for him with the platoon.
Mark Trumbo (BAL @ SEA)
FanDuel: $3,600/DraftKings: $4,500
Trumbo has been hot this season and a pitcher’s park isn’t going to hold him back. The Orioles are at Safeco, with Wade LeBlanc on the mound for the Mariners. For the season against southpaws, Trumbo has an ISO of .377, OPS of .831, and slugging of .584.
Other outfielders to consider: Ryan Braun (MIL @ STL), Justin Upton (DET @ TB), Charlie Blackmon (COL @ LAD), Mookie Betts (BOS vs. LAA), Trayce Thompson (LAD vs. COL), Jarrett Parker (SF @ ARI), and Jake Smolinski (OAK vs. PIT).
