MLB DFS: Targets for 6/17

Matt Harvey

MLB DFS action tonight consists of a packed slate of 14 games. Unfortunately, not included is the Pirates and Cubs matchup.

Pitchers

Matt Harvey (NYM vs. ATL)

Moneyline: -225

Over/Under: 7 1/2

FanDuel: $8,700/DraftKings: $10,300

Harvey’s last three starts are the only starts of the season where he’s allowed one earned run or less, and hasn’t given up a home run during this time too. He has the ability to do this again tonight against the Braves. Even with price considered, Harvey can be rostered on both sites.

Matt Shoemaker (LAA @ OAK)

Moneyline: -144

Over/Under: 7 1/2

FanDuel: $8,300/DraftKings: $8,700

Shoemaker’s huge spike in strikeouts shouldn’t go unnoticed. Since reaching double-digit strikeouts in May, he’s pitched at least seven innings in those starts. Strikeouts are advantageous for this game in Oakland with very little foul territory there to get outs. Overnight, the moneyline increased slightly more in favor of the Angels.

Other pitchers to consider: Lance McCullers (HOU vs. CIN), Aaron Sanchez (TOR @ BAL), and Masahiro Tanaka (NYY @ MIN).

Catchers

Evan Gattis (HOU vs. CIN)

FanDuel: $3,000/DraftKings: $3,500

For his career, Gattis has a strikeout rate of 16.4% against southpaws, and 24.2% against right-handed pitchers. Tonight, he has the platoon against lefty, John Lamb, and should make more contact and show his power. For his career, Gattis has a .489 slugging percentage, .225 ISO, and .332 wOBA, against southpaws.

Yan Gomes (CLE vs. CWS)

FanDuel: $2,400/DraftKings: $2,400

If you’re looking for a punt at the position, Gomes with the platoon is your guy against White Sox pitcher, Jose Quintana. Quintana has only given up five home runs all season, but they are all to right-handed bats. Gomes definitely has the pop in his bat for it and his upside for his price is attractive.

Other catchers to consider: Russell Martin (TOR @ BAL), Welington Castillo (ARI @ PHI), and Victor Martinez (DET @ KC).

First base

David Ortiz (BOS vs. SEA)

FanDuel: $4,300/DraftKings: $5,400

It’s hard not to target Red Sox bats this season, especially when the game has the highest run total of the night at 9 1/2 runs. Ortiz is the Red Sox batter I like best against opposing pitcher, Hisashi Iwakuma. Ortiz for his career against right-handed pitchers has a .610 slugging percentage, .1.017 OPS, .308 ISO, and .422 wOBA.

Chris Davis (BAL vs. TOR)

FanDuel: $3,600/DraftKings: $4,700

The Orioles have seen opposing pitcher, Sanchez, earlier this week and Davis hit a home run in that game. Playing in hitter-friendly Camden Yards, he could surely hit for power tonight. The platoon is what you want with Davis, and for his career against right-handed pitchers he’s hitting with a .528 slugging percentage and .268 ISO.

Other first basemen to consider: Paul Goldschmidt (ARI @ PHI), Jose Abreu (CWS @ CLE), and Freddie Freeman (ATL @ NYM).

Altuve

Second base

Jose Altuve (HOU vs. CIN)

FanDuel: $4,100/DraftKings: $5,600

This game has one of the highest game totals with game and team stacks being popular. The second base position isn’t particularly attractive tonight and could have the highest ownership at the position on FanDuel. Altuve is good against both handedness of pitcher, but he’s great against southpaws. In his career against them, Altuve is has an OPS of .908, .390 BABIP, and .393 wOBA.

Neil Walker (NYM vs. ATL)

FanDuel: $3,300/DraftKings: $4,000

Last night was Walker’s first night back in the lineup after nursing an injury for a few days. He hit a home run last night and looks to be healthy and is a target at the position against the Braves’ pitcher, John Gant. With Gant being a right-hander, Walker will bat from the left side of the plate.

Other second basemen to consider: Rougned Odor (TEX @ STL), Starlin Castro (NYY @ MIN), and Robinson Cano (SEA @ BOS).

Third base

Anthony Rendon (WAS @ SD)

FanDuel: $2,800/DraftKings: $4,500

There’s a large pricing discrepancy for Rendon between the sites with the better value being on FanDuel. The Nationals will be facing Christian Friedrich, who has been decent so far. Against right-handed bats, Friedrich is giving up a slugging percentage of .475, .369 wOBA, and 1.14 HR/9. Nationals’ right-handed bats are what you want in this game.

Other third basemen to consider: Alex Rodriguez (NYY @ MIN), Josh Donaldson (TOR @ BAL), and Nick Castellanos (DET @ KC).

Shortstop

Carlos Correa (HOU vs. CIN)

FanDuel: $3,800/DraftKings: $4,200

Price and recent performance considered, rostering Correa in a stack with other Astrosbats might be a better option than penciling him in as a one-off.

Corey Seager (LAD vs. MIL)

FanDuel: $3,400/DraftKings: $4,000

Seager and the Dodgers are facing Brewer’s starter, Zach Davies. This game doesn’t look like one to stack, so if you’re targeting a Dodgers’ bat, I like Seager for it. Against Davies, you want to roster batters from the left side of the plate with Davies as the road starter, and that’s what we have today with Seager.

Other shortstops to consider: Xander Bogaerts (BOS vs. SEA), and Jonathan Villar (MIL @ LAD).

Outfield

Stephen Piscotty (STL vs. TEX)

FanDuel: $3,600/DraftKings: $3,700

Piscotty hasn’t been as consistent of late, and with price considered on FanDuel, he makes for a better GPP target against southpaw, Cole Hamels. It’s a better pitching environment for Hamels, but Piscotty has the ability to score fantasy points against the league’s better pitchers.

Nelson Cruz (SEA @ BOS)

FanDuel: $4,300/DraftKings: $5,500

Cruz against a lefty, yes please! Besides having great career numbers against southpaws, Cruz also hits well at Fenway Park with career slugging percentage of .692 and OPS of 1.067. The Mariners are facing former teammate, Roenis Elias, and right-handed Mariners bats are a stack to target.

Adam Duvall (CIN @ HOU)

FanDuel: $3,500/DraftKings: $4,500

Duvall has power, no matter where he’s hitting. The Reds are at a hitter-friendly park, at Minute Maid Park for the weekend series against the Astros. Even with McCullers and the Astros as heavy favorites, the Reds should score some runs and Duvall is a target to get those fantasy points. Duvall has reverse splits going on this season with a .617 slugging percentage, .360 ISO, and .902 OPS, against right-handed pitchers.

Other outfielders to consider: Jayson Werth (WAS @ SD), Mookie Betts (BOS vs. SEA), George Springer (HOU vs. CIN), and Franklin Gutierrez (SEA @ BOS).
