MLB DFS: Targets for 5/18

Pirates Francisco Liriano

It’s a nice size slate of games for tonight’s MLB DFS Targets, which includes main/night slate of games.

Pitchers

Francisco Liriano (PIT vs. ATL)

Moneyline: -210

Over/Under: 7

FanDuel: $9,600/DraftKings: $10,900

Johnny Cueto (SF @ SD)

Moneyline: -135

Over/Under: 6 1/2

FanDuel: $10,900/DraftKings: $11,900

Other pitchers to consider: John Lackey (CHC @ MIL), David Price (BOS @ KC), and Drew Pomeranz (SD vs. SF).

Catchers

Yan Gomes (CLE @ CIN)

FanDuel: $2,700/DraftKings: $3,100

Gomes against a southpaw is always worth a look and tonight the Indians are facing Brandon Finnegan at the Great American. For the season, Gomes has a slugging percentage of .438 and OPS of .702 against lefties, while Finnegan is giving up 2.16 HR/9.

Curt Casali (TB @ TOR)

FanDuel: $2,600/DraftKings: $3,000

He’s not as cheap as we hope for when it comes to punt plays, but Casali is a target tonight for that against R.A. Dickey.  He flashes pop at times and there are run to be scored at Rogers Centre.

Other catchers to consider: Yadier Molina (STL vs. COL), Brian McCann (NYY @ ARI), and Jason Castro (HOU @ CWS).

First base

Mike Napoli (CLE @ CIN)

FanDuel: $3,300/DraftKings: $4,500

Napoli is having a resurgence with the Indians and like Gomes, I like this matchup because of the platoon and ball park. Because of his price on DraftKings, it might be tough to fit him into your roster but could be used in a stack on both sites, with the run total for this game being 8 1/2.

Edwin Encarnacion (TOR vs. TB)

FanDuel: $3,800/DraftKings: $4,400

Encarnacion will be facing Jake Odorizzi, who is not having a good start to the season. This is a good matchup for Encarnacion because Odorizzi has reverse splits in categories that favors right-handed batters, such as, giving up 1.40 HR/K, .430 slugging percentage, and .327 wOBA.

Other first basemen to consider: Joey Votto (CIN vs. CLE), and Justin Smoak (TOR vs. TB).

Second base

Daniel Murphy (WAS @ NYM)

FanDuel: $3,800/DraftKings: $4,600

The Nationals are going up against Bartolo Colon tonight and Murphy is a solid option. Being former teammates, Murphy may have a slight edge but his hitting has been so good this season and even with platoon, that might not even matter.

Starlin Castro (NYY @ ARI)

FanDuel: $2,800/DraftKings: $3,400

In one of the higher run totals of the night at nine, the Yankees will look to take advantage of  Shelby Miller. Whether Castro bats higher in the order or the middle, I think he’s still a really good target for his price.

Other second basemen to consider: Scooter Gennett (MIL vs. CHC), and Robinson Cano (SEA @ BAL).

Andy Cross - The Denver Post

Andy Cross – The Denver Post

Third base

Nolan Arenado (COL @ STL)

FanDuel: $4,400/DraftKings: $4,500

Adam Wainwright is on the hill tonight and sad to say, but his decline doesn’t look temporary. On the other hand, Arenado is who I like best at third and his numbers against righties aren’t too shabby. For the season, he has better a better slugging percentage, OPS, ISO, and wOBA against righties.

Travis Shaw (BOS @ KC)

FanDuel: $3,500/DraftKings: $4,600

The Red Sox are playing a double header today so there’s a chance Shaw may not play, but if he does I like his matchup against Edinson Volquez. As we’ve seen over the past few weeks, the Red Sox have some serious power and Volquez can run into trouble trying to stop them.

Other third basemen to consider: Jung-ho Kang (PIT vs. ATL), and Todd Frazier (CWS vs. HOU).

Shortstop

Francisco Lindor (CLE @ CIN)

FanDuel: $3,500/DraftKings: $4,100

Like mentioned with Gomes and Napoli, Lindor is in a good matchup here too. He’s been a steady producer so you can play him without his teammates or in a stack with them.

Corey Seager (LAD @ LAA)

FanDuel: $4,100/DraftKings: $4,400

Seager has been solid and it’s hard not to at least pencil him into your lineups. He has the platoon against Nick Tropeano and will hit towards the top of the order. His skills and talent haven proven themselves well to start this season, and Seager is proving to be one of the elite options at the position.

Other shortstops to consider: Brad Miller (TB @ TOR), and Didi Gregorius (NYY @ ARI).

Outfield

Matt Holliday (STL vs. COL)

FanDuel: $2,600/DraftKings: $4,000

Cardinals bats will be looked at by many, and you can look to Holliday for salary relief, the platoon, and power potential. He’s been producing enough to where he’s seeing a lot of playing time and batting third.  Holliday and the Cards are facing Chris Rusin, who over his career has a .491 slugging percentage, .372 OBP, .335 BABIP, and .372 wOBA against right-handed bats.

Hunter Pence (SF @ SD)

FanDuel: $3,900/DraftKings: $3,900

With Pence being the same price on both sites, it’s easier to slot him in on FanDuel. It’s a small sample size, but against opposing pitcher, Drew Pomeranz, Pence has three hits, all of which are home runs.

Lorenzo Cain (KC vs. BOS)

FanDuel: $3,400/DraftKings: $3,800

If there is someone that can hit David Price, Cain might be your guy. Like mentioned with Shaw, it’s hard to say who will be in the lineup with this being the second game of the double header, but I think Cain plays. His price isn’t too high and I don’t think he’ll be highly owned either so rostering Cain could be a good way to differentiate your lineup.

Other outfielders to consider: Mike Trout (LAA vs. LAD), Preston Tucker (HOU @ CWS), and Carlos Beltran (NYY @ ARI).
