MLB DFS: Targets for 5/31

(USATSI)

I hope everyone enjoyed their Memorial Day weekend! There’s a 12-game slate for your MLB DFS targets, and there are three early games that aren’t included: HOU @ ARI, SD @ SEA, and TEX @ CLE.

Pitchers

Jose Fernandez (MIA vs. PIT)

Moneyline: -125

Over/Under: 7

FanDuel: $11,100/DraftKings: $12,400

This game has the lowest run total of the slate and is at pitcher-friendly, Marlins Park. Fernandez is riding a six game winning streak, pitched seven innings in three out of his last four starts, while keeping walks low and touching double-digit in strikeouts. Interesting stat: Andrew McCutchen has a K-percentage of 22.9% this season, with Starling Marte not far behind.

Jake Arrieta (CHC vs. LAD)

Moneyline: -225

Over/Under: N/A

FanDuel: $12,000/DraftKings: $13,000

Arrieta has been really good this season, but his lastest start wasn’t one that we’re used to seeing. His strikeout upside is not as high as we’d like for his price if you’re looking to roster a pitcher that can meet their value. Price considered, Arrieta is probably better suited as a GPP target.

Other pitchers to consider: J.A. Happ (TOR vs. NYY), Aaron Nola (PHI vs. WAS), and Steven Matz (NYM vs. CWS).

Catchers

Tony Wolters (COL vs. CIN)

FanDuel: $2,800/DraftKings: $3,300

If you want exposure to the Coors Field game, you can target the catcher position and Wolters in particular. He has the platoon against Reds’ pitcher, Jon Moscot. The price is a nice because you can save a little here and pay up elsewhere.

James McCann (DET @ LAA)

FanDuel: $2,300/DraftKings: $3,000

McCann can be a punt target for you on FanDuel if he gets the start. The Tigers are facing Angel’s pitcher, Hector Santiago, who has had a rough month. McCann would have the platoon, and you can play him alone or in a stack.

Other catchers to consider: Victor Martinez (DET @ LAA), and Russell Martin (TOR vs. NYY).

First base

Joey Votto (CIN @ COL)

FanDuel: $3,800/DraftKings: $4,300

Votto appears to be the first basemen you want with the upside from Coors Field. His price on both sites makes him easier to roster if you’re paying up for pitching. Opposing pitcher, Jon Gray, has had both good and bad outings on the road and at home, so it’s hard to tell how he’ll do tonight. You’ll want to target left-handed bats at home against Gray, which is what we have here in Votto.

Matt Adams (STL @ MIL)

FanDuel: $3,400/DraftKings: $3,900

If you want to spend less than Votto, Adams facing Wily Peralta is worth a look. Peralta has pitched against the Cardinals earlier this season and didn’t have a good outing. He rarely makes it out of the sixth inning and is prone to giving up home runs. For his career against right-handed pitchers, Adams has a .429 slugging percentage, .194 ISO, and .360 wOBA.

Other first basemen to consider: Edwin Encarnacion (TOR vs. NYY), and Freddie Freeman (ATL vs. SF).

Second base

Ben Zobrist (CHC vs. LAD)

FanDuel: $4,400/DraftKings: $4,800

Zobrist has been on fire and he’s carrying a 17-game hitting streak into this matchup against southpaw, Scott Kazmir. Zobrist is a switch-hitter that you can use from the right side of the plate and feel confident about it, which is something you don’t always see.

Devon Travis (TOR vs. NYY)

FanDuel: $2,200/DraftKings: $3,300

If you’re looking to punt this position, Travis is a solid option. He’s scored fantasy points in all of his games back from the DL, and with the day off yesterday, he should be rested and ready to go today against C.C. Sabathia.

Other second basemen to consider: Neil Walker (NYM vs. CWS), and Scooter Gennett (MIL vs. STL).

Third base

Josh Donaldson (TOR vs. NYY)

FanDuel: $3,900/DraftKings: $4,700

Another target against Sabathia, Donaldson for his price should be strongly considered. He’s been under $4000 on FanDuel and under $5000 on DraftKings, so it’s tough to avoid him while he’s at a more affordable price. For his career against left-handed pitchers, Donaldson has a .596 slugging percentage, .300 OPS, and .416 wOBA.

Nick Castellanos (DET @ LAA)

FanDuel: $3,300/DraftKings: $4,500

Castellanos has been a favorite of mine as an under-the-radar target with nice pop in his bat. He’s a guy to look towards when he has the platoon and is at a nice price today on FanDuel. As mentioned with McCann, the Tigers are facing Santiago, who, against right-handed bats for his career has given up 1.56 HR/9, .429 slugging percentage, and 11.7% HR/FB.

Other third basemen to consider: Nolan Arenado (COL vs. CIN),  and Eugenio Suarez (CIN @ COL).

Shortstop

Manny Machado (BAL vs. BOS)

FanDuel: $4,200/DraftKings: $4,900 (third base eligible)

The Orioles will be facing Eduardo Rodriguez, who is making his first start of the season. I like Machado if you want a pivot off of Trevor Story. They’re the same price on FanDuel and Story is $600 on DraftKings.

Danny Espinosa (WAS @ PHI)

FanDuel: $2,400/DraftKings: $2,300

Espinosa has been scoring fantasy points lately, and he could be a punt play for you tonight. He does hit lower in the order, but you don’t need much production out of Espinosa to pay off his price.

Other shortstops to consider: Aledmys Diaz (STL @ MIL), and Brad Miller (TB @ KC).

Outfield

Carlos Gonzalez (COL vs. CIN)

FanDuel: $3,900/DraftKings: $5,200

Gonzalez is heating up and he could be the highest owned outfielder of the night. His price is nowhere near the top on FanDuel and might be too high on DraftKings. Gonzalez has a seven game hitting streak, and a home run in each of his last three games

Adam Duvall (CIN @ COL)

FanDuel: $3,900/DraftKings: $4,400

Duvall is the same price as Gonzalez and you could play both in the same lineup on either site. Coors Field enhances his serious power and he can continue to build up his home run and RBI totals.

Michael Conforto (NYM vs. CWS)

FanDuel: $3,300/DraftKings: $3,800

Conforto and the Mets are facing Mat Latos tonight, and this is a matchup that I really like. Latos has been coming back to Earth, and left-handed bats is what you want to roster against him. It’s a small sample size for his career, but Conforto against right-handed pitchers has a .571 slugging percentage, .282 ISO, and .394 wOBA.

Other outfielders to consider: Jose Bautista (TOR vs. NYY), Mark Trumbo (BAL vs. BOS) Billy Hamilton (CIN @ COL), Adam Jones (BAL vs. BOS), and Marcell Ozuna (MIA vs. PIT).
