MLB DFS: Targets for 5/24

Red Sox David Price

It’s a fun MLB DFS slate with all of the pitching and hitting to choose from! Don’t forget, the Rays and Marlins play at 12:10 PM EST, and won’t be included in today’s article.

Pitchers

David Price (BOS vs. COL)

Moneyline: -300

Over/Under: 8 1/2

FanDuel: $10,700/DraftKings: $8,900

Price is the heaviest favorite on the slate and overnight, the moneyline rose from -240 to -300 Yet, Justin Verlander and Chris Tillman are priced higher than him on DraftKings where you can have Price as your second pitcher if you choose. The Red Sox bats have been red-hot, so Price should have the run support to get the win, while the Rockies struggle to score runs on the road.

Chris Sale (CWS vs. CLE)

Moneyline: -190

Over/Under: 7

FanDuel: $12,300/DraftKings: $13,800

I have to go back to Sale and he’s the guy that can stop the Indians’ offense. Even though Sale’s strikeout rate has fallen to 24.5% this season, from 32.1% in 2015. The Indians as a team have a strikeout rate of 21.9%, which is 10th highest in the league.

Other pitcher to consider: Stephen Strasburg (WAS vs. NYM), Nate Karns (SEA vs. OAK), and Julio Teheran (ATL vs. MIL).

Catchers

Welington Castillo (ARI @ PIT)

FanDuel: $3,100/DraftKings: $3,300

Castillo is having a great season but his bat has been quiet as of late. The Diamondbacks are facing Francisco Liriano tonight, and he can be inconsistent at times. He struggled in his last outing against the Braves and the Diamondbacks have right-handed batters with power, like Castillo.

Brian McCann (NYY vs. TOR)

FanDuel: $3,200/DraftKings: $3,700

McCann and the Yankees are back to the friendly confines of Yankee Stadium, where they’re going up against R.A. Dickey. Over the last few years, Dickey has given up seven home runs at Yankee Stadium and with a game total of 8 1/2, there are fantasy points to be had here.

Other catchers to consider: Jason Castro (HOU vs. BAL), and Evan Gattis (HOU vs. BAL).

Abreu will be looking to follow up a stunning rookie season in 2015

First base

Jose Abreu (CWS vs. CLE)

FanDuel: $3,700/DraftKings: $3,600

A little different target at the position, many will look to pay up for other first basemen. Abreu and the White Sox are facing Josh Tomlin, who has reverse splits this season. Against right-handed hitters, Tomlin is allowing a .470 slugging percentage, .746 OPS, and five home runs.

Hanley Ramirez (BOS vs. COL)

FanDuel: $3,800/DraftKings: $4,300

The Red Sox offense will be ready to welcome Jorge de la Rosa back from the disabled list. de la Rosa’s splits are worse on the road against right-handed hitters, so Red Sox batters with the platoon will have an advantage.

Other first basemen to consider: Chris Davis (BAL @ HOU), Brandon Belt (SF vs. SD), and Freddie Freeman (ATL vs. MIL).

Second base

Daniel Murphy (WAS vs. NYM)

FanDuel: $3,900/DraftKings: $4,400

Murphy has been hitting great so far this season, and opposing pitcher, Matt Harvey, has been having a rough go of it. His price is much more friendly on FanDuel and hitting cleanup is a much better spot in the order for him to capitalize on RBI opportunities.

Rougned Odor (TEX vs. LAA)

FanDuel: $3,500/DraftKings: $4,100

Considering price and matchup, Odor is the one of the better targets at the position against Jhoulys Chacin. He’ll have the advantage of the platoon and hitting at home at Globe Life Park. For his career against left-handed batters, Chacin is allowing a .419 slugging percentage, .334 wOBA, and .97 HR/9.

Other second basemen to consider: Dustin Pedroia (BOS vs. COL), and Scooter Gennett (MIL @ ATL).

Matt Carpenter is a top-5 third baseman and extra-base machine. (Billy Hurst-USA TODAY Sports)

Third base

Matt Carpenter (STL vs. CHC)

FanDuel: $4,000/DraftKings: $4,600

The Cubs have a three game losing streak, and the Cardinals have a chance to extend that against Jason Hammel. The reasons why I like Carpenter is always the same: bats leadoff, has the platoon, makes great contact, and has enough pop in his bat for a home run.

Yunel Escobar (LAA @ TEX)

FanDuel: $3,400/DraftKings: $3,700

Escobar is quietly having a pretty nice season while hitting in the leadoff spot for the Angels. This game has the highest run total of the slate at 9 1/2 runs. The Rangers are sending Martin Perez to the hill tonight who is a ground ball pitcher. For his career, Escobar is a 56.8% ground ball hitter against southpaws and is able to get on base.

Other third basemen to consider: Todd Frazier (CWS vs. CLE), Jorge Polanco (MIN vs. KC), and Nolan Arenado (COL @ BOS).

Shortstop

Xander Bogaerts (BOS vs. COL)

FanDuel: $4,400/DraftKings: $5,200

It might be hard to put together a Red Sox stack because of their prices, but Bogaerts is a name that might be overlooked. As the most expensive on FanDuel and second most on DraftKings, rostering Bogaerts can help to differentiate your lineup with a hitter that bats on a team who has scored the most runs and RBIs in the league.

Brandon Crawford (SF vs. SD)

FanDuel: $3,100/DraftKings: $3,500

Crawford will be facing Andrew Cashner, who has not pitched particularly well this season. The Giants have faced tough pitchers as of late but this could be the game for them to put several runs on the board. Hopefully, he’ll hit higher in the order for his price, but we’ve seen him pay off his price.

Other shortstops to consider: Manny Machado (BAL @ HOU), and Alcides Escobar (KC @ MIN).

Mike Trout

Outfield

Mike Trout (LAA @ TEX)

FanDuel: $4,900/DraftKings: $5,500

If there is an outfielder to pay up for tonight, I really like Trout. If Escobar and Kole Calhoun can keep getting on base, Trout will have RBI opportunities. Albert Pujols hit a home run last night and the threat of that happening again should help to protect Trout in the lineup.

Nick Markakis (ATL vs. MIL)

FanDuel: $2,900/DraftKings: $3,300

Markakis is a very different pick, but if you want to be contrarian and roster a mid-priced hitter, you could turn to him. The Braves are facing Jimmy Nelson at home, which is a good ball park for pitchers. Markakis isn’t a power hitter so you’re not rostering him for that. Against right-handers, Markakis has a BABIP of .313 and wOBA of .353, while Nelson is give up a BABIP of .305 and wOBA of .353.

Nelson Cruz (SEA vs. OAK)

FanDuel: $4,400/DraftKings: $4,800

Cruz hits right-handed pitchers just fine, and the Mariners are facing A’s righty, Kendall Graveman. Graveman doesn’t pitch much better to right-handed bats versus lefty bats so I can see Cruz having himself a nice fantasy game tonight.

Other outfielders to consider: Ryan Raburn (COL @ BOS), Chris Young (BOS vs. COL), and Bryce Harper (WAS vs. NYM).
